  • For the past year, my pond has been mostly a failure. Well, no more! I have two tons of bentonite clay and I am getting ready to fix and seal my pond so that it will be a successful duck pond in the future.

      I worked on a park renovation jobsite for half a year, and all my bosses and journeymen co-workers were machine operators. It is not as easy as it looks, there are many moving parts which they control simultaneously, and it takes lots of coordination and muscle memory to be smooth & efficient. According to my boss, a good machine operator should be able to completely fill a 15 ton dump truck in 2 minutes. That's crazy right?!

    1. Once the bentonite is laid out, don’t step on it!!!!
    2. If you are going to have cattle/goats/pigs eventually, fence this area off so it can only be used by your water fowl.
    Your very expensive pond will be punctured by feet and hooves and will drain if you don’t be very careful around it.
    If that ever happens please consider a plastic (fish safe, non-toxic) liner with geotextile. Much cheaper and will last longer.

    • @kyasa5
      @kyasa5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Mike Barnes To do this properly you need a /minimum/ of 60 cm depth (23.5") of clay. The clay should be laid in 15 cm (6") layers and compacted by heavy equipment after each layer application.
      So, the depth and compaction should be sufficient enough so ducks can do some digging although I would definitely increase the thickness of the clay layer to be safe. I mentioned larger animals with hooves in my previous comment as their weight focused on such a small area (the hoof) is more than enough to puncture through the clay.
      There are many cases in BC of deer walking into these types of ponds for a drink and puncturing the clay leading to a drained pond.

    • @kyasa5
      @kyasa5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Mr Hank You need to build up the clay layer in 15 cm lifts. Why 15 cm lifts? Well, this conversation is starting to go down the road of soil engineering but essentially in a lab some dude tested compaction strengths of different soil layer thicknesses and 15 cm was determined to be "the effective depth of influence" or in normal language, the maximum depth at which significant improvement was measurable. So you once a 15 cm layer is compacted, you can add these layers on top of each other and you'll have a nice strong base unless something disturbs the structural integrity of the soil layer (a hoof from a nice fat cow, haha).
      Note: I am not an engineer or a soil scientist but I need to know these things as an Ecological Restoration grad student.

    • @straubdavid9
      @straubdavid9 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Hank I would go with 59.5cm and split the difference just to be safe ~8^)

      May I suggest, doing a little research on what is named a "dew pond".
      In pasture areas where fog often occurs, it is possible to build a flat dish depression in the ground, which will allow the condensation of the fog to turn into a drinking place for livestock.
      Animal dung was used as the sealant. A layer of rock made it hoof resistant.

    I used bentonite in my clay when I was a potter. That stuff ain't cheap! That must have cost you minimum five grand just for materials. I have a similar project in mind, I'll be interested to see how you do. I want to make a pond out of a low spot in my yard. Always enjoy the videos, I bought a pair of white ducks 3 months ago and it has been a lot of fun watching them grow. Their wings were tiny for a long time, then started to grow! Now they are starting to quack and "croak," rather than peep, which I think means I have one male and one female. The male's tail feather sticks up like a hook. The female seems submissive to the male, and even though they are the same size, his head is always above hers. I named them Henny Penny and Chicken Little, after favorite storybook characters

    • @kyasa5
      @kyasa5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Dig a test hole and check to see where your water table is. Might be able to get away with a groundwater pond. If not, I’d highly suggest doing a liner pond instead of bentonite clay. As you said the clay is very expensive and can fail if a hole is punctured. Water fowl probably won’t be able to puncture it but tree branches could. Look into fish safe, non-toxic plastic liner with geotextile. Easier to install, cheaper, and lasts longer.

    I've been trying to find this video for like a week. I love your videos Morgan and I really hope you read this comment. I understand your main goal is filling the pond with water. But I also understand that you want a thriving ecosystem, and with that I recommend adding some sort of mechanical filtration to your pond. Without filtration, oxygen can't be dispersed throughout the water. With -out water aeration, your pond can't grow plants nearly as easy and things like frogs and other wildlife will not be able to thrive. Adding that oxygenation can really benefit your ducks and the surrounding ecosystem. I highly recommend

    I love your videos... I'm so glad Lil is getting better too. My family members were all looking at me funny because I was crying like a baby that video. Lol. I hope things keep going good for you and your wife. Can't wait to keep watching your future videos.

    Thanks for the reminder, I'm almost out of clay. Bentonite absorbs oil and draws gunk out of your face; and boy do you feel it! I use it on my hair, makes my curls pop

    In south-central Kentucky we have Karst bedrock, which is a porous easily dissoluble type of limestone (it's what produce Mammoth Cave), farmers would dig field ponds for their cattle only to have it leak out. What they figured out was they would put Hogs in the pond area, I guess their wallowing would compact and seal our heavy clay soil stopping the leaking out.

    Nice Little project, Glad to see you're getting the hang of the tractor. If you have space try and keep it inside as much as you can save the life of the hydraulic hoses and also a well-kept machine is easier to get a good resale on whenever you need to upgrade.
