When you grabbed the entire stack of Field Notes, I thought to myself, well he's not worried about dropping them because it would just give him an excuse to shuffle through the whole stack again.
Well Lukas, I don't know if Field Notes has a sponsorship program, or even recognition for directing new customers their way but should they ever, you may certainly use me as a testimonial! I never knew how much I needed FN in my life until I saw your video that demonstrated the practicality, utility, and (especially) the aesthetic benefits of using them. The funniest thing is, I wasn't even *looking* for FN when I encountered your video; I was researching Blackwing pencils, LOL! Your pencil video turned me on to FN, which I had never known about before. So truly, I am now a FN user because of YOU! My first pack was the National Parks, pack C. Cheers! And thank you!
Immediately went to the bookshop and grabbed a set of Fieldnotes books after watching this. Besides the size being a little better-suited to my pockets than the pocket journal I currently carry, I really appreciated you highlighting that the way the softcovers wear over time is satisfying rather than impractical. You sold me completely!
my favorite part of this video is the way you articulated the tactile satisfaction and joy of writing on paper. i experience the same thing but have a slightly different method. being a woman (i see another commenter mentioned this), i don't always have pockets, and the fact of the mere inconsistency of pockets across outfits is enough that i've never been able to sustain a pocket notebook habit, even though i love field notes and, as you call it, the chicken scratch aesthetic. but on the other hand, i always carry a big-ass bag with me everywhere and so my go-to notebook is the rhodia A4 top spiral, which is huge, and my greatest satisfaction comes from filling pages top to bottom (and sideways, upside down, etc). which is all to say, it's interesting to see all the different ways that that an unconscious notebook habit can be developed. great video, thanks for sharing!
I am so excited to see you mentioned in the Staple Day newsletter today, Lukas! What an honor. It’s been a long time coming for such a loyal patron. Cheers! 🎉
Halfway through the video I realized I'm the same way. I bought some 3-packs of cheap no-brand notebooks about the same size as the Field Notes years ago, and I finished 8 of them within two weeks; scribbles, notes, reminders, life drawings and so on. I didn't think much of it at the time, I was maybe a little ashamed that they weren't beautiful pieces of art like the sketchbooks and notebooks I'd seen online, but you're exactly right. They were small enough to pick up at any time and fit into any pocket I had when I went outside, and I used them constantly. That's much more valuable than the bigger, more expensive sketchbook options I had; the better paper didn't make a difference if I wasn't using it in my day to day. Most of the Field Notes are sold out where I live, but I found the Streetscape Sketchbook ones on an online store and bought them immediately. Field Notes, y'all gotta hire this guy. Give him money. I was sold by his sales pitch.
Wonderful love letter! Congrats on your decade-plus of FieldNotebooking! I, too, am a long-time FN user who appreciates the short time between having the thought and the satisfaction of recording it in the book -- much less time than using a phone app or some such. I hadn't thought much about the wearing-in esthetic, but now I feel like I may have a greater appreciation for it. Thank you!
I'm happy that YT recommended this video, you have a beautiful way of talking about these notebooks. I haven't heard of this brand so much in Japan but I will keep your video in mind next time I go out to stationery stores here. Thanks for sharing your 10-year collection!
I have been using Field Notes for a while now, and happened upon your channel researching old editions… I have to say, you are without a doubt the #1 ambassador I have come across for them… and maybe for pocket notebooks, too.
Just watched this and honestly, loaded up Fields Notes’ website so I can figure out what I want to order! I’m about to start journaling very regularly and I love the idea of this being a sidekick to my larger planner/journal. Also, I’ll be using mine as a coaster as well, I love the character it added to yours. 😊 Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! And I’m pleased you’re starting the FN journey! If you do buy from the website make sure you use code BLANKFIRSTPAGE to get 10% off.
I really enjoy your Field Notes videos even though they’re not the notebook for me. The ‘simpler’ editions are my favorite as well. My Shenandoah set will always have a special place in my heart.
I enjoy seeing your collection every time you show it. I’m a big fan of the letterpress series. I love the designs of these covers. You inspired me to greatly expand my usage of them and to subscribe to their quarterly series.
@@BlankFirstPage @CinkSVideo My prior notebook was one from the letterpress series and I agree with u, very cool! They actually have a deal right now where u can get 3 packs for the price of 2, so if u need more, go hop on that. U get one pack from each series and only pay for 2 of them....great deal!
As a lover of stationery, what an accomplishment! 🥳 I’ve never used Field Notes, but plan on purchasing a set. I love the notebooks that look loved and used. My notes look like chicken scratches too and I prefer it that way. I highly recommend reaching out to Field Notes. You have a great platform for free marketing for them on your TH-cam channel and you’ve personally used 100 of their notebooks. I enjoyed your video! TFS! 🤗
🎉Congratulations on being mentioned in the latest Staple Day newsletter! I have also been a long time user of Field Notes, just not as organized as you. Great strategy on the wearing in process. I think I’ll try it. Thanks for sharing!
Not just a pack, your videos inspired me to start the habit, I’m a year in now and it was the best habit I ever started. ✨ thanks for sharing your experiences.
You definitely inspired me to start using Field Notes. I have been using them since October of 2023 and am in my 4th and 5th FN and own 19 of them. I am looking forward to continuing my collection! Thank you for the inspiration.
This is THAT video that inspired me to finally get some for myself, I always saw them at this local shop for a few years now but never thought about them too much. I am now 2 months into this hobby and on my 4th FN, I’ve got a whole collection of them now. I was also lucky enough to acquire the National Crop edition, an edition I thought I would never have. I am a big fan of your channel! Thanks Lukas!
Fantastic! Glad you’ve started the FN journey, and so good that you managed to get the national crop edition - one of the all time favorites. Thanks for watching!
I, too, have been doing notebooks for years but all are different notebooks so I will order this and start with same size. Must be small like you show to carry with all day - that’s when the thoughts pop up ! Thank you ! Glad I found you !
I started my own Field Notes collection because of you! I loved how the yellow showed through that one purple National Parks notebook you were showing off the wear on (the one with the smoke plume)
I have been using field notes for years, and I have been thinking about switching things up. After watching this video you have renewed my appreciation for field notes and I will be purchasing more. Thank you for this video. I thoroughly enjoyed it
i just recently hit ten years of journalling as well! this makes me want to start a pocket notebook as well, they seem so satisfying and really useful! i am really forgetful so it's nice to have something like that. plus i think it would help me get off my phone. great video, really cool collection!
I bought the national parks and the letterpress ones because of you! I'm still planning to get more. For now I'm just hoarding because i still have a backlog of notebooks to go through lol. I do hope field notes considers you, i can see your passion for the notebook in every video and it's infectious! 💖 Excited for more 🥳
Great video! I've been using pocket notebooks for a while now but haven't found a brand that I would enjoy writing in. Just ordered a pack of field notes while watching your video, hopefully these would be the ones💪
I am a subscriber to their quarterly series and once in awhile on a Wednesday special I will buy something to get the freebie. The last one was a free Valentines love book and pencil with any purchase so I got myself a three pack of blank kraft. I have a tendency to hoard the pretty ones so the blank kraft are not so precious. One immediately got used to sort through a lot of childhood anger and has turned out to be such a love letter to myself. It is perfectly broken in, sloppy, well used and marked up along with photos and collage, wet markers, scribbles, tape etc. I sometimes just look through it and can't believe I made something so healing. I would like to thank the YT algorhythm gods for putting your video in my suggested videos. I have in the past searched for Field Notes junkies and all I seem to get is pretty journalers of which I am not.
You got me into Field Notes. The way you talked about them as a thing designed to be used and your various other videos got me excited about them. I tried out the Great Lakes series and it definitely confirmed for me a lot of why you love them!
In case you guys want this notebook but are on a budget or u want a cheaper alternative, dollar tree has mini composition books that are in packs of 2 or 3!
Well … I bought. I’ve been considering these for a while but hadn’t pushed the button due to an excessive amount of notebooks. I think your system might just be what I’m searching for. Great video!
I am guilty of buying a couple packs of Field Notes a few months ago, after watching your videos. I even shared a couple of them with my husband. They’re almost too nice to use! I hope you get a sponsorship soon!
I have very much enjoyed watching ur journey with Field Notes over the last year and look forward to another year of these thoughtful and relaxing videos. I love the collection videos, especially the whole set from 1-100 here. I think it might be equally interesting to see the following (if u are looking for future video ideas): 1) a collection video like this one, but of your unused notebooks 2) some sort of showdown or bracket challenge of the different sets that are not the kraft covers (since we know the kraft would win, lol)
Your videos have made me very much appreciate the versatility and simple joys of using a pocket notebook 😊 I got inspired and bought the newest pack out of Field Notes (the Heartland pack) and also the Birch pack. They are so lovely and I love the paper inside, it's really a treat to sketch on (I fill mine with little poems and quotes and lots of sketches) 😊😊
When I look back on my past notebooks, I enjoy seeing the memories ... and chicken scratch and quick lists, etc. Can spark up other memories ... it is like a little diary, I have found. 😊
Yep you’ve got me hooked on Field Notes! I’ve even started tracking finances the way you showed in a previous video for more consciousness of spending habits. I use YNAB also but the act of physically writing it down makes it feel more real than just plugging it into an app and I think that has started to help me make better decisions with my money. Thanks for the videos and the inspiration!
You inspired me to purchase a pack of Field Notes :) This was a lovely love letter and it was great to see your collection. I really liked the different art across different Field Notes. I just received it a few days ago and I love it. I will use it for a specific thing and surprisingly I kind of like the fact it only has 48 pages... This is out of character for me because I like notebooks with lots of pages. I just wish they were cheaper 😅
Love the FN notebooks! I’ve been using the national parks ones in my journal cover. It’s also nice to see other people’s FNs, they show lots of character I find.
This really made me want to buy a field note! I usually just use sticky notes to jot down random stuff, but I think I might like a field note better since it’s still small but it’s easier to keep all the notes together.
That's an awesome collection and there's something soothing about seeing them all laid out! I have the camping set and the yellow set. Currently have the lunar (?)/moon set untouched. Working my way through the silver set with the orange spine (don't know what to call that set so I'll just describe it). Great video❤
Got a 3 pack kraft version with graph paper yesterday, can’t stop using it and it’s already 1/4 way through! I love how it feels and appreciate its design watching this video. 😅
What I love more than I can possibly tell you about this is that most TH-cam videos about notebooks are just fetish videos for people who just want to turn a note book into a personal work of art rather than actually just taking notes. I love your chicken scratches... And the fact there are blank pages etc
I have a journalling habit already - but this has encouraged me to go out and try field notes for my next set of journals :D I'm so excited to see how they change/expand my process! (p.s. your genuine excitement and joy about these notebooks is so lovely to watch, as a fellow notebook-obsessed human haha)
I’ve got a small collection after watching your videos and am half way through my first one. I also have a small collection of Blackwing pencils because of your videos.
Hey you got a call out in the Staple Day email dispatch! Well deserved. Your videos got me to finally take the plunge into Field Notes so…. If they are watching you definitely deserve from swag from FNB.
Here I am listening to a video about how he loves to wear down his Field Notes instead of how he organized his notes. And what’s amazing I stayed through the whole video!
Hi from New Zealand. I have recently discovered your channel as i love to journal in a variety of notebooks and this year have started using pocket sized notebooks. I'm interested to learn about field notes. Unfortunately they aren't sold here. It was so interesting to hear your thoughts on the wearing in of your field notes. I have been a bit precious about my notebooks and haven't liked any wearing in effect on them but after listening to you talk about them wearing in, i'm now seeing what i once thought was 'damage' in a whole new way.
I lived in NZ for just over 2 years and I would buy them directly from the field notes website. Expensive shipping but I had trouble finding them anywhere else.
I'm interested in your personal opinion of lines vs grid/graph/blank. I am using a lined FN now and not enjoying the format so I started carrying around my "next up" August book already. I didn't consider that I could "wear it in" ahead of starting to use it. It made me feel clever and validated to see you carry a book ahead and give an actual reason for it!
I bought my first set a couple weeks ago, it was a previous set (the Birch Bark set) and I just pulled the trigger on the entire national parks set, plus the Hartland set. I just bought them today after the new Flora set dropped. Which, tbh, I'm not a fan of. I'd prefer they all be the same kind of paper type. I might change my mind later, but for now, I'm set with what I've got. Plus, I've got the materials to make my own DIY notebooks.
@BlankFirstPage I bought them while I was still using another notebook that I had made. So im just about to officially start my first of the field notes. The birch- bark all have a simple off-white cover that I thought was beautiful because of its simplicity. The three in the set have green, yellow, and black gridlines that are reminiscent of the leaves that go from green to yellow in the fall and to black in the winter.
I just came across your program. I will now be binge watching. 😂. 2 questions. Where do you buy yours that they are different. When you find the one you like can’t you continue to get that same one. I know I am showing how little I know about them. I do have a set that I will start using now. And my other question which is I know the answer to, do you put them in any short of cover? A leather cover? I bought one for mine and was looking forward to the cover breaking in. I really enjoy listening to this and I’ll see if I can put in a good word with FN for you. 😂😂
I have bought them all over - they've got an online store which is good if you're in the US (fieldnotesbrand.com). Otherwise in the rest of the world there's a selection of online retailers that carry them - I've bought both directly and from retailers. Most of the ones I have are from their seasonal editions which they only make a limited run for. I have stocked up sometimes on the ones I really love, but I also like the variety. And I have no cover for them - I like them to crack and crackle with use :) Thanks so much for watching!
You got me hooked and I have spent my entire savings on them. Where do you carry them? I put mine in my back pocket. Big mistake. Same for the pen. It bends and they are so beautiful I don't want to damage it.
Recently, I lost my USB drive with my whole Obsidian vault stored on it. I watched your videos and purchased two packs of Field Notes kind of impulsively. It's only been maybe three weeks and I've already finished two Field Notes. I can't stop writing in them! Thanks so much for your videos.
I have the most random things in my pocket notebooks. Like i have proper notebook dedicated to proper things. But my pocket notebooks goes from things i want to remember to do to a drawing of something random - an important note to that is that i cannot draw.
This is how I feel about my Midori (Travelers Notebook) inserts. I am trying out field notes as an alternative. The only concern I have is I use a fountain pen so how does the paper work with that ink?
Awesome video! May I ask if you use webshops to buy your Field Notes, and if so, which ones? I am also in Europe, and I struggle to find them available. Thank you!
What's the value of keeping all those todo lists that have been already done? I genuinely ask cause I've been struggling to find a pocket book useful. For the most part I have a few notebooks around my house and I write what I need to do, I come back to it during the day or week depending on the task and then I forget about it to the point that I later rip the page off cause it bothers me. Even when taking notes I tend to the put them either on the computer or pass them onto a cleaner notebook where the info is relevant. I'd love to hear some opinions about this
I just enjoy the look and feel of old, used notebooks. The info in them is almost irrelevant- although I do find looking back through old to do lists and random notes is a bit like looking through a photo album.
Does your OCD not get bugged by the fact that you go from Dot - to - graph -to - plain - to - lined - etc;? (btw, I've bought Field Notes because of you!)
I may have missed this, but did you get all of these through subscription or did you purchase these varieties as they came out and as you saw ones you wanted?
Hello lucas👋 i watched your stationary collection video from when you moved and heard that you could use some extra video ideas. One was any specific notebooks that needed to be addressed. So as an official request can you do a video for the notebook with a dark brown leather cover, brown-ish paper-not lined, and it was one of the last notebooks you showed in the 1st collection video. Please?🙏
I do not - I rely entirely on my questionable ability to remember where I was when I wrote something and to roughly know when that was. Then I can use the dates on the inside of the notebooks to narrow it down. Just gives me an excuse to leaf through my notebooks searching for things.
I am DESPERATE to be content and consistent about ANYTHING as much as this guy is about Field Notes 😂😭
When you grabbed the entire stack of Field Notes, I thought to myself, well he's not worried about dropping them because it would just give him an excuse to shuffle through the whole stack again.
Truth! Any excuse to shuffle through FN :)
Arghhhh 😮que hermoso ver tantas libretas, me emociona ver tantas. Amo escribir también pero en mis journals😊saludos Desde Argentina
I love to flip through my old notebooks and I never thought about them in the same way as one thinks about their photo reels. Great Analogy!
Thanks for watching!

I have very much enjoyed watching ur journey with Field Notes over the last year and look forward to another year of these thoughtful and relaxing videos.
I love the collection videos, especially the whole set from 1-100 here. I think it might be equally interesting to see the following (if u are looking for future video ideas):
1) a collection video like this one, but of your unused notebooks
2) some sort of showdown or bracket challenge of the different sets that are not the kraft covers (since we know the kraft would win, lol)
Love the ideas, especially the bracket challenge. Thanks for watching!
@@BlankFirstPage U are welcome, enjoying the ride!
Nice! I haven’t got my hands on the Heartland pack yet but keen to try. Thanks for watching!
When I look back on my past notebooks, I enjoy seeing the memories ... and chicken scratch and quick lists, etc. Can spark up other memories ... it is like a little diary, I have found. 😊
Exactly!
Just ordered a pack of the plain brown ones because of this video!
Nice! I hope you enjoy them!
So cool! I'm pleased you've found use from the finance tracking system and sounds like you're enjoying the Field Notes life. Thanks for watching!
I would hug them all 😍
I regularly do!
Glad you’re enjoying it! Always good to have a different form factor to what you’re used to. Thanks for watching!
Love the FN notebooks! I’ve been using the national parks ones in my journal cover. It’s also nice to see other people’s FNs, they show lots of character I find.
The National Parks editions are a gem! Thanks for watching!
This really made me want to buy a field note! I usually just use sticky notes to jot down random stuff, but I think I might like a field note better since it’s still small but it’s easier to keep all the notes together.
Hope you get yourself a set! Thanks for watching!
awesome collection!
Thanks for watching!
That's an awesome collection and there's something soothing about seeing them all laid out! I have the camping set and the yellow set. Currently have the lunar (?)/moon set untouched. Working my way through the silver set with the orange spine (don't know what to call that set so I'll just describe it). Great video❤
Thanks for watching!
Got a 3 pack kraft version with graph paper yesterday, can’t stop using it and it’s already 1/4 way through! I love how it feels and appreciate its design watching this video. 😅
Thank you for watching!
That's an impressive stack of notebooks. I aspire to be like this in the future.
Thanks for watching!
What I love more than I can possibly tell you about this is that most TH-cam videos about notebooks are just fetish videos for people who just want to turn a note book into a personal work of art rather than actually just taking notes. I love your chicken scratches... And the fact there are blank pages etc
Thank you very much for your comment, that was exactly my reason for starting this channel! Thanks for watching!
Thoroughly enjoyable video!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you! This is wonderful!!
Thank you for watching!
I have a journalling habit already - but this has encouraged me to go out and try field notes for my next set of journals :D I'm so excited to see how they change/expand my process! (p.s. your genuine excitement and joy about these notebooks is so lovely to watch, as a fellow notebook-obsessed human haha)
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy the foray into pocket notebooks!
I’ve got a small collection after watching your videos and am half way through my first one. I also have a small collection of Blackwing pencils because of your videos.
Excellent! I hope you are enjoying the notebooks and pencils. Great combo! Thanks for watching
Hey you got a call out in the Staple Day email dispatch! Well deserved. Your videos got me to finally take the plunge into Field Notes so…. If they are watching you definitely deserve from swag from FNB.
I'm glad you're on the FN train! I saw the mention, true honour - and thanks to your support!
Brilliant! 😍
Thank you for watching!
Here I am listening to a video about how he loves to wear down his Field Notes instead of how he organized his notes. And what’s amazing I stayed through the whole video!
Thanks for making it through!
That's awesome! I recently started using field notes and I think Ill be gathering a collection soon hehe I even made custom stickers for it 😊
Nice! You'll gather a collection without even thinking about it.
Looking forward to the "twenty years" video!
Me too!
Wow! That's so pretty. 🤩
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
you're a great storyteller
That’s very kind, thanks for watching!
Mrs Blackwells in Greytown (and online) has some in her store
Mrs Blackwells in Greytown has them 😊
I lived in NZ for just over 2 years and I would buy them directly from the field notes website. Expensive shipping but I had trouble finding them anywhere else.
I am using mine for finances. I am so glad I saw that video, keep up the good ideas!
Nice! Thanks for watching!
I go Dot grid as the first preference, then graph. I’m with you on the lines, doesn’t feel right! Thanks for watching!
I loved this video! So cool to see your collection! I'm curious about the End Papers edition. What did you use those for, if you don't mind sharing?
You’ve inspired me to buy a pack. Really interesting video thank you.
Nice, I hope you enjoy them!
How is the Birch Bark set? I've got the others that you mention and really enjoy them. DIY notebooks are also great!
And I have no cover for them - I like them to crack and crackle with use :) Thanks so much for watching!
this guy's obsession is amazing, i might be becoming addicted to his addiction.
Thanks for watching!
Field note should reward your passion for them somehow you deserve it
I feel the same way! Thanks for watching!
This is magical. I just bought my first pack.
Excellent, I hope you enjoy!
Hey Field Notes mentioned you in their latest newsletter!
I saw that! Best day ever! Thanks for the support!
Thank you!
Damn, all those journals must have cost close to $500 altogether. Just one on Amazon is $8. That's dedication and I have to respect it.
Thanks for watching!
You can make your own for very very cheap. ~ 50 cents per book
You got me hooked and I have spent my entire savings on them. Where do you carry them? I put mine in my back pocket. Big mistake. Same for the pen. It bends and they are so beautiful I don't want to damage it.
I do keep them in my back or front pockets. For me it’s all about the bending and the wear of the notebooks, they become personalized that way.
Sorry you lost the drive but glad the silver lining is you’re using pocket notebooks! Thank you for watching!
Always have 3 backups. One cloud, other local, one in a hard disk :D
Last year I bought several packs for gifts. I opened them all up and mixed & matched so everyone would have a variety. (Including me!)
Great idea, I love that!
I have the most random things in my pocket notebooks.
Like i have proper notebook dedicated to proper things. But my pocket notebooks goes from things i want to remember to do to a drawing of something random - an important note to that is that i cannot draw.
You describe the best kind of pocket notebook!
This is how I feel about my Midori (Travelers Notebook) inserts. I am trying out field notes as an alternative. The only concern I have is I use a fountain pen so how does the paper work with that ink?
It works well - it’s not necessarily the typical ‘fountain pen friendly’ paper, it does feather a bit but still very serviceable!
Awesome video! May I ask if you use webshops to buy your Field Notes, and if so, which ones? I am also in Europe, and I struggle to find them available. Thank you!
I have used a site called escribo.pl - they always get the new editions too!
Strangely enough, no. However I have a definite preference for Dot, lined being by least favourite. Thanks for watching!
I may have missed this, but did you get all of these through subscription or did you purchase these varieties as they came out and as you saw ones you wanted?
I only had a sub for one year, all the others I bought as and when - I picked the ones I liked (aka most of them)!
Please?🙏
I've noted that down, and I'll hope to make a video about that notebook, maybe a few of my leather covered notebooks together. Thanks for watching!
@@BlankFirstPage ☺️thank you
Do you have a system of indexing, so you know where to find things ?
I do not - I rely entirely on my questionable ability to remember where I was when I wrote something and to roughly know when that was. Then I can use the dates on the inside of the notebooks to narrow it down. Just gives me an excuse to leaf through my notebooks searching for things.
About how many days do you get out of a notebook?
Usually 4-6 weeks!
7 months in on book five. I have a long way to go. 👍
Nice! It’s a journey that’s great every step of the way, enjoy! And thanks for watching!
I’m stealing your “pre-ware” technique.
Nice! I hope you enjoy it, thanks for watching!
