Nalanda university was included in tentative list of world heritage site in 2009 but was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2016.Alumini- Aryabhatta, Shilbhadra,Aryadev -Student of Nagarjuna, Atisha,Chandrakirti,Dharmakirti, Dharampala

Nalanda Mahavihara also known as old Nalanda University was declared a UNESCO heritage site in (2016). Mahayana was taught here.

A University's renown rests on the best intellectual minds passionate about the acquisition, storage and dissemination of what is universally relevant and is not parochial, exclusive or motivated by hidden agenda of a few. Amartya Sen the Nobel laureate economist who used to be associated with the revival of Nalanda University has sadly been removed from the board. It is doubtful whether scholars from the East (China, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan) will be jostling for seats with the new gatekeepers. Pitiable is the decline and fall of great civilizations, look at Bihar now and harken back to the Gupta age, what a contrast ! It is sad to learn from ruins, what remains of the heritage ?
