@blackdragoncustoms The external microphone definitely makes a difference and solves this problem for some people. The trick is in where the mic is mounted. It sounds like the mic is sensitive enough to peak out, so you will probably have a bit of trial and error before you find the right place on your bike or on your person.
@montoyaohboya1 Drift makes a microphone specifically for the HD170 (which you can find here: revzilla.com/motorcycle/drift- hd170-external-microphone). To maintain waterproofing and keep out dirt and moisture, Drift suggests getting the Rear Silicon Cover which attaches on the back after the mic is connected (found here: revzilla.com/motorcycle/drift- hd170-rear-silicon-cover)
This comes directly from Drift: "The camera has to be in photo mode and then the remote can be used to take pictures. It is not able to take pictures if the camera is in video mode, so taking pictures with remote while filming will not work."
For that application, I'd recommend using the waterproof case for additional protection. This way if the camera takes an impact, it will be protected. ~Ali
@joelbphillips The socket can output and HD signal, however, the plug is not actually HDMI, so it won't support live video streaming to an external monitor. Though small, the best thing to use is the built in LCD screen. -- Chris K.
@equoowe I don't have much experience with the Contour, but we like the Drift a lot better than the GoPro. The available External Mic is a big +1 as well.
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your Drift Camera. Have you tried reaching out to the Drift for technical support or possibly a warranty replacement? ~Ali
Thank you thank you thank you. This is the most in-depth review I've been able to find. It shows everything. I appreciate it. I may just be sold on this thing. :)
Nice informative video. Only one glaring mistake really..........the external mike connect to the HDMI socket (left hand socket when viewed from the rear) and NOT the right hand side USB charging socket.
Can you use an external monitor connected via the HDMI socket? So that you can see what you are shooting? OR is it only for connecting after recording? Cheeers.
when the lcd screen goes into standby does the entire camera shutoff so that its not using any battery, or do you have to shutoff the camera by pressing the on/off button?
good review, still not 100% sure what i should buy between this, the Gopro and the Contor camera, sound is the biggest issue for me, Gopro sound seems pretty bad in cars, Contor seems a lot better but the option to have a external microphone is a pretty big deal for me plus the screen and remote are really pushing me to buy the Drift HD170
I would not purchase this camera I have one and I am having a lot of problems inserting the micro sd card it will not clip in, you pay for cheap stuff and you get the problems that come with cheap stuff, would much rather have a go pro

@Razkull Actually, no, they have a rear Silicon cover for you to use in that situation. Item #747228 on our site.
@AlanIvideos Whoops, our bad. It happens every once in a while.
@BrianSmithNow Thanks for watching!
Anytime, dude.

@TheHitcheroo The video can be slowed down in post-production but the camera does not have a slow motion feature.
The waterproof case is a separate purchase. ~Ali
The Drift HD records in 1080p, but the Drift HD720 records in 720p. ~Ali

@1wetstick Cam mounted to the front left turn signal arm. Crash on the right side. Cam is 100%, just dusty. Not a tall tale. Just the facts my man.

Thanks for the info! I really needed to know what the microphone input was like!

I have a Go Pro Hero2 but my friend is getting this BOTH AMAZING!
So you're suggesting a USB powered external mic?..hmm where do you buy those?
@RCRdirt Just one ; (
will the cheaper model of this camera record in 1080p?
Can this camera shoot in slow motion???
Thanks, this was really thorough. Awesome review
Thanks.
you can connect more than 1 camera on 1 remote
