- Hey guys, I made this video to inform you (and hopefully TH-cam) about how Epidemic Sound is waiting for videos to reach a certain number of views before they claim their content.
Not only is this unethical, but it is abuse of TH-cam's content claiming system and should not be allowed. Be sure you like and share this video so it gets seen by as many creators as possible.
Be sure to double check the songs you use in your videos are not from this company or they will wait until you are at a certain number of views before they file their claim on the video.

I don’t get it. You got problems because you used their music but didn’t pay for a subscription? But if you pay for the subscription it’s fine? Seems legit you have to pay for it, or did I miss something?
If you can listen to it, you should be able to use it. Epidemic sound is doing nothing but using the right of exclusion to get creators to subscribe to their service, which also makes them dependent on it. It‘s a predatory arrangement.

My experience as a music channel:
Some years ago I bought their license and started to began uploading tracks from Epidemic Sound on TH-cam. At this time "Standalone" uploads weren't mentioned as forbidden in their usage rules. But some time later they added the rule "Standalone uploads aren't allowed".
Principally okay and at least they contacted me some weeks before they claimed the videos. But they claimed many of my older videos with many views instead of just claiming the newer ones, since the new rule exists.
I accepted it anyway because their license never explicitly allowed standalone uploads and I made a lot of views with their music before the claim. It was naive to think you can reupload their music with "just" paying 12 euros a month.
Apart from that I had good experiences with Epidemic Sound. New subscriptions are much clearer to understand. They removed the claims from my second channel, after I bought a license. Some months later (2020) I removed the subscription for the second channel and until now they haven't claimed any of my videos from the this channel, just as they promised.
Also they now claim videos immediately, if they contain their music without a license. At least from my experience. Probably sometimes the content ID system cannot identify Epidemics music, if there are too much background noises in the video.
exact same problem i had. this site is a scam. I dont know how there isnt a class action lawsuit against them
4 views on mine and I got claimed by them lol only 30 seconds, so i just clipped the sound out.
In my experience as well, I had a personal subscription with Epidemic Sound. Almost a year of my subsciption and gaining more views on my videos, they had started claiming rights to music I've used. Now, I want to delete all my lyric videos and start from a scratch. I already terminated my subscription with them because I think they are not fair.

You are totally right..i was on music videos for their underrated artists to be promoted..but they wont allow stand alone contents like lyric video and music video.such a shame..so greedy.i also unsubscribed from them..
If you’re using a personal account then yeah, you’re not allowed to do that. That’s what the commercial license is for.

I found myself in a very similar situation with Epidemic Sound, and your video is great. However, since I believe I understand the T&C, I'll briefly describe it here, but if anyone thinks I'm mistaken, please let me know. The music/sound effects found on Epidemic Sound can only be used, downloaded, and added to your TH-cam channel (which, in the personal plan, can only have 1 channel) if you have an active subscription at the time you publish your video. In the case of the more expensive plan, you can add your music to a maximum of 3 channels. If you happen to have 4-6 channels, or 6+ channels, etc., you would need to purchase 2 or 3 separate subscriptions to use their music/sound effects. Also, if I understand the T&C correctly, you don't have to keep your plan active indefinitely to prevent them from claiming copyright; it only needs to be active when you upload something. So, for those who want to save money, it's possible to cancel intermittently, but you can only gain a few days or weeks per year with this strategy, not to mention that the annual plan offers a discount.
Another thing someone mentioned is that music uploaded as standalone tracks is an exception, but many channels, like relaxation music channels, only upload a gif/picture along with their music, and that doesn't seem to be a problem. Does this not qualify as standalone in such cases?

@@mortonmedia I resolved the issue by paying a subscription, they instantly cleared the issue. Just email them (epidemic sound) about the claim they'll advise you. And by the way they are responsive

I totally agree thats so shady.. I think there should be a 30 day copyright claim period and if there are no claims on the song used after 30 days then no claim should be issued on that song after the fact if you have used it in your video.. Im still looking for a great place too download music for videos, If anyone knows of a good place please let me know.. I was using TH-cam free music but its all bad and they don't update the music very often.. Thanks for letting us know about this because I almost signed up for Epidemic Sound..

We have a subscription to Epidemic sound and we just had a claim filled as they now sold the license to this song to an anime movie but left it up for us to download
Epidemic sound is how I found out royalty free doesn't necessarily mean completely free. They scammed me in the exact same way. Twice.

Wait, isn't Epidemic Sounds a library of sounds you can use without worrying about copyrights? If not, whats the point of joining it?
if you get the subscription or whatever they are not allowed to copyright a video that was posted when you had the licence, so if you have a licence they are not allowed to copyright it, if you HAD a licence and you didnt pay the monthly licence and you upload a video with a song on it will get copyright but your old videos shouldnt get copyrighted, i think there may have been some error or maybe the guy didnt pay in time, or maybe he paid it after he uploaded the video, but still one year is crazy
They are dead to me. Epidemic sound will go out of business if I have anything to do with it.

I have been using Epidemic since I started. However, lately I am getting the claim alerts. This shouldn’t be the case if I pay for the membership. I’m cancelling my membership.

I just bought a 1 year sub and just a few days later got 63 copyright claims on one video. I messaged support, explained what happened with 20 screen shots and they just sent a canned reply telling me to buy subscription. I replied again sending the info again with my subscription info and a week later, they sent me the same canned response they sent me the first time telling me to buy again what I've already bought. Nice... I'm have a degree in film production, so I know a bit about copyright. I showed my bank the exchange and was able to get a refund

The same is happening to me. I paid Epimemic Sound's license for 1 year and now they've given me copright on my videos. Why only after 1 year??? What about the copyright license I keep paying? I am very disappointed with this company.
To be honest you need to check their license FAQ. They write that Standalone uploads aren't allowed. I had to accept this too some years ago.

Thank you for sharing, I’m sorry that happened to you. I’m a small TH-camr under 1K and I got about 30 copyright strikes from them. I didn’t receive a email from epidemic sound tho. I had commented on someone’s video about the app that I was using and right after that I started getting copyrighted and my videos had maybe 20 views. I was paying for the Splice App for the music. I had researched it and I found out that I could use the music on TH-cam. Since it wasn’t recordings of myself talking I chose to replace the music with TH-cam free music, I’ve worked on my TH-cam Channel for over 4 years and almost deleted my channel because I was so upset. I didn’t try to fight it because I’m a small TH-camr. Today I caved and sign with them because I really want to add music to my songs and I don’t want to get copyrighted. I do have a video that has gone viral, over 108K views and the music is from iMovie. 🙏 It’s really disappointing, but I really want my channel to grow.

It's 2022, so I believe that they've changed this somewhat... I've uploaded a song of them unintentionally yesterday and although it passed the monetization threshold, it got claimed like 10 minutes later...
I thought this was the case, but in reality it was because I didn’t have a subscription and played it in background (Musi) for free instead. It may do same regardless because some are allowed and others aren’t regardless of subscriptions. Luckily, no copyright strikes were received, just the videos getting demonetized. Here’s my story. In March 2021 I began using Musi for background music, some were actually copyright free such as some from the TH-cam library or ncs. The rest were from this, but I didn’t realize licenses were required to use this type of music. Then I used it for a few months throughout the spring and summer, and a few days ago, I was surprised what i saw, a Buttload of claims. Then today I found this and now know why.
Same, i cannot avoid copyroght tho. Most of the roblox game on roblox have epidemic sound music so i am prob gonna get copyrighted no matter what.
It's scary, because I also use epidemic music as background music 🥺 so it's not safe 😭

I specifically have Story Blocks and Epidemic and I dont know quite how but Epedemic seems to land more quality music even some that has been somewhat mainstream or I probably use a different company because a lot of them offer individual license when I use the music for future projects. In my personal experience with claims I did forget I was making videos for my other website which doesnt have the subscription and some music was claimed right away or couple weeks later thanks goodness not year later so the system has improved. Faster catches of copyright issues is how I was able to change the licence to my other youtube channel as right now content isnt being done on this channel at the moment.

@@AnthraxVX I am afraid Epidemic would flag me for using "their sounds" after my subscription expired. According to this it, sounds like I would need to have continuous subscription to avoid getting flagged.
I have encountered the same problem with Epidemic Sound. Although I recieve notifications from TH-cam immediately, all the videos with music I use from ES gets copyright notifications. I contacted the ES and asked if I upgrade to Commercial Use (although I have only one channel where I use it and don`t need to have more channels added to my subscription plan, but I was ready to pay more money just to be able to monetize the videos), they couldn`t give me a straight answer whether this will help or not. And honestly speaking, the music and songs on ES is not the best, to put it mildly. The selection is very small and everyone using the same music in their videos on TH-cam.

I agree with you! They said absolutely copyright free but not really true.
That's because they steal artist music and then claim it's theirs 100%, nothing they sell is there they steal it from artists like myself who are new upcoming artists and then they make money off of it and then they tell people that if you use our stuff without a description and a license you're committing copyright infringement but they're the ones coming in copyright infringement they don't actually have any artists like they claim they're stealing the music from actual artists and selling it and making money off of it which is illegal.

Epidemic Sound is looking for ways to do copyright claims even if you bought their subscription. They wait until you put in all the work to build up your channel then find a reason to claim all your hard work. Do your research on them!!!

thats why to me such services are scams and i will never use them. they use that as a means to steal revenue from creators. i will rather delete the entire damn video than to share revenue with them.

Are you putting the right credits in your description box & the sound link like your supposed to? And do you have a subscription with them? Those 2 things are very important, I did have a claim with them but it was quickly dismissed because all they have to do is check. Honestly claims shouldn’t happen in the first place but hey at least you can say you followed their directions.

I’ve already subscribed on Epidemic Sound. Wtf 😳 definitely is not fair. I spent like 2 days editing the video and I have 3 days to do it again. Been trying to have fun with YT videos just for fun. FInally found some that people watched. Small like 100 to 500 views. These guys claimed all 10 of my videos with over 100 views... Kind of turned me off of making YT videos at all. I dont have the time or knowledge to really understand how these guys can claim all my vidoes.... Ill just not make videos...
My experience: I received Content ID claim after more than two years since I uploaded the video. Still don't understand why it happened, because I'm a paid subscriber to Epidemic Sound. Their 'Stand-alone' criteria doesn't match in this case. What I did? I replaced their music. I don't want THEY monitize my work. Read carefully their polices: '...Epidemic Sound reserves all rights to minitize your content...bla, bla,bla...'

I just got copy written on my video. At the time of upload I had a subscription with epidemic sound but I then stopped. According to my understanding I have lifetime licence for all music I downloaded when my subscription was active. I'm so disappointed

That's because their music isn't copyright free they're stealing it from actual artists and selling it and claiming they own 100% rights to it and they don't.
Yeah, my most recent video has also been claimed by this company, even though it is a song that is completely copyright free (headbang highway 2, feel free to double check). The video has gotten like 700 views and they still decided to take it from me even after me spending the effort of making the video. Scummy company, greedy business and I hope youtube eventually does something about it, because your video was published in 2020, and as of today, november 1st 2023, it is still happening. Thank you for shining light on it.
Adding onto this, THEY DIDNT EVEN CLAIM THE RIGHT SONG. I used "headbang highway 2" and they claimed the video for "Never Get to Me". That's gotta be illegal in some way dude I swear..

Hey guy, you have a really cool background space. Kudos! It looks amazing! Thanks for the heads up and for sharing this struggle. My personal opinion though, technology really isn't advanced yet for them to figure out all infringement when it happens. The same copyright laws can protect your stuff too. But I can see where it would be really irritating to think you're sailing smoothly and then running into this. But I'm sorry this happened to you.
I recently used Epidemic sounds on one of my video thought it was cool. After I had posted my video on TH-cam. I got a copy right claimed. What's funny is when you download your video on TH-cam the system didn't picked up the copy right claimed until I had posted my video. This is crazy
Had the exact same experience. They even have a copyright claim on my channel trailer. Its insane. they wreaked havoc on my channel
I think you would not have any issue with them if you subscribe to their service or even use the trial to make your content and publish during this trial period. As I understand you uploaded your content without knowing that the sound belongs to them ? Or maybe they have bought the music rights and then they have clamined the sound content ?
I get claims within a couple days from them if i edit in some kind of messed way bc of connection or cache issues. I pay the 12 bucks a month. I use canva for so many things that im fine with it. For what I do its fine without having to pay for adobe premiere.
To be honest bro I think you misunderstood what really happened. If I’m wrong please correct me. But the big mistake is off your behalf from downloading music from the channel like you said, but what was overlooked is what these “royalty free channels” are not having as a disclaimer. Which is yes the music is royalty free, but just for them and the users may have to clear it with the producers. Like the company/ music producer can somehow down the line change from letting a channel promote their music for them for free At That Time BUT if their song gains traction or they register it with BMI or ASCAP then that could change. Which is probably what happened with you. I know because I’m actually registered with BMI. And with the year later response , you have to question the Artist. Because let’s just say you would’ve signed up with Epidemic sound, that’s a legal agreement made to protect you from those claims , and they broke the agreement. Then that’s illegal. Which they’re not going to do. Just be careful with these “Free Channels” , and read up on how royalty licensing work and I’ll think it’ll explain it a little bit better lol I hope I helped a little
Hey, thanks for taking the time to type your remarks. I didn't misunderstand what happened at all, and admitted to making a mistake by using the music. That also isn't the reason why I made the video or why I believe this company is abusing the claim system.
This company waits until you have a certain number of views on your video before they make a content claim in order to have more leverage for you to purchase their service. Waiting a year and a half to place a claim on music is quite ridiculous - when I can assure you they got a playmatch notification within the week of the video being posted.
The claim was made by Epidemic Sound, and has nothing to do with the artist as they have purchased the rights and simply pay a royalty to said artist. Epidemic Sound chooses to wait until your video surpasses 2k views (approx) before they place a claim on your video. In my case, it was a year and a half. Their action of doing this means they aren't trying to protect their music, but leverage you into purchasing their service in order to monetize your video.
The action of that is unethical.
Should they place a claim on videos in a timely manner, I have absolutely no problem with it - because it was my mistake of using content owned by them. But that isn't the argument I'm making.

I posted a little example video for my students in my 3D modeling class on my university account on my unmonetized channel. Epidemic stuck a link to their site in my comments. The frick'en video has 40 views! The rest of my comments are links and thanks to all the assets and tools I used in the animation. Epidemic does not own the music I used. The composer allows the music to be used free on TH-cam. I have a copyright claim but no strike and a green checkmark from YT. So how they hell do these creeps get to insert an ad in my comments!?
That's exactly the thing, they attempt to leverage you into signing up for their service by "protecting content". Luckily TH-cam recently introduced a beta feature to "remove song" when you get one of these claims. I was under the impression it trimmed out all audio entirely, but it will process and remove just the song as best as it can. Really handy tool to deal with claims by predatory companies like these.

For future reference not all songs that say they’re Royalty Free or Copyright Free stay that way. A song may be at the time, but that doesn’t mean that down the road it won’t get picked up by a company or label.
You’ll be better off using songs already licensed to TH-cam or just using the TH-cam library if you’re not interested in buying a license or paying a subscription to a company like Epidemic to use hundreds of their audios and music, they have really nice stuff honestly. They’re nut that shady, but you’re right waiting that long is bullshit.

Sadly. I came across this video because epidemic sound claimed a piece of music I made literally an hour ago. Something of my own creation...also to clarify, I'm not a member of epidemic sound. I've never been on their app or site or anything of the sort. so I didn't upload this music there. I just basically made it and threw it on a youtube short and was immediately claimed.
If you made it from scratch then just dispute it. Still super annoying though. TH-cam's claim system is so flawed simply because they don't want to be directly involved.
Omg!! I thought it was just me! My video went live today and immediately I got a copyright claim on music I used from epidemic sound. These are the same songs I use on all my videos but for some reason I got a claim today. And they're claiming almost my whole video. If I were to mute it, almost all the video will be muted! Even though these same songs are on my other videos and never had a claim. I canceled with epidemic sound and I was understanding from my research if you cancel, you can still use the music you downloaded, you just can't download additional music. Obviously that's not the case

Hello sir. Thank you for this video. I posted a video on my channel last night and it contained music from epidemic sound. My video only had 10 views and I got a copyright claim on it this morning. What do I do next?
I have 49 subscribers, my channel is not even monetized yet! I spent all day searching for holiday music for vlogmas. I found 3 songs from ES and NO copyright claims when I uploaded. The next day, about 10min after I made the video public, there was a copyright claim for all 3 songs!!!! One of the songs was even used for the intro on AllyiahsFace channel last year (her videos get hundreds of thousands of views). This really sucks! I thought they promote themselves for having copyright free music .... this is FALSE ADVERTISING

Well, I see your perspective. But I think from their point of view, they still have the right to claim your video, at least from a legal perspective.

I paid for a 1 year sub and still got this. 63 Claims on one video, and I bought a 1 year sub before I ever posted it, because i was happy to pay for this service because i mainly do music videos and understand the importance of having that copyright clearance. Despite the fact that I ALREADY HAVE A SUBSCRIPTION, they said I had to buy a sub, but I am already subscribed and paid a full year in advance. I got the same canned response as the guy in the video, and after a couple of replies explaining that I did indeed pay for a license and gave them my email and no less than 20 screen shots, they sent the same canned response they sent me the first time. I paid and have the receipts and they're still doing this. I am not paying them to swoop in and steal my ad revenue. I'm filing a BBB complaint. I'm a CEH with a film degree, I know copyrights inside and out, these guys are NOT ethical.
One I bought a yearly subscription I had the claims removed, so it's fine

I am also thinking to use epidemic sound but they have clearly told on their website that for monetisation you need to have their license. So i have a question that when you reached 2000 views did you had that license or not.?

I have an question, brother. Were you an active subscriber to Epidemic Sound when downloading mentioned song/music from them or you used their free trial to download the mentioned song/music?
Because based on the email they sent to you, I believed you've downloaded the song/music from Epidemic Sound during free trial plan and also you might cancelled the free trial plan before becoming an active Epidemic Sound subscribers. Moreover, I think during your free trial plan you didn't included your TH-cam channel name on CHANNEL PLATFORM BOXES provided where they've stated - "By adding one channel per platform, we can clear the content you publish on those channels featuring our music and keep it safe from copyright claims."
By not doing so, Epidemic Sound unable to help you to clear the cooking video you've posted with their song/music from any copyright claims.
