    Hi Ed, good job on the crown got! Everyone always says it's hopeless and here you are with Dragon blood! Great! As for the cymbidiums, I just love them, they reward with me with huge stems of flowers a bit like a gladiola but much better because they're orchids! Just put them outside in summer but not in direct sunlight and bring them inside when it starts getting cold. Water and feed the same as your other orchids. I'm not an expert but your problem may be because you separated them. They like to be bunched together and you have separated them into too many individual plants. Good luck and thanks for sharing!

    I do like the net idea around the dendrobiums.....all I know about cymbidiums is you have to have at least 3 back blubs for them to spike......I agree with you with the the crown root....bad water.

    My Cymbidium go rather well outside all year round but they have a roof over them. They get sun most of the day. I feed with slow release fertilizer and use the remainings of epiphyte orchid watering on them. I water prufusely during summer, less in winter. They put on growths all year round. Last year I had 12 spikes on some of them. Some start to bloom in september/october, others start much later but the blooming lasts for at least 2 months. Winter: The lowest temperature I get is about 4 celsius during the night. Sometimes ir comes down to 9 celsius during the day.
    Very easy orchids for me, Ed.

    I have used Physan 20 for black rot. It stops the rot, but if it is on the main stem, say goodbye to the orchid. Very good info on rot, Ed.

    Also, because cimbidiums spend time outdoors, they attract bugs...I found it best to put them in a garage with light in winter, so as not to transport bugs indoors

      Just came across your comment Jennifer so I do apologise to you for the delay in replying.
      I never bring plants into the house. After leaving them outside during the warmer months they go into the greenhouse for winter. Once again please accept my apologies.

    Sorry that I have little experience with cymbidiums. I only grew a single cymbidium. It stayed outside in the fall until the temps dropped down to just above freezing. Then I brought it in, put it in the sunniest window and didn't water it until the flower spikes were well established a few months later. Had to get rid of it as this was my source of thrips.
    Dragons blood is not easy to get in Canada. Mostly sold as a food supplement and not as a plant prophylactic. I will have to import it from another country.
    Had to look up Phrag Ainsworthii. Hadn't heard of it. I'm growing a parent, Phrag sedenii. It is one of the faster growing phrags in my collection.
    Great informative video. Don't even mind it even if it's a bit longer than usual.

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phrag Ainsworthii was first registered in 1878 if my memory serves me right and in 1883? the same parentage was used and the offspring named Calurum. Some growers use either name. A lovely plant and ,like sedenii, is a very fast grower once established. Dragons Blood is not easy to get over here as well.... just have to be lucky on eBay There are two trees which produce red sap ...I think the other one is a dracaena? relative, the best being from the Croton lechleri tree.

    I keep my cymbidiums outside till late september/early october ( till the temperatures goes down to 5C).Then i bring them inside for winter and keep them in a cool but bright room. Reduce watering. Just watch pseudobulbs dont shrivel too much. They are very hardy orchids. Mine get abused massively!

    Hello Ed, I love your video. My question to you is can you tell me the ingredients for mixing the dragon's blood to kill crown rot? Thank you for your help. Virginia

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Virginia. Unfortunately there are no secret ingredients in Dragons Blood. It is a natural product of the Croton lechleri tree from the Amazon. The sap which is drawn off in similar fashion to rubber trees is blood red in colour hence the name. The native people use it for a whole matter of complaints. It is sometimes referred to as Sangre de Grande and it has become available in the UK on Amazon and also eBay.... it has got to be the 100% unadulterated sap and is sold in 10ml or 100ml bottles. Sorry I can't help you more....have a great weekend.
      Ed.

      Eds Orchids Hi Ed, I’m sorry I guess I wasn’t clear as what I was asking. I wanted to know do I mix this with water? If I do what are the ratio of water with Dragon’s blood to use to kill the crown rot. I was able to buy some dragons blood from Amazon would I use it full strength? I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you Virginia

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again Virginia. You don't mix the Dragons Blood with anything just use the raw sap as it comes for a 100% cure. A couple of drops directly onto the rot will kill it dead.
      Hope this helps,
      Ed.

    Oh perhaps you can help me with my Dendrobium kingianum. I have to say that mine is a small clump consisting of 8 PBs. I give it bright light year round, and stop watering altogether in November. There is something that always develops in the Apex of the plant but it usually aborts. Last year, 2 of those formations became keikis....
    This year it's grown 2 new PBs and I'd say they are mature. Should I just keep it outside just to the point it freezes and stop watering now?
    I'm really unclear when it's supposed to flower. I see many in bloom at fall shows but been told they should bloom in spring.
    Any advice will be appreciated and thanks for your helpful comments.

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know much about dendrobiums but I would only stop watering completely for the 4 or 5 weeks you keep them very cold. Otherwise I would keep an eye on the pseudobulbs for signs of dehydration. They are a nuisance for producing keikis and there must be a reason for it..... I'm determined to find out why this happens.
      Ed.

    When you say “grow stones” did you mean perlite Ed?

    • @kareneaton190
      @kareneaton190 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also ask this question. Margaret mentioned she was expecting a delivery of grow stones when I asked about perlite. I am a little confused.

    • @lynnbrooks5503
      @lynnbrooks5503 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Painted Moth. My understanding of grow stones is small pebbles of varying types, but what I saw in this video looks like perlite to me, but there is a product coming out of Europe that looks and feels like pumice to me.

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grow stones are not perlite. Growstones are manufactured in the USA and are made from 2nd hand glass bottles and calcium carbonate..... harder than perlite
      .... and a little like pumice.but in my opinion much better than the two.
      Ed

    • @lynnbrooks5503

      Eds Orchids. Ah, I knew I heard that description before. There is an orchid mix comes out of Holland that has become quite popular here in Oz. I have many orchids in this mix and I usually take them out but I always keep the stones from it which I have described to others as pumice.
      So where do you get your grow stones Ed?
      .

    Hi Ed. Is your Dragons Blood and oil. Thanks so much for this info. I have 3 paph's with crown rot.

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Dragons Blood is a red latex sap and is collected like the white sap from a rubber tree. It is fantastic for all manner of things when it is in its raw state and kills rot very quickly. If you haven't got any to hand then pour a little hydrogen peroxide into the crown....when the fizzing stops dry out the crown with soft kitchen roll and then dust the affected area with cinnamon. Hope this is of some help to you.
      Ed
