  • FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt reacts to Michigan’s ground-based win in Happy Valley over a Top-10 Penn State team. He discusses what impressed him most with the Wolverines’ win in their first big test of the season. Klatt also discusses the Jim Harbaugh suspension - what he thinks of the penalty and also the timing of that decision being announced on the Friday afternoon before the game. He also gives his thoughts on what went wrong for Penn State against Michigan and also in this season as a whole. Following the firing of OC Mike Yurcich, he offers his analysis of what Penn State needs to change on offense to take the next step. Klatt then discusses his latest Top 10 rankings and how he ordered Michigan, Georgia and Ohio State plus why he has one of the unbeatens way down at #8. Finally, he discusses Texas A&M’s decision to fire Jimbo Fisher and sink over $75 million into his buyout. Klatt gives his thoughts on how good of a job the A&M head coaching position is in today’s college football landscape.

For people who don't know, Sherrone Moore was hired from a MAC school as a TE coach and Harbaugh moved him up through ranks and made him the OC and a millionaire. That can inspire the type of emotion that was shown.

If you're a fan of Michigan you can take this win and say we dominated them by pounding the rock we didn't need to do anything else. The non Michigan fans will look at it and say at the beginning of that game your tackle was getting whipped and ended up having to adjust to negate the pass rush and offensive lineman and just start running the ball. Also if Franklin makes some different coaching choices like kicking FGs instead of going for 2 maybe it adds a little anxiety to the Interim head coach. Credit Michigan's defense for playing well Penn states offense can put up some points going back looking at their past games. But if Penn state had a heartbeat on offense during that game I think the sentiments would be different. Good Job though to Michigan they earned a W.

If UGA loses to Bama, simply because Bama is ranked 7 or 8 then UGA will have to fall behind Bama and will be out because Bama won't be allowed to leapfrog over Texas and no amount of facts will convince the press that Wash and Oregon are severely overrated.

Head coach being on the sideline during a game isn't a big deal truly. The Coordinators run the game plan for most teams anyway. The real punishment would have been to Suspend Jim from being a part of the practices for the remaining of the regular season. I mean this suspension was just a slap on the wrists by the Big10 to try and appease people, while actually not harming Michigan in anyway possible. Player's win games, not Head coaches. Harbaugh had already created a game plan throughout everyday of the week leading up to Saturday, people are making this into a big deal just so they can give Michigan the coodos for overcoming this adversity and keep them in the top 4 even if OSU beats them.

Thanks, Joel. Penn State sacrificed their offensive coordinator. This isn't the primary issue. Franklin's conservative coaching strategy "of not losing a game" delivers many annual wins (9-10+).
It also feels like Franklin doesn't want to lose his top-ten job at Penn State. His primary goal is not to win a national championship.
Most "ignorant " fans believe that every NCAA football coach has to win a national championship as their primary goal, which is invalid!
Many coaches want to keep a seven-figure income doing a job they love. Coaching football at this level is a dream come true.
James Franklin is an excellent coach who has attained his career and life goals. Sorry, Penn State fans, there is no congruence between your and your head coach's primary goal.

Paterno had five undefeated seasons had two national championships. His teams won twenty-four of thirty-seven bowl games. The winningest coach of all time, 409 wins. He coach in an Era when the championship was was decided by sports writers who vote according to their biased and what region of the country they were from... this was arguably a "mythical national championship". Penn State was passed for a nation championship over three times in spite of undefeated seasons and victories on major bowl games. Joe wanted to "settle the championship of field" like all other NCAA college sports. Joe was the a symbol of having a playoff system.
Joe Paterno and Penn State's getting passed over was a reason the NCAA needed to go to an on the field playoff system, because there was no playoff system. Joe Paterno was influential advocate for the playoffs, which is still evolving, next year it will finally have 12 teams.
Further more Joe saw himself as an educator preparing his players for life, by building character as well a college education, graduating the highest percentage of his player.

Only thing I have to criticize is Michigan’s schedule is not just as good or better than Georgia’s. They have one ranked win. It was a top ten win, but Georgia just routed a team rated one spot higher than Penn State. They also have two other ranked wins and if they handle Tennessee in Knoxville, that will be their fourth ranked win with top ten Alabama waiting in Atlanta. Outside of the PAC 12, no other team can say that. Georgia should be #1, they are ascending and are back to back defending champs. Even with taking the “each year is a new year, last year doesn’t matter” approach they should still be #1. That’s just my humble opinion.

Sure OSU did it as well, but taking away Aller's ability to move the ball.
Additionally, UM ran on PSU even when they sold-out on the run. However, I do believe they could have ran play action off the 7man front.
They could come underneath the safeties knowing the LBs are sold. Edwards has proven he could make catches out of the backfield.
In reality though, with PSU, Aller couldn't handle it.
On the flipside, JJ doesn't care how they win. Corum doesn't care how they win.
The difference is that Michigan brought with them what travels.
The scary part is that if you don find a way to shut down their passing game, they flip it up on you, and you're going to have to change your entire scheme to shut them.

The 'sportsmanship clause' you referenced distinguishes between the individual and the institution for 'offensive conduct.' The Big Ten explicitly said they had no evidence Harbaugh was involved in advanced scouting (yes, we're talking about scouting even though they referred to it as a stealing scheme). They also said the penalty was against the institution, not Harbaugh. A sentence later they said Harbaugh is the institution when we're talking football. That's simply the Big playing both sides of the legal argument and an egregious abuse of a bylaw to penalize an individual under the guise of penalizing an institution.
Football at Michigan is not an independent entity. Harbaugh is an employee. The AD is his direct boss, and it goes up from there. And he can be disciplined by the institution, which is the University of Michigan. Why not suspend the AD or the president or the Board of Trustees? If the Big considered all head coaches of specific sports as the institution for the purposes of disciplinary action under their sportsmanship clause, then they would have stated as such in their bylaws. They didn't because it's absurd. No university allows dozens of sports institutions to simultaneously and independently operate. Instead they distinguished individuals FROM the institution. They are just making it up as they go along and acted with malice with their timing.
"We impose this disciplinary action even though the Conference has not yet received any information indicating that Head Football Coach Harbaugh was aware of the impermissible nature of the sign-stealing scheme. This is not a sanction of Coach Harbaugh. It is a sanction against the University that, under the extraordinary circumstances presented by this offensive conduct, best fits the violation because: (1) it preserves the ability of the student-athletes to continue competing; and (2) it recognizes that the Head coach embodies the University for purposes of its football program."

Michigan takes care of the careers of their people with talent. Harbaugh has set up OC Sherrone Moore for a top Head Coach position somewhere. And the Offensive Line players have been showcased in the Penn State game which sets them up for the best opportunities in the NFL draft. UM goes out of their way to develop the potential of their players and their coaches … and to showcase that talent in a way that focuses national attention on those players. The ideal path forward for all who commit to Michigan. And the icing on the cake is life long respect from the huge fan base & alumni Nation wide.
The tragedy of players committing to the wrong team is not being given the support to fully develop their strengths, plus being overlooked because they weren’t noticed on the national stage.

My thoughts on the timing of the suspension, it affects the competitiveness of the game by knocked the wind out of the players and other coaches, which the decision making nowadays is supposed to lean more towards punishing Universities and their programs, not the players themselves. But, more importantly, I feel that it really makes the decision seem vindictive, and resentful. The talk was already that the BIG10 was "out to get Jim Harbaugh, and Michigan", but now the timing of the decision solidifies it for a lot of people.

Disagree...michigan asked for an extension that drug it into Friday. I'm sick of the whining about Michigan's student athletes somehow getting punished. The facts are in at least from the NCAA...enough to convince the B1G commish to act. Remember he said he'd have to see something obvious before making a decision on this...irrefutable evidence. They don't belong in CFP contention at this point...what about the student athletes they leveraged an unfair advantage on? What about a Washington or a FSU that may be left on the table if Michigan runs the table. They cheated this YEAR! You're going to tell "pick your undefeated" that we went with the cheaters up north instead if you. It's Michigan's bed They sleep in it and the players are collateral damage sorry....because two wrongs don't make a right....Washington or FSU or whoever shouldn't be collateral damage for Michigan's choices. A couple of points to make here. First, there's no definitive proof yet that Stalions engaged in in-person advanced scouting. Paying others to do it is not expressly forbidden in the NCAA or B1G bylaws for scouting. Michigan is not arguing this point, I am. Second, There is no proof that Harbaugh knew about Stalion's activities and both the NCAA and the B1G have both said as much. The NCAA has a coach's responsibility clause but the B1G does not. The B1G has a sportsmanship rule that has historically been applied to coaches or players for conduct deemed detrimental either during contests or in the aftermath of contests. Suspending Harbaugh under the sportsmanship rule sets a bad precedent that the B1G commissioner can now suspend any coach or athletic personnel for any reason without the need for any checks or balances from the other member institutions. That is way too much power for one person to wield over all the athletic personnel employed by 14, soon to be 18, universities and was never the intent of the sportsmanship rule.
