    One of my favorite memories of this is when Ghostbusters came out in 2009. A lot of people were complaining about this one enemy being really tough. I was surprised, because I found it pretty easy. Turned out that pirated copies made the enemy invincible.

      These anti piracy measures punished legit owners tho, this is why they're not used much.
      Many people immediately mod their games one way or another, again punishing legit owners.
      DRM solves nothing and is just a petty medal devs brand just to fuck with consumers.

    This Mortal Kombat dev menu thing finally explains something for me! I knew something was up. At my local mall, there used to be an arcade (closed finally in 2007 or so). In the mid-90s when I was a kid, one of the Mortal Kombat cabinets would sometimes be left on free play mode, and kids would crowd around to play it. Eventually the cabinet was set to Out Of Order, but for almost a year that thing would be randomly on free play. I once met a guy who claimed he was the one doing it, and he said there was a secret button combination that triggered it, but I didn't believe him because he refused to tell me what. Greg, wherever you are, looks like I was wrong.

    Don't forget the Game Dev Tycoon Anti-Piracy technique. Though y'all might've already heard of it.
    The developers of Game Dev Tycoon leaked an unwinnable version of their game onto some piracy sites, and at some point in that version of the game, the games your company makes will stop making decent sales numbers, due to piracy, dooming your company to bankruptcy.

    Not gonna lie, I agree with CDPR's stance. If I ever produced a game I'd have pirated copies just put extra dialogue in after various parts which equate to "But you know, you really should purchase the game." or "Seems you're enjoying yourself, why not consider buying a real copy?" Something like that, to annoyingly needle them with "I deserve to be paid, jerk".

  • @SirLightsOut99

    Two anti-piracy features that I found especially funny can be found in Skullgirls and Enter the Gungeon. Upon pirating skullgirls, the game will let you play through any given characters arcade or story mode, but when you beat the final boss you're greeted with a message that says "what is the square root of a fish? Now I'm sad." When the pirates inevitably started outing themselves on Twitter by asking what this message meant, all the developers would reply is that it meant that they should buy an actual copy of the game.
    Enter the gungeon doesn't have any anti-piracy measures itself, but there was a fairly popular mod that targeted pirates specifically. Once installed, if the mod detected that you were running a pirated copy of the game, it would open two windows on your computer. One was a link to the Lazy Town song You Are A Pirate, while the other was a link to an official copy of the game on the steam store.

      That's the only thing it does, it doesn't prevent you from playing the game or screwing you over by instantly KOing your fighter like how The Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth kills your heroes if you pirated the game in a certain amount of time for no apparent fucking reason.
      It gives you a message that is super vague.
      Hell, someone on Twitter by the name of Dan Hibiki asked the official Skullgirls twitter account about the message, and I quote "So I got this message after beating story with both Para and Cere and I have no idea what it means...", and they said to the user "Oh that? It means you should probably buy the game instead of pirate it. O:)".

    Developers always have a bug up their ass about piracy when it's been shown time and time again that piracy has a zero to positive effect on the industry. The people who pirate and never buy the product afterwards were never going to buy it in the first place. These people are not "lost sales" and I'm tired of corporate looking at them that way in order to justify invasive, damaging, or downright buggy "anti-piracy" measures.

    • @DeathBringer769
      @DeathBringer769 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it's not cheap for the dev/publisher to buy stuff like Denuvo either. They are literally paying expensive prices to potentially *lose* sales in the long term over people being pissed at buggy/performance-hogging DRM measures slapped on the game. But Denuvo keeps putting the advertising propaganda of "it'll help you get more day 1 sales at full price!" in their head and tries to convince them it's worth it. All Denuvo cares about is their own pocketbook though, not any interest in honestly looking at the long term statistics for the history of gaming and telling the truth that, like you said, it's been shown time and time again it has a zero (or even positive) effect on the industry. Some of the highest selling games of all time were also the most pirated.

  • @mstrainjr
    @mstrainjr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    It's funny how anti-piracy measures tend to inconvenience those who legitimately buy the games, yet pirates are smart enough to crack the games anyway. And as the narrator pointed out here, sometimes the cracked game outperforms the legitimate copy. So then I guess you could say that the anti-piracy measures, as well as the high price tag, can actually push people toward downloading the pirated versions.

    "Denuvo" is just the gamer word for "suicide". As in suicide to a company's reputation and income. It's insane that it's still being used to this day despite being PROVEN to cause a loss in sales YEARS ago. How many more times does it need to be proven as harmful? If once wasn't enough, then neither will 100 times... Games companies dont learn, or adapt, they just rot too slowly to care that they're dying.
    Piracy will continue to be the morally better choice whilst the current alternative is buying the worst version of a game.

      Studies in human behaviour suggest otherwise, giving the public opportunity to have free easy access to goods and services without any negative consequence most of the times result in the people taking largely advantage of that, if a store put all their items for free with the option to pay for the items if you want to support the store most if not all people would take the items for free.
      Anti piracy measures serve the purpose to hinder the actions of who whish to use the goods for free, making most of who would have, given easy access to the free copy without consequences, chose that option to instead purchase the game or not bother at all. I assure you that if pirate copie of games were as easy to retrieve and play as regular copie most people who buy games would resort to piracy.
      Beside that companies are required to protect their copyrights, failing to do that could result in the loos of their rights on said intellectual property, making it public domain.

    The days when we had to use copy protection documents to play adventure games in the 80s and 90s and serial keys.
    some copy protection documents were fun like monkey island's but if you lost any of these codes or documents..... That's it. Sorry buddy, no more game for you unless you can crack it.

    When developers try weird stuff like this to get pirates to buy the game, it usually just makes me think the game is broken or just won't work on my computer and I delete it and forget about it. If it doesn't work on the pirated version I'm definitely not going to pay money just in case it still doesn't work

    I thought PC games were easy to pirate, because you just need to either borrow from a friend or rent the game on CD-ROM, install it, return the disc, and download a crack that lets you bypass the CD check, *not* needing to bypass a check for a legitimate copy.
    For the registered versions of DOS games, it was even easier (unless it was a rare user of old physical DRM techniques, although cracks and other bypasses exist for those, too), since you just needed to pass along a copy of the game on floppy disk or re-writable CD (or just download them from the "right" web sites once the Internet became popular).
    Or for you modern PC gamers, simply have a friend log into his/her Steam or GOG account on your computer so you can install all their games for yourself (and use the offline method for playing Steam games).

    the mk menu was well known by anyone who operated an arcade, it was the options menu for the game and it assisted with bookkeeping functions as well.
