The best scene in the best episode of one of the best shows to be produced for the television medium. Two powerful actors at the top of their craft. Every nuance of two men being true to their faith. I am no Catholic, not even a Christian, and yet I believe in the truth of this scene.

Prior to this scene when the priest arrives there is a brief discussion if he should address the president by his name or by his title. Bartlett asks to be referred to as “Mr. President” in the Oval Office not because of ego, but to bear in mind the weight of the decisions he must make in that room as President. But then at the end, his priest calls him Jed, something almost no one on the show but his wife ever does. His priest knows that Jed failed his own moral code and his guilt won’t let him hide behind the office of the presidency. He asks the man not the president “would you like me to hear your confession now?”

It bothers me that Jed wants to be called Mr. President but does not return the respect by calling his priest Father. After all the president is chosen by man, priests are chosen by God.

What's annoying about this scene with no cuts is that the priest does not know about the rabbi or the Quaker.

GOD instructs governments to enact capital punishment.
"if man sheds mans blood... by man shall his blood also e shed." Gen 9:6
“ ‘Anyone who takes the life of a human being is to be put to death." Leviticus 24:17

And then he sent His Son and he taught us to not throw the first stone. Please don't tell me what God thinks from text written when people didn't know it took sperm & ova to create a fetus.

This is the same Book of Leviticus that requires punishment when you wear clothing made of different fibers and if you plant different crops in the same field (Leviticus 19:19)? The same Leviticus that says you can't sit on the same couch as a woman on her period (Leviticus 15:19-21)? The same Leviticus that says a man with a limp or a person born with dwarfism may not worship in the temple ( (Leviticus 21:14)?
What kind of epic moron takes seriously any of the gibberish in Leviticus?

And then God sent his son Jesus Christ with a New Testament that supersedes the old law.
Matthew 5:38-40: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.”
Or John 8: 1-11, when he says “let he who is without sin cast the first stone,” indicating that only God could condemn an individual to death.
If you are claiming to be a Christian, you may want to read the New Testament and see what Jesus actually said and instructed his followers to do. I suspect you will find most of your political beliefs are in stark opposition to His teachings.

@@thomthom6268 the scene with Toby and the rabbi is such a great scene. “For all I know, those teachings reflected the best wisdom of its time. But it’s just plain wrong by any modern standard.”

@@jasonkoch3182 , you make a common misunderstanding between these two passages.
the 1st is the establishment of governmental powers... govt-man
      the 2nd is man-man.
