    I use to work not too far away from The Mark Addy and spent many a lunch time in there. Such a shame it closed down, but I guess it was inevitable being right beside The Irwell where flooding can happen. Thank you for bringing a few memories back.

    Oh wow, sad to see this old gem in this state. Spent many a lunchtime in this place, famed for it's cheese and pate platters. It was a proper city slickers place back in the 90's. It was great in the summer on the outdoor bit if not a bit smelly at times due to the Irwell pong.

    A really popular pub once upon a time. Well known for ite ploughman lunches, a must place to visit if shopping in Manchester. Bit by bit it went into decline as it standards dropped, and it got swallowed up the growth around it.. Thanks for the video.

    I remember the Mark Addy well, me and my Mrs used to go in there. I wouldn't have called it a restaurant, but they did serve food there ( at one time they even had a cheese counter at the back wall ). You went in at street level and walked down the stairs to the bar/dining area at the bottom. There were doors at the bottom of the stairs leading to the outdoor terrace, and side doors from the bar where you broke in..(Sorry I ,meant sneaked in ). Pleasure boats on the Irwell stopped at the pub and dropped off/picked up punters as part of the trip. The ladies toilets were at the top of the steps as you walked in. You had to collect a key for the toilets from the bar to stop anybody just wandering in off the street to use them.

    This was opened in about 1980, by Salford Bookmaker, Jim Ramsbottom, who lived ( don’t know if he is still alive!) on Lancaster Road. I covered the opening of this bar and restaurant on opening day, for the Salford City Reporter, as I was the staff photographer! Jim was a millionaire who had the pub built from scratch, after dealing with the ingress of water from the side of the river.

    Sad to see it in that state. I spent many a Sunday in there in the ‘80s, on a diet of beer and their famous great hunks of bread, cheese and pâté. Managed to visit again shortly before it flooded, when it had turned into an upmarket gastropub with some really interesting local produce on the menu. I believe they’d renovated it once after the first flood, but couldn’t get insurance any more, so couldn’t afford to patch it up again when it flooded a second time.

Where that pulley thing was on the old building is part of The People’s History Museum, that artwork of Mark Addy should be taken down and put in that museum as it’s only painted on wood if I remember rightly. You did get a lot of homeless staying down there as it’s so overgrown that no one can see them but there’s so much security with all these posh “Apartments” ( flats ) but if you go through Spinningfields there’s a lot seemed to have closed since COVID19.

    Way back in 1997 I used to have the occasional lunchtime booze in that gaffe when I worked down Portland Street. Back then it used to stink of damp and touching the brick walls in areas was grim. Used to do a cracking stinky cheese board though 😅 would be great to see it reopen again as long as it's not a leftist puff house 🤐

    Great video! Out of interest have you ever been caught by security? Is there anything they can do?

    • @TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt
      @TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Twice in over a hundred n thirty videos and no there's nothing they can do' they can't even touch you' not that I'm arrogant about it I just use my loaf and don't get caught. The two times I was caught we knew it would happen but took the risk to see the places.
      Its classed as civil trespass so if the owner pressed charges then who knows what would happen. It's pretty much getting to the point now that I don't even have to worry as people seem to trust us.
      Anyway, thanks for the feedback and great question take care pal.
