As far as shooting guards go, Kobe is universally recognized as No. 2 behind MJ.
But depending on who you ask, he's between top 3 and top 10 universally. I wouldn't respect the opinion of anyone that has him lower.

Kobe and MJ hold the record for 9 All-NBA Defense selections. NINE. People always look on the offense side of things but those 3-peat Lakers and Bulls with Kobe and MJ playing perimeter defense were extremely difficult to break down from up top. Playing defense is about attitude so give me a player who wants to be THE stopper, excels when he's mad, and never stops to evolve every aspect of his game beginning his days at 4am in the gym. To have all those attributes plus his mamba mentality to win, there isn't another player in NBA history who's comparable except for MJ. Those are the things that makes him top 3

Yep as far as on everybody's top 3, from a pure athletic standpoint, I'm not sure he's even top 10. He was physically gifted no doubt, but there's nothing necessarily elite about his physical skill-set. But when it comes to pure desire and dedication to perfection, it's Jordan #1, Kobe #2, and a pretty big gap before you come to #3.

In LA Kobe was a God. Came into the NBA at 17 (drafted out of high school) and was immediately dominating seasoned college and NBA players. Grew into one of the greatest American athletes of all time before our eyes. Beloved by most NBA fans but worshiped in LA. Not only a great baller and athlete, but a philosopher and role model in how to achieve anything through hard work and belief in oneself. Truly a man who knew no ceiling. (The man had just won an Oscar (Academy Award)) An incalculable loss to NBA world, and the people of LA. ♥ RIP Mamba and Gianna♥

Very well said, as a Los Angeles native growing up in the 90s getting to witness the life & career of Kobe Bryant as it happen was something truly amazing, A bright mind and soul that inspired and motivated so many. Most would say Kobe got all of his moves from Jordan which is true but Kobe mastered it and did it better in my eyes, seeing him play was a treat seeing play in person was a gift. Kobe "Bean" lives forever!

He might've dominated, but he didn't play much his rookie year due to Eddie Jones being an all-star shooting guard (who the Lakers ended up trading to Charlotte) and Dell Harris who wouldn't play him (who ended up getting fired and replaced by Phil Jackson)

Southern California in general, not just LA. Orange County, San Diego, the Inland Empire. He was THE man. Hell, he even had a ton of fans in central and northern California as well before the Warriors got really popular. He was a Laker through and through his entire career and then obviously died tragically young. I don't know if there will ever be another athlete as good as him who was that legendary for just one team. The closest I could think of in the modern era was Tom Brady, but then he went to play in Florida.

While I wouldn't argue too strongly against anyone who has Kobe top 3, I would probably put him more around 5-10. With all due respect to the late legend, I don't believe he was even the best player on his own team for much of his career. (Shaquille O'Neal request!)
I don't actually have a list or anything. Frankly I find the ranking of players to be a bit tedious. There's no question however that Kobe is one of the most iconic players in NBA history.

This video only had highlights from the back half of Kobe's career. His first 10 years he wore #8 and he wore #24 his last 10 (The Lakers retired both numbers). You see a more savvy, experienced Kobe here, but the much more athletic Kobe with the high flying highlights and the 81 point game, wore #8. His Top 50 plays has my 3 favorite highlights

The lakers were never my favorite team but Kobe was a favorite player of mine. I was devastated when he passed away. These highlights were really good, however they missed the Olympic year with the Redeem Team. If you can watch a highlight video of that team you can see how much of an influence and how important Kobe was to that team. Without him they would have lost for sure.

  • @scotthill1600

I’m not a die hard basketball fan but I loved Kobe on & off the court. Wish I would have seen him play live. Watched him play on tv many times at least, glad to say I knew him long before he passed away. His off the court passion is something to be admired, he left nothing in the tank, lived life to the absolute fullest
You can always find a better video to react to but you guys got a pretty good one here, there are longer ones if your interested either react to them or watch them on your own time if your interested. Kobe was one of a kind
He played injured, since I was a kid I’ve loved the clip of the guy trying to scare/make Kobe flinch, he acts like he’s gonna throw the ball in Kobe’s face from a few inches away & Kobe just stares him down, doesn’t flinch whatsoever. Complete badass move. Most players when injured get off the court & into the locker room quickly, Kobe reminds me of Larry bird in that sense both would suck it up & keep playing even with serious injuries, just cut from a different cloth

His final game highlights would be one of the best things to watch. Also the game against the raptors, I believe, where he drops 81 which is the 2nd most points ever scored in a game with only Wilt Chamberlain having more with a crazy 100 point game.

Watching it live, when he split that double team and hit that pull up jumper I started bawling. The game was like a microcosm of his career. Started off slow(first two years riding the pine, then he took off. I’m the game he missed like his first 4 or maybe more shots I can’t recall ) the game came down to Kobe making heroic shots at the end- 60 and a win. He literally left it all on the floor. I’m getting choked up type this, I really miss that guy.

      @OZYM1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The most missed shots argument is irrelevant.
It’s because Koby took that many shots, that he scored a lot too. You can’t score that high if you’re not constantly trying to score.
Like the NHL great Wayne Gretzky once said “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” This from the top goal scorer in NHL history. I’m pretty sure Gretzky’s missed shots total is high also. Gretzky’s career shooting percentage was 17.6%. That means he missed 82.4% of his shots.
Michael Jordan missed a lot of shots as well. His career shooting percentage was 49.7%. Lebron’s is 50.5% so far.
In Baseball, Ty Cobb still has the highest career batting average at .366. That equates to a “shooting average” of 36.6%. That means that 63.4% of the time, he made an out.
I think your take WAS against Kobe.

      @LuckyLefty92 ปีที่แล้ว

He played 20 years, and was the only perimeter oriented player in the top 5 scoring in NBA history and ALL of them are top 6 to 7 in missed shots. Thats not perspective if you only point out that Kobe was at the top but not that he finished his career as the highest scoring non big man of all time. It's a media driven narrative that will change once Lebron overtakes him in missed shots. Don't say you heard it here first tho

    • @phunkjnky

In terms of all-around skills, Kobe is easily top 3. The dude really had it all: good shooter, amazing post moves, excellent ball handler, good facilitator while also being a top 5 (possibly top 3) all-time defender. He’s definitely in my top 3 when it comes to the best and he was also ranked 3rd by current NBA players a poll that was conducted last season, but he’s also a very polarizing player due to his personality, personal life and style of play and so many people don’t rank him quite as high. One of the best things about Kobe was his insane work ethic and unshakable confidence in himself. I think many people would agree that there’s no one you want more than Kobe when taking the final shot in a big game. The dude never shied away from the spotlight. Just look at his performance in the last quarter of the 2008 Olympic Gold Medal match against Spain. The Netflix Documentary “The Redeem Team” really does a good job showing how “different” Kobe is compared to typical NBA players.

This was a great video. Kobe played 20 years in the NBA from 1996-2016. If you notice in this video he is sporting the number 24 in all the clips. Kobe started his career with 8 as his number and then changed it to 24 in the 2006-2007 season. So if you wanted to do another Kobe reaction video down the road, I would search for his earlier career highlights where he was sporting the number 8, and had a lot more high-flying dunk highlights. Great video! Kobe is my favorite (peep that spelling).

Definitely in my top 3 as well with Michael and LeBron. I tend to weigh differences in eras and differences in play styles more so I don't tend to commit to an exact order but some of my thoughts...I always felt like LeBron has more raw talent and physical ability than both the others but both always seemed more tenacious and clutch. There's no countering Michael's winning (6 championships in 6 times going to the Finals) but Kobe is right there (5 wins in 7 appearances). The thing that gives LeBron's legacy a slight edge is he rarely played with the talent that Kobe and Michael did although when he did is when he won. Gun to my head, I put Michael 1, Kobe 2, LeBron 3. Then you have guys who played in even more vastly different eras like Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson who might also fit into my formula of talent and winning but it's a lot harder to quantify their success in their time vs. these guys now and more recently. Magic is up there with LeBron as most physically gifted and he won a TON, Russell won even more than all of them but had the best team around him for about 10 years straight, Bird is up there with Steph for best pure shooter, Kareem and Wilt are up there for great scorers and winners and big men (oh god, I almost forgot about Shaq). In other words, this is all just a dumb discussion for dumb people like us but it is fascinating to see what different people value more over others.

Not everybody would have Kobe in their all-time top 3. I would say pretty much everybody who knows anything would have him in their all-time top 10. That's not to say he doesn't belong in the top 3, but just that there's enough differing taste and allegiance and opinion among basketball fans for this to be the case. The criticisms you'd hear from non-Kobe fans (of whom there was always a significant number) would be that he couldn't co-exist with Shaq to make the Lakers win whole streaks of championships (like the Bulls did in the 90s), but that one is on Shaq as well as Kobe. Basically there were also years where although Kobe was great, the Lakers weren't great, and the impression was that he was selfish and didn't make his teammates better, wasn't a "team player," all that kind of stuff.

As far as ranking--you should only rank by position---Top five by position is best. Kobe as a "small" forward plays similarly to Jordan and Dr. J, whereas LeBron is more of a power forward. Magic is a freakishly tall guard. Larry Bird played inside and out as a forward. The centers are their own category---Wilt Chamberlain ("The Big Dipper") was an athletic freak at 7'1" 275lbs--a high and long jump champion, Kareem with the atheleticism and sky hook, Bill Russell the incomparable defensive genius with his 10 NBA championships, Shaq, Hakeem Olajuwan. Don't get me started with pure guards along with Magic (Jerry West, Oscar Robertson).

If the question is "best basketball players of all time" purely from an ability standpoint, I don't think many major basketball fans put Kobe in their top 3, a lot of people even leave him off of top 5's.
However, there is clearly more to what makes someone the "best" basketball player. One reliable test is to ask, "Who do kids want to be like?" Or in other words, who do fans want to watch, or who had the biggest impact on the game. With those types of factors, my list is as follows:
    1. Michael Jordan
    2. Lebron James
    3. Kobe Bryant
    4. Steph Curry
    .
Biiigggg Gap after those 4, maybe Magic Johnson?

I'd say the only critique anyone could say about this video choice is that it seems like all the highlights are from Kobe's absolute peak (I'd say like 2005-2013). No highlights from the 3-peat Lakers days with Shaq. I get it though, the vid would be more than twice as long if it covered his whole career. The guy essentially had two HOF careers, one as #8 and one as #24. Also, nobody has his competitive drive anymore. Lebron turns it on at times and props to Playoff Jimmy, but to me Kobe was the last great who really brought the fire night in and night out.
