I used to catch them in creeks in No. VA back in the 60's. They had a bright red stripe, much redder than these.

Thanks for these videos! I am planning on setting up some native fish tanks for me and my homeschooled kiddos. Thank you for the care information, it's hard to find info on keeping native fish.

Rightfully so, they are such hardy and energetic fish. They also contain an awesome yellow stripe, such an underrated fish!

I enjoyed your video on the native fish! They do have some colors and you keep them healthier than I see them at the fish stores!

Thanks! I try to keep them as healthy as possible, varied feedings and clean water is key.

I think I have some juvenile ones. I'm not sure because they're pretty tiny and the smallest one I have is still kind of transparent. They have a nice copper color if viewed from the top.

Great info! Thank you! Let me know if you're planning to collect anymore fish. I'd love to join. (I'm am also a Gpasi member. Gene

Thanks for watching! Nice to see another gpasi member in TH-cam. I usually limit collecting in my secret hole where these fish are to twice a year to preserve the population as it is a small feeder creek but I'll occasionally pick up a few in the Allegheny River as well which I try to organize a club collecting trip for at least once a year. Keep an eye out for emails from the club around April-June!

What's the smaller fish that's swimming in with the Redsides? The one with the dark stripe on its side.

Friendly FYI, the Redside Dace is listed as an endangered species. Under no circumstance should you ever remove it from its habitat.

Hi Rebecca, I'm from PA (in the US), and here it's perfectly legal to own and harvest redside dace, they're listed as a responsibility species in PA which loosely means we need to monitor them since much of their overall range occurs in our state, but they're also listed a species of least concern, and here you're allowed to harvest up to 50 per day from stable populations, not that you ever should take that many!

Great but for anyone who lives Ontario let's make sure we keep them where they are. Thanks

      Excellent.
So my comment is just a reminder to those folks in Ontario. It's easy to think forget the huge benefit to the larger ecosystem that this little fish provides.

@@rebeccaharrison5739 Environmental Law student here. He has mentioned he has been collecting these and wants to collect more. Probably still does. He could have some legal issues regarding this. This is listed as a endangered species in Ontario, and there are recovery strategies in place because so little are left. Perhaps he would like to have a little chat with the authorities. He is uneducated, greedy, and ignorant about this minnow.
