Guys... I cannot thank you enough. I understood the man, who didn't speak English as well, perfectly but your extra effort to translate for others is such a great mark of integrity. I am so grateful for this video. I am going to spar for the first time, I do NOT want to hurt my partners, but I was coming into the session with the mindset of "I will win, I will beat the teacher", but now I see how completely flawed my thinking was. I am forever grateful for these lessons. You two are another set of pillars that I will use as grounding in my journey to becoming champion.
With your mentality of being able to understand when you’re wrong, you will go far my guy! What’s the update looking like 11 months later after this comment?
This was a well needed clip and overlooked subject. People often get so caught up in sparring and lose focus and forget the purpose of sparring. They forget their "why" and focus on their "win". Thanks for the post! I'll be sure to pass this on!! 🙏🏾
Such good advice here. When I spar I set goals like ok I need to parry a punch this round. And I might eat 3 before I get it, but I'm not worried about those 3 just my 1
Glad you found the tips useful. As a beginner, it is important to focus on your basics and try to spar as much as possible. The more sparring you do, the better you will get a reading people on offense and defense.
Great video 👍 I don't even know which tip is best. they're all great. I just wish I could show it to everybody at my gym! I am pretty tall, 6' 4" and my old gym was more traditional Thai style gym (the head teacher was 6' Thai guy, which is tall for a Thai so his style worked well for me.) When I switched to a gym where all the trainers are really short small guys, and have a really inside boxing Dutch style. So even though they are good I have to find ways to do things different because that mid-range where the other guy can punch me is exactly where I don't want to be. I have to find ways to stay at my range and kick instead of doing the inside combos they teach. I have also had a problem with guy is trying to "win" sparring matches. When I first switched gyms the first time I sparred, every partner I had would escalate how hard they started hitting every time I hit something and at the gym I had come from you land your shots and then kind of back off and reset and go again. but instead they would act like I hadn't hit them with the shots that I landed but pulled so they didn't do damaged and would come through and throw full on kicks and punches. my third partner ended up throwing so hard he broke my ribs with a teep... stupid people let their ego make them mad and just go to hard when you're just trying to learn. I had landed like six head kicks on him and pulled all of them so they didn't do any damage. So he got frustrated and was throwing as hard as he could. I find this is a consistent problem at gyms that aren't run by Thai teachers.
Thank you for making this video, sparred for the first time yesterday and I’ve been under the impression that I did really bad because I got my ass kicked a bit lol but now I see it was actually pretty productive
Yes good tips👍🏻..for sure is not about winning in sparring is to improve your self and be more focus and try not to be tense be relax and adjust your timing and stay un your fighting positions..👊🏻
The first tip is probably what I needed to hear the most. Ive recently switched over to muay thai from kickboxing and i was worried that Id get wrecked during sparring if I dont switch up to the thai style.
...even in Lumpinee they actually fight for getting better and not merely winning, cause getting better at predicting their opponent in the fight, helps them win later....
That’s why on light sparring days I really work on stuff that I’m bad on but I do focus to much on winning sparring Aswell so maybe I should be more patient but I have a weird blend of a Muay Thai and k1 style
Thank you so much for the upload now I know what to do... you should make a video on muay thai vs k1 fighter, like what to do when they throw alot of punches
If you spar a K-1 you need to have good Boxing defense and be comfortable blocking punches. Then you can relax and work on your strategy. K-1 fighters can be difficult if they have good Boxing.
Another great video. Training and sparring is NEVER to win... if you have this attitude of wanting to win sparring? you are probably type A personality or totally insecure with yourself....bit of an idiot in the gym and guaranteed everyone laughs at you in training. Keep calm, relaxed, timing, balance, precision... These are the marks of a great fighter... anyone can spaz out and throw combos it isn’t hard at all... if you end up with a smart nak muay you will get humiliated. Great share and keep up the good work.
Sparring is all about improving, and staying calm is a great way to activate the thinking brain. Unfortunately, in Thailand particularly, you always have guys who come to the gym who want to show off how good they are. Egos never die. Thanks for the comment.
This is mostly true. I have sparred some Thais why tried to knock me out before, but they are few and they usually are not the best ones. Anyone who has an ego and needs to prove something, is typically mid level Thai.
I gained a lot because of your video can you please do one about fear in sparring or how to lose stress in sparring it will help many beginners like me .PEACE AND LOVE
The best way to deal with your fear is to realize that the worst case scenario is not as bad as you think. The fear of getting knocked out, us much worse than actually getting knocked out. In sparring, if you are with people who are controlled, you should never get knocked out or spar with people who can. Beginners should always spar in a controlled pace until they are fully comfortable hitting and getting hit.
You gave me hope, man I'm not that experienced in fighting, but I'm using correct techniques and I've got much power and I'm not scared of getting hit, but I'm worried about why I cannot think or use the right technique when Sparring or fighting, its like I freeze and I stop thinking, etc. Any tips besides that? I'm a kickboxer.
Just do it regularly and it will improve. Also simplify so just use guard and jab or guard and teep like video said. Then you don't have to think about your strikes as much
I've only spar 5-6 times max because I cannot find someone of my size to have a nice sparring session and I have a fight next month. So finally my coach sent me to this gym to spar someone about my size. This guy came to me hard, he was putting a lot of pressure to me walking me around the ring. And I was trying to defend and remember what I have learned in my classes and put them into practice but this guy was coming to me very hard and I didn't have a chance. My coach yelled at me the next day saying that I did terrible and he told me that if they go hard, I go hard. But then, where is the part where I learn? This guy probably has multiple fights and a lot of sparring sessions while I haven't had the chance to spar that much. I've been so pissed this past week. I'm going back tomorrow to practice again. My coach told me that if I let the same thing happen, he's pulling me out of the fight. But I don't wanna go to spar hard, I want to practice all the things I have learned in class. I'm not scared about hard sparring, I just don't want extra injuries before the fight.
@@theunusualdispenser9474 I lost lol I gassed out in the second round. I spar more now and the fight taught me what not to do and it doesn't help to go all out at the beginning

Coaches at Simbi are badass, and yeah those people who go into sparring for a fight are the worst. its like that's the moment to shine because they dont actually compete. Biggest flaw beginners have.
@@bedo348 definitely practice, practice, practice. I got a bag to practice on. I also found that I was stiff so I started doing stretches which helped me with my kick dexterity.
Lots of sparring with different people. You will start figuring out what works and what doesn't work and you will notice that you favor aggression, defense, kicking etc.
Finding what works for your build and tools. Personally I’m 6’2” 190 lbs so you’d think I’d be comfortable at range. I’m not. I prefer the clinch. I found out from sparring smaller guys that were able to get in under my arms and land power and exit where I couldn’t before learning to clinch. Just keep at it. Keep yourself safe.
@@Sam-tg6ee idk what my reach correlates to bu I believe 77 or 78”. Nothing crazy. If you have orangutan arms then definitely stay behind your jabs and teeps. Just be sure to utilize your shell for defense.

Thats not the best mindset. You should be MORE worried about those three that hit, think why it happend and how you would fix it to improve your parry
The fact that you mention others having a potential K1 / Kickboxing background is on point.
