After working at both a soft touch and touchless I prefer the touchless. With the soft touch we had to deal with alot of upset customers due to vehicles getting scratched or damaged. The touchless we didnt have to many complaints, just have to make sure you are putting out good products and a strong pre soak. The touchless works much better with heavy mud as well. The only time I will use a soft touch is if its a tunnel wash with employees that pressure wash off the vehicle before it enters.

I have never once been happy with the results of a touchless wash. Touch is the way to go if you actually want it clean. But definitely does scratch. I had a brand new vehicle, and we had a brand new touch tunnel built..took car through 3 different times and there were definitely scratches all over.

Here is what you need to understand about a touchless wash. You need three things to properly wash any car, water (for obvious reasons), friction (to loosen/remove the dirt) and chemicals ( to dissolve and dislodge the grim/dirt).
If you have any one of the above three missing, you will need more of the other two. So in a touchless wash you have no Friction therefore you need harsher chemicals to dislodge and remove the grim/dirt. This is terrible on the paints finish and will erode clear coat finishes over time in addition to dulling the paint. You car will also not be as clean as despite the use of harsher chemicals (very harsh), without the agitation of the soft cloths to dislodge the grim, it tends to remain on the car.
    Hope this helps.

It is hard to compare gas station car washes to an owner operator car wash. Gas station car washes usually do not maintain their car wash, where as an owner/operator is there always looking after their wash. It is interesting hearing your thoughts and comments on various washes. Keep up the great car wash content

I just left one that didn't have brushes. It had long thick strips of a terry cloth type of material. Car is spotless and super shiny. Touchless only removes dry dust/pollen on the surface IMO. When you dry with a towel, all the dirt shows on the cloth.

Soft touch is generally pretty safe and usually does a better job. It may sound rough but the brushes are typically made out of a special material that don’t damage or scratch anything. It only becomes a problem when the brushes get worn out and dirty, which is a testament to the owner and not the car wash itself.

    • @mattdude
      @mattdude 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@slimjimjimslim5923 it’s easier than you might think. It doesn’t take much to see which car wash has their brushes well maintained. Worn out brushes will usually have black spots on them and sometimes broken off bristles. Properly maintained brushes keep their original color and don’t leave streaks when washing.

@@slimjimjimslim5923 you don’t have to do anything like that. But, if you plan on using a soft touch car wash at a gas station, just get a good look at the brushes before using it. If the color on the brushes look bright and shiny, then you know it will be safe and effective. However, if they look faded and have black spots, then try somewhere else. For what it’s worth, although usually more expensive than other gas stations, I find that 7-Eleven does a good job at maintaining their car washes if you’re still worried about gas station owners not caring enough.

Aslong as the car soaks you down with soap before scrubbing, you shouldn’t get any scratches. The only time you might get a scratch is when the wash is made cheaply, the wash isnt maintained or if you have any large vehical accessories. Regarding the express tunnel, we use the highest quality equipment (Sonnys) and chemicals in the business. This equipment will not cause scratches to the clear coat in most cases unless the vehicle is covered in mud. In those situations we advise our customers to spray them off in our self serve before using the tunnel. Regarding detailing, we suggest that customers have their cars fully detailed each quarter. I am a carwash distributer in your area for both Belanger and Pdq, There is a lot of assumption even in the replies on this page about which is better and will this clean or will this scratch. The easiest answer is that it comes down to the owner/ operator. I can get a touchless car wash to clean but the operator needs to keep it that way. Most of the complaints about a touchless not cleaning are due to operators not understanding the chemistry or not wanting to pay what it costs to get there. The easiest place for operators to help their bottom line is in the chemical cost as electricity, water and sewer are somewhat fixed. Many operators will thin out the chemical to the point where it doesn't work and then their car counts start to drop as well. You end up choosing a point that is good enough as a trade off for one car in the bay for twice as long or twice the cost of chemical or is a 90% clean acceptable. In cloth washes most of the In Bay Automatics use soft neoprene almost like a wet suit and the issue with scratching is two things, one what was on the vehicle before you that is now on the cloth or how long since it was cleaned and are they using the correct soap, again cutting corners on the soap causes problems.
I believe that in one of your other videos you showed your entry unit and it may have been a wash select 2 or a portal, the wash select 2 is toward the end of its life cycle and the portal has replaced it as Unitec's stand alone entry unit. The c-start you were looking at at both of the locations in this video are a stripped down model similar to the portal for gas stations or anywhere that doesn't want or require the extra features of a portal, Both are made by Unitec so it is very similar to what you have.
In the world or in bay automatics traditionally the big three have been ryko, mark 7 and Pdq. feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Buuut touchless requires a couple of things: Proper presoak foam (a thick layer) very high pressure rinse... Tryfoam (LOTS OF IT) Wax/Clearcoat protection etc...
This touchless in the video had very little foam soo it couldnt wash the Pick-up very well.

I don’t think this video was entirely accurate, both washes were bad examples of both types of automatic washes. The Mark VII touchless didn’t have correct chemistry to remove the bird crap and other dirt, the Ryko was VERY bad, you can see the top brush missing almost all of its foam on the left side, and those rear brushes’ pressure was set way too high, with lower pressure it would’ve been much more gentle on the car. With the right example of both this video could’ve been a lot better. I’m tired of people saying the soft touch machines scratch, unless they are a very specific kind of brush, they don’t. The one in this video is kind of the worst of both worlds. Brush pressure set too high with bad brush material. Good soft touch washes use closed cell foam. It’s a foam that is very dense and cannot absorb water or dirt, making it very safe on the car. The brush type in this video is called Foambrite. It’s Ryko specific, and it’s pretty bad. It’s much more dense than regular foam and doesn’t repel dirt as easily, which is why you see a lot of dirty Ryko brushes. On top of that it doesn’t break as easily, making it easier to damage cars. Regular foam will snap off if it gets caught on something making it very safe for cars. The other type is soft cloth, which is as you would expect, cloth. It absorbs water and dirt too, making it sandpaper after a few muddy cars go though. This brush type is commonly found at tunnel car washes. Always look for non tunnel non Ryko soft touch washes for the best experience. Like I said, bad examples of both types. Please try this again at a professional car wash instead of gas stations, it makes the entire automatic car wash industry look bad when it’s just crappy managers that don’t care about the car wash.

It is extremely rare for a soft touch to scratch. Filament was thought to scratch if it got worn out, though that would only happen if it was also dry, otherwise, it would leave deposits that look like scratches. Foam brushes, like what's used on modern car washes, like the SoftGloss Maxx 5 brush, resists dirt and debris, cannot scratch unless somebody literally ties an object in the brushes, which is unlikely. Cloth brushes however, oh my. A GIGANTIC fail. If you don't clean them, they get plaque, you need to bleach them one by one, yuck. And it loves to pick up debris.

Have you thought about hiring an attendant to do handwashes? You already have the bays and hiring one person and charging $15 per wash seems like a no brainer and you are giving a superior service to any automated car wash.

Nah. The least amount of moving parts for me the better so I can scale with less headaches. Might be a good idea for someone with 1 or 2 washes.

I prefer self-serve, that way, my car does not get damaged...again.

This is why those that care about their car or truck go to a self serve car wash, do it themselves by hand at home, or have it done by hand by a professional. Tunnels suck!

Nothing like a Hydrofluoric acid bath for your vehicle....The scratches are free.

The whole idea is to use it regularly and not let bird shit cake and dry on your vehicle. 😂

So basically: "The touch wash didn't scratch anything OR damage anything and did a far better job cleaning at a SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper price. And basically everything I can make up to say bad DIDN'T happen and actually did everything better. Buuuuuuut... uhm... OH! OH OH OH! IT MAKES NOISE! AND I DON'T LIKE THAT AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU! ... plus, I own a touchless, and therefore of course I'm going to say it's better. Oh yeah. I'd DEFINITELY recommend spending more money to get your car less clean."

I have been in the business for 18 years now, started detailing and now own 5 locations offering automated, hand wash and self serve.
Every system is flawed, contactless are just not good enough for very dirty cars, I don't own one myself, but do have a contact automated wash. Contact washes do put tiny scratches in your clear coat, but a good polish every year will take care of these.
All said though, even your self serve bays will scratch paint. The brushes will pick up grit from the floor and dirty cars and will put tiny scratches in your clearcoat. If I was to use a self serve wash, I would take my own sponge or mitt and always avoid the brush.

A "soft touch" carwash is good IF ONLY it's been maintained well. 99% of these are NOT. They contain grime inside the brushes. Those will create swirls and scratches. What does this mean? Expect 100% of these gas station washes to leave your car with scratches. And 90% of those dedicated "fast car wash" washes.

Automatic car washes with brushes, no matter the type of brush will clean better but they destroy your paint. Never use them!
