Hey Vic - this video was really helpful. You’re great at explaining things! I have a big question about this camera (we’ll, it’s big and important for me 🤷🏻♀️) - sometimes, but not always I have a little icon in the top left corner of a imported clip (into iMovie) that looks like a sun in a grey square. When it’s recorded in this setting, I can’t seem to speed up a clip without it being horribly choppy and fragmented looking. I’m not sure what this is, how I’m doing it, or how to change it AND I’ve watched so many Sony zv1 tutorials to try and see someone talk about this, but all to no avail! Do you have any idea about this and can help me out? Thank you! (It seems to import the clip in turtle mode and has a fancy feature of speeding up and slowing down a clip all on its own, and trying to change it out of that setting is near impossible for me). So confused. Is it a shutter priority thing? 🤔😩
@@VicBarry no. In 1080p and it was in 120p 60M (whatever that means! Haha). I had it on shutter priority and 1/50. I was having problems before where I would want to custom speed up a clip depending on what I was doing, and the clip was super choppy. So I asked someone about it, and he said to do the 1/50 setting with shutter priority. I’m mostly filming me doing a project, not vlogging stuff so much, so I wanted it to be flexible and didn’t think I needed 4K. Maybe I should just reset the whole camera back to the original settings? But it’s strange. I’ve tried changing the settings to auto program, from the 120p 100M to 60p 50M, and it still has that setting on there. I have NO idea how it got there. It brings the clip down into the turtle mode with little movie clip icons in the middle of the clip. Do you even know what I’m talking about? Ever seen it before? It’s like a little feature setting and of left as is, it’s a slow motion clip but the last section it ramps back up to normal speed. Thank you for getting back to me!
This was great. Thank you. Do you have any idea why under my 4K record settings I only have two possibilities 25p 100M and 25p 60M ? Yiou have 4 options shown in the video.
Thank you for the video. It made it easy for me to understand the camera setting, and learn more about my camera. Much appreciation ! P.s of you read this comment, can you help me with turning on the stead shooting, it’s dimmed 😌
Great Video Vic. I have just taken delivery of the ZV-1. I have purchased a SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro. On Choosing the XAVC S 4K file format it only gives mean the Record Settings two options 25p 100M and 25p 60M. Can you suggest which I should use?
Hey there, if you switch from PAL to NTSC you’ll get the other options. Just keep in mind that you’ll have tonformate the card when you switch from one region to the other
Hi Vic, I know this is an old video but a great tutorial. I purchased the ZV1 about 4 months ago. I’d a problem with the battery this week & now the shutter keeps opening & closing when I turn the camera on. Any idea why this is happening & how I might fix it? Thanks, Maeve
The battery exhausted. I managed to charge it back but it died again after a 30 minute video & I had it plugged in to charge while filming. It seemed to not take the charge again & then the shutter problem started. I purchased a new battery & tried that today but the problem is still there. Really appreciate you replying. Thanks. I’ll contact Sony.
Hey there 👋 for the ZV1 keep the aperture at 1.8 and the shutter speed at 1/50 and mess around with the ISO to get the best image. High iso will bring more noise to the image but see what looks good for you 👍
@vic barry, please take us through the sony modes including manual exposure, program auto exposure in video mode. Love your video's. Its become my go to for the ZV-1
Hi Vic, I need your help, my record settings are way to different from yours, is that even possible, what should I do to get the same settings, I don't have 120fps I'm really worried. Please help me
@@VicBarry Unfortunately it uses it at its 10%, only automatically because I am not an expert in photogracy and although many things are trivial I do not know them;)
Hi Vic, love your vids. I used all the settings in this video. I seems like when my sony-zv1 have been on (not even recording - but also while recording) it starts lagging. It then helps when I turn it off. Do you have any idea how I can fix this? Thanks a lot :)
@@VicBarry Thanks for your reply. No it's both when I'm recording that it's very stuttery and also when I view the file after recording. Then it of course recorded the sound nice and 'on time' but the screen is clearly very very stuttery..
On the ZV-1, HLG2 is decent enough if you're doing some color grading, but to be honest, unless you're planning on doing that, then no picture profile looks pretty great!
Hello, I am a newbie to this video world....do you think this is the best camera for someone like me or should I look into another type of camera???? Please HELP...🙏🙏 Thank You!!
Dear Vic Barry, how do I change autofocus/re-autofocus while I’m shooting video on the Sony ZV-1? Also, what programs do you use for post-processing video? Could you do a hands-on video on that?
Hi Vic Really top video. I have a zv-1 and don't get the option to film in 30fps...it just doesn't appear. I read something about pal and NTSC but not entirely sure. Also, i'm sure when i got the camera i was able to set it to 30fps. Just wondered if you have any ideas as in your video, you clearly have that option.
Do you have videos where you explain in detail and for beginners what frames per second, resolution, shutter speed and all those variables mean? I may get the Sony ZV-1 but all these topics are new to me and a bit overwhelming trying to learn how to use the camera plus understanding the definitions at the same time. Thanks in advance.
Vic Barry Yes can I see some sample photos? I don’t want to carry my a7iii with me all the time and I'd like to see if this camera can double as an every day cam for food, flowers, street photography and casual portraits.
Do you recommend buying this for concert? It last hour and I am just going to put on tripod. My concern is between the file they might have video looses which camcorder can handle this issue. Thanks
Hello Vic. When you put these settings into the camera which mode on the camera should you use. Intelligent auto or Movie. Find this hard. Thanks Steve
Thank you Vic. I'm watching your video again. I'm crap at these things. Hopping to learn as I go along. Sometimes I wish I had of bought another Gopro. Lol 👍
Thank you for this! I'm finally going from video on my phone to a camera haha! What tripod do you use that can do overhead shots as well as straight on?
Great Video! Thank you learned a ton. I am trying to figure out on Audio Recording Level, why I can't see levels.I push it and it says Shoot mode or Program Auto and mine is on Program and cant change it. Thoughts
Hey Tanya, you have to enable audio levels in the menus and then you have to press the display button once you're in a camera mode to show the levels. Each time you press the display button, it cycles through different elements on the screen, the audio levels won't appear on every one, so if you don't see them first, press it again. Does that make sense?
@@VicBarry I am on Movie 3 in menus. Then I toggle down to Audio Rec Levels and its grey and a dash. That is where it says Program Mode. And Audio Recording is ON.
Hey Tanya, you need to be in movie mode for audio levels to be available in the menus. That's why you're seeing the dash. So, press mode until you're in movie mode. Then hit menu and go to the audio levels.
Hi Barry love your channel, I have recently purchased a ZV1 and when I go in to 4K I only have 2 options 25P 100M and 25P 60M its not the same as your menu
Howya Vic, thanks for the tips. I am looking to record my band's 2hr+ live shows. Hit Record and forget, but worried it might #overheat, any experience of 2hr+ continuous recording ? 👍🏻
@@VicBarry thanks Vic. Yep, I'd pair it with a cage and stick a external battery on it. Does the screen have an off timer, as once the position is set I wouldn't need to see the screen so that might reduce the long term heat (for a constant 2hrs say) ?
Vic, my ZV-1 keeps has gone into "Standby mode" after I was able to successfully do live-streaming at one point. Can you make a suggestion? I suspect I'm missing something really basic! I have the Auto Temp Off set to High. and the battery is fully charged and charging with the USB cable I have.
Vic Barry and all here- hello! Thank you for the very helpful videos! SONY ZV-1 is my first camera ever and I'm learning to use it now. I want to use it for NightShot with IR light as well and I also bought SONY HVL-LEIR1 with IR light for it. On the Sony website it was stated that HVL-LEIR1 is fully compatible with ZV-1 so I assumed that I can nightshot using ZV-1 and HVL-LEIR1 together. But ZV-1 doesn't see the IR and I can't fing NightShort function on ZV-1. Is it possible to nightshor with ZV-1 and - if yes - Which settings should I use for photos and videos? And what flash light is fully compatible with ZV-1? Many thanks in advance.
Is there any reason to use 'movie' mode over normal picture mode but with video? I tend to shoot in shutter priority to get that film blur, but can do so in either movie S mode or picture S mode. Any advantages to one over the other?
@@VicBarry Yeah exactly. I could make a movie two ways: be in "shutter priority" mode and click the movie record button OR be in "movie" mode and click the record button. The advantage I see of shutter priority is then I can also take photos between video shoots, while in movie mode I can't take photos. Is the other advantage simply that you can re-configure the menus/buttons differently between the two modes? Anything I'm missing? P.S. Thanks for the tip to hit 'Fn' while in the menus. I did not know that!
@@PureGlide Gotcha, the menu functions / settings are very different for video mode and photo mode, so depending on what mode you're in, you may have different functionality. You can cusomtize the menus for each one, even for the fn button, but to display the video functions by pressing the fn button, you must be in video mode and not photo mode, if that makes sense.
Vic I am trying to figure out if I could use the Sony ZV-1 for a traveling interview camera. I do corporate interviews and talking head interviews. I like the one button Bokeh button that might be just enough to add that look to my interviews. I have seen hundreds of V1 Vlogger reviews but I have yet to see anyone using it a a 2 person interview in a studio or run and gun office setup. If you have the time I would love to see how it might do.
Hey Glenn, hhhhhmmmmm...I'm not sure to be honest. I can certainly try it. But first thoughts are that the one touch bokeh button will instantly change your shutter speed so depending on what the other camera is then you'll have 2 very different frame rates possibly, which may seem a bit jarring for the viewer. But that aside, as long as the scene is well lit, I don't see why it can't work. Again, depending on what the other camera is, you might be making more work for yourself to color match 2 different cameras. If it's all Sony, then, it's gonna be a bit easier. Leave that one with me for a few days and I'll see what I can come up with
@@VicBarry I was thinking. of buying 2 Sony ZV-1's for that reason. I do use Sony A7 III but they are my studio cameras and I hate taking them all over the world and I never know when someone is going to request that I shoot an interview or now a Podcast. Everything must be small to get under the 50lb weight limit and the size limits that brings. I have already had one A7 III stolen and I can't tell you how may times I have had my luggage lost. The issue is that I have seen reviews that say for the Bokeh you have to be right on top of the subject and that get's hard to do on the A camera but eaiser on the B camera. If the Bokeh on the main camera is non-existent and the B camera is good that may still an issue. I can but 2 Z1's fr the price of almost every other camera out there considering the lenses. That's for the advice, love your TH-cam channel.
Hey Glenn, I’ve shot quite a number of testimonials last year (none this year because of the obvious) fro London to New York and I’d always carry my gear on the flight. Normally it’s 2 of us travelling. Usually it’s a GH5 and an S1H. Audio recorder, batteries etc. The only thing we’d check in is a suitcase with clothes and a few tripods. Lights etc are in the carry on too. It works quite well and the words “commercial camera gear” works wonders. Personally, for pro work I’d be very unlikely to use a ZV1 for an interview situation to be honest. The sensor, compared to the A7III is not even in the same league. On the bokeh side of things, that’s directly related to the lens you’re using and more importantly the sensor size. The one touch bokeh is a nice touch but as mentioned it’ll change the shutter speed to whatever it needs to pull off the effect and to get any decent DOF you’ll need some serious distance between your talent and the background. Hope this helps
@@VicBarry not yet. but this might be a deal breaker for me... i really don't understand why sony just did not included cine 3 and 4. i love the cine4 profile which i'm using on my sony ax700 and love the final results.

(It seems to import the clip in turtle mode and has a fancy feature of speeding up and slowing down a clip all on its own, and trying to change it out of that setting is near impossible for me). So confused. Is it a shutter priority thing? 🤔😩
Hi there. What mode are you recording the video in on the ZV1 - and is it 4k
Great tutorial!!! Huge help!
Great video! I love how you say "thirty" ☺️👊🏽
@Sam Ib you can turn down the playback speed to 50% if your slow 😉
I'm just messing you lol
HI, very useful videos, in 4K mode, my ZV1 getting heat, is it normal
It is indeed

This was great. Thank you. Do you have any idea why under my 4K record settings I only have two possibilities 25p 100M and 25p 60M ? Yiou have 4 options shown in the video.
Hi Mark, that's the only options you have in 4K. For the other speeds like 120P etc. you have to be in Full HD mode
can you check it support touch focus during video recording, please..
Hey there. It does indeed has touch focus

Thanks for the info bud, you're a legend! Just purchased mine, and amped to start making use of this awesome lil gadget.
No worries dude. Enjoy the new cam. Let me know how it works out for you and if there’s a specific tutorial you think should be covered let me know
Hi Vic, kindly guide how to pause while recording in zv1, and then resume, thanks
Hey. You can’t pause. It’s either start recording or stop recording.
@@VicBarry I wish it was possible, but thanks a lot for the confirmation Vic:)
Thank you for the video. It made it easy for me to understand the camera setting, and learn more about my camera. Much appreciation ! P.s of you read this comment, can you help me with turning on the stead shooting, it’s dimmed 😌
Dear @Vic Barry, thanks a lot about tutorial. Can you tell how can I mirror the lcd panel to my computer screen ??
Hey Vic, how can I remove the settings of my camera zooming in once I press record? 😊
Just keep in mind that you’ll have tonformate the card when you switch from one region to the other
Also, the 120p and 60p are only available in 1080
@@VicBarry Thanks Vic
Vic, thanks this was great. Looks like you are set to NTSC. And yet you are in Ireland. Is there a reason you choose this over PAL? Thanks.
Hey John, thank you. Yeah. I use NTSC because it offers more frame rates
@@VicBarry Thanks! Good to know.
Impossible to say really Maeve. What’s the problem you had with battery? Best bet though is talk to Sony, especially if it’s only 4 months old
The battery exhausted. I managed to charge it back but it died again after a 30 minute video & I had it plugged in to charge while filming. It seemed to not take the charge again & then the shutter problem started. I purchased a new battery & tried that today but the problem is still there. Really appreciate you replying. Thanks. I’ll contact Sony.
hello vic ! question i want to shoot night videos or even day at 1080p which 1080p is the best setup to get great video quality?
Hey there 👋 for the ZV1 keep the aperture at 1.8 and the shutter speed at 1/50 and mess around with the ISO to get the best image. High iso will bring more noise to the image but see what looks good for you 👍
Hi great video! However I do not have all the options on my record settings. Would you be able to tell me how I can get these options?
Hey Lauren, which settings exactly?
@@VicBarry Hi Barry, I don’t have the option to select 30 frames per second or any additional a. I only have 25 and 50
Change the region and you’ll get 30 and 60. 👍

Thanks Vic, this was really helpful mate
Glad it helped How's the ZV-1 going?
Hi Vic, love your vids. I used all the settings in this video. I seems like when my sony-zv1 have been on (not even recording - but also while recording) it starts lagging. It then helps when I turn it off. Do you have any idea how I can fix this? Thanks a lot :)
Hey Henrik, thank you. When you say lagging, how’d you mean exactly. Is the video on screen a bit “stuttery” or something else entirely?
@@VicBarry Thanks for your reply. No it's both when I'm recording that it's very stuttery and also when I view the file after recording. Then it of course recorded the sound nice and 'on time' but the screen is clearly very very stuttery..
Hhhmmmm what mode are you in. It’s either a fault or your shutter speed is way too low
@@VicBarry Alright, what should my shutter speed be at. It's just on ISO auto?
@@henrikhjarsbaek depends on the frame rate, if it's 24p / 30 p then the shutter should be on 1/50 or 1/60
@Vic Barry does sony zv-1 have focus peak lines?
Hey there m, it sure does. You thinking of getting the camera?
Vic Barry already got the camera but cant find the settings
You’ll only see them in manual focus....
Love your videos…. One thing. In video, what picture profile do think is best?
On the ZV-1, HLG2 is decent enough if you're doing some color grading, but to be honest, unless you're planning on doing that, then no picture profile looks pretty great!
Great tutorial

Dear Vic Barry, how do I change autofocus/re-autofocus while I’m shooting video on the Sony ZV-1? Also, what programs do you use for post-processing video? Could you do a hands-on video on that?
Hi Vic
Really top video.
Hey there, to get the different frame rates you do need to switch the region from PAL To NTSC ;)
Is there a quick function to change between 25p 4k to eg 120p hd for slow mo action?? cheers
Use the memory recall setting
Do you have videos where you explain in detail and for beginners what frames per second, resolution, shutter speed and all those variables mean?
I may get the Sony ZV-1 but all these topics are new to me and a bit overwhelming trying to learn how to use the camera plus understanding the definitions at the same time. Thanks in advance.
Hi! What about the rest of the setting options? THANK YOU SO MUCH BY THE WAY
Hey there. There’s over 40 Sony zv-1 vids on my channel. I’m sure you’ll find what you need.
I learned some things. Thanks for posting. 👍🏾
Sweet. That’s great to hear. Anything else you’d like to see about the ZV-1?
Vic Barry Yes can I see some sample photos? I don’t want to carry my a7iii with me all the time and I'd like to see if this camera can double as an every day cam for food, flowers, street photography and casual portraits.
Absolutely. That video will be coming soon. However Lightroom hasn’t been updated to take the raw files from the ZV1 yet 😞
Vic Barry Seriously? That's kind of surprising. Hopefully soon. I appreciate you sir!
Yep. 🙏🙌
this is so so helpful thank you!
Thanks Alicia, how are you finding g the ZV1 so far?
Do you recommend buying this for concert? It last hour and I am just going to put on tripod. My concern is between the file they might have video looses which camcorder can handle this issue. Thanks
Hi there. You should be good for an hour. But maybe bring a usb battery pack to keep things constantly powered.
Hello Vic. When you put these settings into the camera which mode on the camera should you use. Intelligent auto or Movie. Find this hard. Thanks Steve
Hey Steve,
Movie mode all the way. Intelligent auto is fine but personally I wouldn’t use it
Thank you Vic. I'm watching your video again. I'm crap at these things. Hopping to learn as I go along. Sometimes I wish I had of bought another Gopro. Lol 👍
Ha. No way my man. Just keep practicing. What’s the worst that can happen?
Thank you for this! I'm finally going from video on my phone to a camera haha! What tripod do you use that can do overhead shots as well as straight on?
Hey Jessica. Currently I’m using a light stand with a ball head.
@@VicBarry YAY! I missed that. I just got it. Thank you so much!

Howya Vic, thanks for the tips. I am looking to record my band's 2hr+ live shows. Hit Record and forget, but worried it might #overheat, any experience of 2hr+ continuous recording ? 👍🏻
Hey there. I reckon it should be fine but for 2 hours you’d probably need a dummy battery to be honest
@@VicBarry thanks Vic. Yep, I'd pair it with a cage and stick a external battery on it. Does the screen have an off timer, as once the position is set I wouldn't need to see the screen so that might reduce the long term heat (for a constant 2hrs say) ?
No but you could dim the brightness as low as it’ll go. But to be honest I’ve done well over 2 hours with a dummy battery with zero issues
@@VicBarry good to know Vic thanks 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey there. I don’t have much experience with this to be honest but I’m pretty positive that there is no nightshot mode in the ZV1
I don't seem to have access to the same frame rates you have, any tips as to why this may be?
Hi there. If you change from pal - ntsc in the region settings you’ll have them
Not sure if you went over this but when i press record it zooms in … how do i remove that
Is there any reason to use 'movie' mode over normal picture mode but with video? I tend to shoot in shutter priority to get that film blur, but can do so in either movie S mode or picture S mode. Any advantages to one over the other?
Hey there, not sure I follow you here...are you saying hitting the movie record while in photo mode?
@@VicBarry Yeah it does, cheers
@@PureGlide No worries, let me know how it works out
Vic I am trying to figure out if I could use the Sony ZV-1 for a traveling interview camera.
Hope this helps
does the zv1 has cine4 color profile? thx.
Cine1, Cine2 but no Cine 4 I'm afraid - Did you get the camera?
@@VicBarry not yet. but this might be a deal breaker for me... i really don't understand why sony just did not included cine 3 and 4. i love the cine4 profile which i'm using on my sony ax700 and love the final results.
