Olivia Benson said later that she believes that people with mental disorders like schizophrenia should be made to take their medicines. Having witnessed the results of a schizophrenic attack earlier in her career, she felt it was justified to override the patient's right to refuse medication - "To prevent another attack like that? Yes." I agree with her on that much - the safety of the public overrides an individual's right in cases like this.

Sadly, in this episode she convinced the patient to take the medication (not the perpetrator, witness). He was heavily advised by his mother, not to do it, because he had a long, long history of having severe reactions to the medication. Poor guy ended up Killing himself, the medication gave him suicidal ideation. I’m all for the right to refuse medication. Reason being the medication can take a bad situation and make it worse depending on the patient. I am however, 100% in favor of mandatory hospitalization for mentally ill people who have become a threat to themselves or others. What’s would be the difference? (And this is an opinion) Mandatory medication is forcing the patient to take meds regardless of whether or not it is right for the patient individually. Each patient is different with regards to prescription. Mandatory hospitalization, however is putting the patient in a safe environment until the doctors can determine what treatment is going to work best for them. It also puts the doctors rather than the state in charge of stabilizing the patient so that they are no longer a threat.
Great. Let's force medication that may or may not work down people's throats. I'm sure that will not come back to haunt us.

@@ajvanmarle If they're likely to be a danger to themselves or others and should be able to refuse medication, then they at least have to be removed from the general public and somewhere they can get what other care they need and not have the opportunity to harm anyone.
everyone and their moms in this comment section are forgetting season 2 takes place in 2000-2001, as well as the scripts being written in the same year. social norms and society was different in the 2000s. it was wildly more stigmatized and considered a "taboo" to talk about. the stigma from kennedy shutting down a mental health act leaked well beyond the 80s into the 2000s. even today some people don't believe mental health is real. not to mention benson's personal history with abuse. if people actually bothered to watch the series, its shown multiple times benson has trauma from an alcoholic, physically and mentally abusive mother. its reasonable with this knowledge that her opinion would be to forcibly medicate dangerous people for the sake of public safety.

Benson's history with abuse was a real whiplash for me considering the pilot episode showed her having a close and loving relationship with her mother and then every episode after that pretended it never happened.

As person with 2 family members who are Schizophrenic, this was hard to watch. Especially cause I know what it's like when they refuse medication, they can be a danger to themselves and everyone around them. My uncle spent a year in prison cause he choked a lady in front of the courthouse in down Atlanta. The voices in his head made him do it. We were just lucky the cop shot him in the leg.
It sucks that most anti-psychotic medication has horrible side affects. A good chunk of the meds they give you turn you into a zombie

actually shot in the leg is worse then u think, due to how many arteries and veins down there, not to mention not just the bullet has chance to impact and tear but the bone can as well
@@dylanram4653 he lived though, and being in jail for a year helped him out. Being in jail he was forced to take his meds. After 30 days In he started calming down.
@@nicholascharles9625 my two family members with Schizophrenia didn't have this issue. But my nephew who's bi-polar (mental illness runs deep in my family) had that issue with his meds. They started making him depressed, so we had his doctor change them.
The show was always great at casting people in small roles. I felt so bad for that construction guy.

Hey guys I’m an actual schizophrenic, well actually I have schizophrenia and bipolar disorder so it is known as schizoaffective disorder. We are not all scary. Many of us just try to live normal lives. Yes, I do become paranoid. Yes I do hear voices. Yes I have seen things. But I am not a danger to others and I have never physically harmed anyone. Please understand that not all of us are dangerous, many of us just need help and resources that aren’t available to us.
And I would like to add something about the stigma associated with this mental illness. Yes it is true that some schizophrenics have the ability to become violent, but it is really never talked about that schizophrenics are more likely to be harmed than harm anyone else. I’ve been assaulted by a man, and nobody cared because I was mentally ill. It’s really hard dealing with this because everyone’s afraid of you. I’ve lost most of my friends since coming forward about my diagnosis even though I am pretty much the same person I was previously. I’m not really allowed to tell my family because my parents are deeply ashamed of my condition. My father even said that I was a disappointment to him. We are people too. So please be kind

This episode was heartbreaking. He portrayed the torture of schizophrenia brilliantly. So many people live lives just like that. The worst part is that they could live such better lives if the US wasn't so frigging puritanical about research into drugs like psychedelics. The pain that has been caused by America's drug paranoia is unbelievable.

As someone with schizophrenia psychedelics increases the frequency of which I hear voices and see things. It can cause psychosis. Would never ever recommend them

@@SonicGlitchmaster1 You'd think that, it's logical, but oddly, when research was freely allowed on these drugs, it was found that things like depression can be cured with two weeks treatment with low dose psychedelics. We know psychedelics can stimulate nerve growth which means they COULD be a treatment for dementia if people were allowed to do the studies. We know that psychedelics used in the Amazon can help with many forms of mental illness. Given that, how much misery has been caused, how many lives have been lost, because of Puritanism? How many depressed people killed themselves when, with two weeks of treatment, they could have had normal lives? How many people like me are facing a slow, humiliating death from dementia when they could have been treated, if hyper religious people hadn't needed to control society? People who put their personal ideas of righteousness ahead of the good of others and of society as a whole enrage me.
I think the last name of "Nash" was intentional for the character. John Nash was the famous mathematician portrayed in "A Beautiful Mind" who suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. His son also had schizophrenia and was a math genius, although not to the extent his father was.

Shows how much he cared about the girl at the store, not as a lover obviously but as a good friend. Seeing her dead, then seeing the guy in the trash to top it off was already making him sick, given it's his first experience and he's got 2 bodies, but then the blood on his boots. If he kept them it would only be a reminder, so his first thought was "get rid of them". Poor guy.

I dont have schizophrenia but when i dont take my bipolar meds i get really manic and can just snap at anyone, i dont go crazy like this but i can somewhat understand that not taking your meds can cause you to lose it. Stay safe and dont forget your meds❤️✌️
Bless you. My mom is bipolar and every 8 years she decides to stop her meds and then it's 1-2 years of getting her better and back. 3 times I've dealt with it and I'm exhausted.

It's a little scary to think just how close humans are to this level of irrationality. I'm not disparaging those with mental illness, but the thought that one's entire perception of reality can be so drastically different simply because of a slight change in brain chemistry is kind of terrifying.

Having studied Crime and Punishment since first seeing this episode, I have so much more respect for the actor you played Mark Nash, he was just incredible in this episode.
Olivia doesnt know about the effects medication can have on a person. I was on 2 medications from grade school to my sophomore year before a fill in for my physical doctor told me the 2 taken together was making my condition severely worse. When me and my parents confonted my psychologist he acted like it was no big deal. After I changed medication I was completely normal but the damage was done. My entire childhood I was a outcast who was never able to learn socal interactions because parents wouldnt let there kids near me and the kids at school would try to trigger my condition. Now that I'm better I still dont feel comfortable around people and trying to socialize and make friends is extremely difficult all because the medication I was on made my condition worse not better.
Now imagine being forced to take medication that hurt you all because doctors are to lazy or dont care to see if its hurting you or making you better. Just because a medication is working for one patient dosent meen it will work on all patients.
my son who we adopted through foster care experienced sever trauma in when he was 5 years old. he suffered through neglect and his mother was an addict. my kids saw their boyfriend OD. for a while they thought that you could come back to life when you die because he was resuscitated. with therapy and medication my son is now able to be at his best every day. when he is unmedicated we notice a complete difference. he's not doing anything bad however there is a difference. we are hoping that he can eventually come off. but now as a father of an 11 year old boy who watches him have bad. im glad he is able to be the best version of himself when he has his medicine. it is unfortunate that this has been your experience and I am sorry that things transpired for you this way.

Most Schizophrenics are not and never will become violent.
Medicine doesn’t always help, sometimes (like the guy in this episode) taking just makes it worse.

I just wanna say its very hard to take those things every day medicine no matter what condition you have and honestly it makes you just sad and depressed constantly but i agree with benson if your hurting yourself or others that's when it becomes not okay i just think they could have gone a diff way because he did unalive himself :c
Almost 40 years of daily meds multiple times a day, no it is not hard to do nor is it depressing or sad. It makes me able to function like a relatively health individual. Not taking them is sad and depressing when you can't be well enough to leave the house or maintain enough intake to not slowly expire due to lack of nutrition and dehydration.

I have to take meds in a shot while it makes me better i cant help but to be sad just because im so tired but your right at least i can leave the house being healthy

As someone who has been on many different medications for several things, I know this first hand. Too many people just take medications without telling their doctor the side effects are lasting longer than they should.

Schizophrenia is like a toxic cloud, affecting everyone and everything around the patient. Too bad they can't make a medicated implant to ensure treatment.
This was another hard episode.
Back when I was almost a teenager,va boy who was a couple years older than me became a schizophrenic. This of us in the neighborhood got a kick out of the crazy things he was saying. Talking to imaginary people. That and mistaking total strangers for someone he knew.
None of us understood that he was completely nuts. Maybe we thought he was just trying to make us all laugh. Later he got really wierd and shaved his head. No one did that back in the Sixties. He also started smoking cigars.
Then one weekend I was watching the local news on television and saw a house that was in our neighborhood. The news programs were covering a quadruple murder scene.
The crazed kid had killed his mother, little brother and two sisters. One of whom was my classmate.
Due to his age, not a lot of information exists about what happened to him after. All I know is that the wacko nutjob in this video is just like him...
Either he was born that way or it was caused by brain injury or drugs/alcohol.

It was bc he didn’t feel comfortable with the fact her undies were off so he went to dress her after he called the cops. So he was on the ground while doing to getting blood on the top of his shoes.

I hate that I actually knew the fucking second the dude started quoting Dostoyevsky, because I hated reading Crime and Punishment for AP English. We had to do it over the summer before school started, and then write a fifty page paper about our comprehension of a 500 page book that’s really fucking dense and dark. And I have ADHD. That task was fucking hard for me. A huge book and a huge paper. And I only got a B+ on that paper and I gave it my fucking ALL and English was like my strongest subject by far, so I really needed a strong grade on such a big assignment to balance out how much I sucked at math.

People who have mental illness are just people who need help. We can't help what we have but we want to treated like human beings. Maybe these cops are trying to help him instead of just arresting him. You don't know a person's heart or story. We have our faults but we are not criminals. I have been diagnosed with bipolar2 and clinical depression since I was a late teen. I had problems but I can also be a friendly person. I just needed to be helped and loved. Now I'm an adult and happily married. I take meds that tastes awful but have helped me a lot. I still have my faith also as well as family support.

Today I got a call from the police, asking for money. I simply said no. Why you may ask. Well this is not a political post. But I have noticed. In 20 something years of practicing I have dealt with individuals who suffer from PTSD simply because the grew up fearing the police. Yet shows like this seek to make the police seem sympathetic. Sad really

I have a mental handicap and there's no medication for it. A ton of people with a mental disability are more likely to be abused then actually abuse.
As someone with mental health issues, you’re wrong. In my case meds made it worse and made me angry. If they’re violent they should be placed somewhere. You’re just making it seem like we’re all bad. The “time bomb” situation- almost always the only people we hurt is ourselves.

Thank you E for informing us and thank you Linda for apologizing! It's true that a lot of mental patients actually are more likely to hurt themselves, not others. Even if they do hurt others (this can obviously happen) it's usually because all the red flags werd there and they did not receive proper care. Medication is not always the answer. But those people absolutely need way better help.
