i was thinking that the apple represented “bad apples don’t fall far from the tree” since the message at the end reads “raise boys responsibly” but that makes a lot of sense

I like how the judge who sentences Johnny is black and white, unlike the rest of the characters who are all mostly colorful, the judge is the only one who isn’t fooled by Johnny
The clocks are also all black and white !! It shows that no matter what people say to defend him, his time will have to come eventually, and when the judge breaks the clock, it shows he’s finally run out of time
I tried to fit him somewhere in the background as much as I could, even the clock is black and white to represent death and how johnnys time is limited, I like the idea death knew he was bad ever since he was a child and waited his whole life for an opportunity to take him away!

I love the detail that during the court section that starts around 3:20 his parents are obviously there for his court appearance as a child and teenager but didn't even show up for the trial that sentenced him to death. I was also wondering if during the flash that's an olive branch in his attorneys mouth- they turn white like a dove so if it is I imagine its to signify the attorney having already made peace with the inevitable outcome or something else?

Yes his parents gave up on him after he hit adult hood and still didn’t change and it’s implied (by me lol) the lawyer was in cahoots with the judge to sentence Johnny, johnnys death leads to peace, the lawyer caused the death, the lawyer is peace, he is actually a crow a symbol of death but in that split second he’s a dove
God! I'm in love with the designs of each and every character. It really shows that Johnny's monstrosity isnt that special in this society. Thats a perfect visualization for this song! Oingo Boingo has a special place in my heart; one of my favorite CDs is a copy of Best of Boingo my dad bought for himself many many years ago. He liked analyzing the lyrics of and politics reflected in Only A Lad. Seeing other people putting their hearts into creating their own interpretations with the same songs is always the best :)
I’m so glad someone noticed how just about everyone in this video has something weird to them as well, I wanted to show that you can be weird or flawed or both but even in this world folks like Johnny stick out that’s how bad he is, not to mention I wanted to show incompetence of judges or family or whatever who just let bad folks get away with stuff, I’m also a huge oingo boingo fan and I’m super flattered you like my animation, all the best 🤟⭐️
As a massive fan of Oingo Boingo, this had me amazed from start to finish! The superb designs, the incredible colours, and the way the camera snaked and moved with the framing! It all came together to be one of the best thing's I've seen in months! The use of black-and-white in this short is stunning. Its use as a symbol of Death gets explored in a lot of cool ways, including: - Actual death, as seen with the last frame of the man Johnny runs over - Near-death; the woman Johnny shoots and the person he hits with a dart before the second verse go ghostly-white with black outlines, showing their proximity to Death in that moment - Time, with multiple black-and-white clocks being shown as if to communicate how Johnny is running out of / wasting time before his demise - A point of no return, with Johnny’s letter from his parents and, subsequently, himself This animation is eye-catching, fluid, and just the coolest stuff I’ve ever seen. I love to use black and white for symbolism in all my work I’m stunned at the work you’ve put in here figuring all it out, another fun fact you might like is I very very rarely use red in my work but Johnny and apples are red in this, both representing sin, corruption and childishness, he also pops up as purple during one frame colour I also very rarely use to show just how weird Johnny is to that world, I’m so glad you like my animation I hope you have a lovely day ❤

The actual animation itself perfectly matches the music’s pacing. It’s the best use of secondary colors I’ve seen in a while. And I love how there’s not a single character here without at least a little ounce of personality. Well done!

I said on your other platform, but the amount of details you put in this is incredible!! Be it silly or serious, rewatching on a slower speed helps me really acknowledge all the details and effort. I love the way the grim reaper keeps showing up, first in the class poster, as the kitchen clock (super clever btw), his first trial, and through other flyers and figures as his life goes on, and finally at his last trial. Even the black and white clock, and how with the last judge it was on the floor cracked, his time is up. Really dancing with death the whole way. Super well done!!!

Oh and the kid in the background is presumably the child of the old lady with the radio OH AND THE TEACH- Hot damn, you put SO much thought into this animation. and yes, as soon as I noticed this animation, I started sending it to all the people I communicate with. It's great, and I'll be showing it to my potential children many years from now
i love this animation to bits!!! i love the colors and the character designs...OUGH!! so peak after watching this on loop for the past few days, this is my interpretation of what's happening in this animation: johnny seems to be some sort of psychopath who started causing trouble at an early age- it started off as him just being a prankster who often disrupted class, but over time it eventually spiraled into hurting small animals, causing property damage and hurting his classmates (pulling the blue girl's hair at 1:05), which led to him being expelled from school (and possibly being homeschooled, though there's not anything to support that claim). sometime after being expelled, johnny committed his first real crime- breaking into an old woman's house, stealing her radio, and shooting her in the leg. even though the incident seems to have physically impaired the woman (the crutches next to her at 1:29) she makes it seem like not that big of a deal, leading to johnny getting off easy/not being punished that severely/at all for what he did. johnny continues this criminal streak well into his teen/adult years. his parents try everything they can to get their son to change his bad behavior (most likely asking the priest/angel from 0:38 and 3:07 to try and scare him straight by telling him that he'd go to hell if he kept misbehaving), but after he became an adult they accepted that nothing that they were doing was working and ended up kicking him out/disowning him. over time, johnny ends up committing bigger and bigger crimes, not thinking of the consequences because he's already gotten away with so much already. things take quite a turn, however, when he kills a man after running him over with a car he stole and ends up acquitted due to the jury not really knowing what they were doing. the fact that he was able to get away with murder like he did gets to johnny's head, and decides to kill once again, via instigating a shooting in a local movie theater (3:15 - 3:20). however, johnny isn't so lucky this time, as the judge finds him guilty. johnny is sentenced to death via the electric chair, the family of all the victims he's harmed over the years watching as the executioner (who looks a lot like the girl from 1:05, though that could be a coincidence) pulls the lever, and johnny meets his end.
This is amazing there’s some things here I didn’t even think of! You’ve got it down to a T, I imagine he was homeschooled at some point and he actually does end up killing more people in my mind off screen, before the murder he was just a bother, harassing women, doing drugs, causing chaos but after the murder of the man via the car it gets to his head and you can see he shows up to court multiple times after, the movie theatre thing is actually just a weird dream sequence which fun fact was inspired by the theatre scene in outlast 1! Also yes that is the girl who got her hair pulled and relatives of victims behind her and I don’t believe Johnny is psychotic, he’s fully aware and id decided before animating he wouldn’t be mentally ill in anyway to really get across that he is just a bad person through and through, no one really tried to fix him not even his parents besides the angel at the church but even he doesn’t really stand up to him, overall fantastic analysis I’m so happy to see folks dissecting my animation to this extent

Oingo Boingo has a special place in my heart; one of my favorite CDs is a copy of Best of Boingo my dad bought for himself many many years ago. He liked analyzing the lyrics of and politics reflected in Only A Lad. Seeing other people putting their hearts into creating their own interpretations with the same songs is always the best :)

As a massive fan of Oingo Boingo, this had me amazed from start to finish! The superb designs, the incredible colours, and the way the camera snaked and moved with the framing! It all came together to be one of the best thing's I've seen in months! Keep up the incredibly good work, and have a lovely day, this is something I'm sure to return to time and time again for ages to come!
The use of black-and-white in this short is stunning.
Its use as a symbol of Death gets explored in a lot of cool ways, including:
- Actual death, as seen with the last frame of the man Johnny runs over
- Near-death; the woman Johnny shoots and the person he hits with a dart before the second verse go ghostly-white with black outlines, showing their proximity to Death in that moment
- Time, with multiple black-and-white clocks being shown as if to communicate how Johnny is running out of / wasting time before his demise
- A point of no return, with Johnny’s letter from his parents and, subsequently, himself

I love to use black and white for symbolism in all my work I’m stunned at the work you’ve put in here figuring all it out, another fun fact you might like is I very very rarely use red in my work but Johnny and apples are red in this, both representing sin, corruption and childishness, he also pops up as purple during one frame colour I also very rarely use to show just how weird Johnny is to that world, I’m so glad you like my animation I hope you have a lovely day ❤

I said on your other platform, but the amount of details you put in this is incredible!! Be it silly or serious, rewatching on a slower speed helps me really acknowledge all the details and effort. I love the way the grim reaper keeps showing up, first in the class poster, as the kitchen clock (super clever btw), his first trial, and through other flyers and figures as his life goes on, and finally at his last trial. Even the black and white clock, and how with the last judge it was on the floor cracked, his time is up. Really dancing with death the whole way. Super well done!!!

after watching this on loop for the past few days, this is my interpretation of what's happening in this animation:
johnny seems to be some sort of psychopath who started causing trouble at an early age- it started off as him just being a prankster who often disrupted class, but over time it eventually spiraled into hurting small animals, causing property damage and hurting his classmates (pulling the blue girl's hair at 1:05), which led to him being expelled from school (and possibly being homeschooled, though there's not anything to support that claim).
sometime after being expelled, johnny committed his first real crime- breaking into an old woman's house, stealing her radio, and shooting her in the leg. even though the incident seems to have physically impaired the woman (the crutches next to her at 1:29) she makes it seem like not that big of a deal, leading to johnny getting off easy/not being punished that severely/at all for what he did.
johnny continues this criminal streak well into his teen/adult years. his parents try everything they can to get their son to change his bad behavior (most likely asking the priest/angel from 0:38 and 3:07 to try and scare him straight by telling him that he'd go to hell if he kept misbehaving), but after he became an adult they accepted that nothing that they were doing was working and ended up kicking him out/disowning him.
over time, johnny ends up committing bigger and bigger crimes, not thinking of the consequences because he's already gotten away with so much already. things take quite a turn, however, when he kills a man after running him over with a car he stole and ends up acquitted due to the jury not really knowing what they were doing. the fact that he was able to get away with murder like he did gets to johnny's head, and decides to kill once again, via instigating a shooting in a local movie theater (3:15 - 3:20).
however, johnny isn't so lucky this time, as the judge finds him guilty. johnny is sentenced to death via the electric chair, the family of all the victims he's harmed over the years watching as the executioner (who looks a lot like the girl from 1:05, though that could be a coincidence) pulls the lever, and johnny meets his end.
This is amazing there’s some things here I didn’t even think of! You’ve got it down to a T, I imagine he was homeschooled at some point and he actually does end up killing more people in my mind off screen, before the murder he was just a bother, harassing women, doing drugs, causing chaos but after the murder of the man via the car it gets to his head and you can see he shows up to court multiple times after, the movie theatre thing is actually just a weird dream sequence which fun fact was inspired by the theatre scene in outlast 1! Also yes that is the girl who got her hair pulled and relatives of victims behind her and I don’t believe Johnny is psychotic, he’s fully aware and id decided before animating he wouldn’t be mentally ill in anyway to really get across that he is just a bad person through and through, no one really tried to fix him not even his parents besides the angel at the church but even he doesn’t really stand up to him, overall fantastic analysis I’m so happy to see folks dissecting my animation to this extent
