@diamondchris6491 From the start, the writers constructed Kensi as this hardcore, beautiful female agent, who was brought up by her soldier father; then after his murder, she was homeless for a long part of her life, so she had to learn how to survive on her own, and was always very tough and also closed emotionally. Deeks, even tho he also had a difficult childhood with his abusive father whom he shot when he was 11, still had a fantastic mom and was not homeless, so he always had love and a secure home around him and so he grew up to be more open emotionally, and more easy-going than Kensi, with a great sense of humor, at the same time he was still strong, skillful & very confident man. And that mix attracted Kensi to Deeks in the first place. She started to open emotionally thanks to him, and that episode, with the 'frozen lake' metaphor, from which this scene is from, exactly showed that. Kensi hit him here because she was afraid of her own, very strong feelings for Deeks after they slept together for the first time. She didn't want to fall deeper in love because of her fears (fear of complications as their job is very dangerous), and seeing Deeks so vulnerable and not able to take a shot when she was in danger ( after they slept together she became his prime concern, so he was afraid he would miss and hurt her in the process, he started to over analyze things), made her even angrier because she understood he fell very deeply in love with her too, already. She was afraid, and couldn't handle her feelings and this whole situation, because she was always more emotionally closed as I wrote earlier. So by making her hit Deeks so hard and react this violently, the writers wanted to convey all of this- so in reality, it was an actual sign of Kensi's deep love for Deeks and her inability to deal with it. This is why at the end of this very episode, Kensi said to Deeks that they would talk about it, 'their thing', and she promised him she would get better at this, he just needs to be patient with her. So yeah, this punch was too hard, but at the same time, it was all so beautifully written and very meaningful!
She is like a young girl with a huge crush, scared to tell him how she feels. He is afraid to do the same, although he doesn't hit her. He makes joked instead.
I thought they went too far in this particular scene at first too but I understand why they did it. @@michellelewis2132 Deeks actually does tell her and is not afraid. He was always much more emotionally open, and from the start, he had no problem showing and saying that he is interested romantically in Kensi. Yes, he later changed a little and was a little afraid to make a move, but he still made the first move - the first serious, official kiss when they were NOT undercover. In general, Deeks was always more open than Kensi.
Ouch, the sound of that face punch-poor Deeks!
