Never forget, this was the first proper open world game (only beaten by the rushed Vosloo fronted "Boiling Point") since "Project I.G.I" tried by using what was essentially a flight sim engine. Crysis was/is great, but my hours accrued in STALKER beats time in Crysis by a couple of thousand hours for a reason. I gave Boiling Point away, unfinished. Edit: Excellent revisit Yamiks - 11/10 :)

Nice touch to see the glow in the dark sight blade on the SA80 sight wasn't working in the game, because mine never did and I never knew of any that did work.
Almost all of the weapons in the Zone are dumped army surplus of one kind or another. In Call of Pripyat (the sequel) there is a repair and upgrade system. The SA80 is all over the place, and all are worn out and have the lowest reliability of any rifle in the game. To get it to run at all well you need to modify the heck out of it. In the first game Call of Chernobyl there is no repair mechanic. Weapons accuracy drops and jam rate goes up as they wear. The SA80s are great (because the first shot accuracy is good and the scope doesn't suck) for about five minutes. After that you throw them away.

I said this before and I will say it again: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl was the best of it's series in atmosphere and "plotline" (for the ones who gave a s**t about it) while S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat was the best of all 3 in gameplay and overall polish. The 3rd one could've beaten the first if the story line and overall gameplay was expanded, it solved many of the initial issues like the clunky menu and inventory system, gave shortcuts to healthpack and other consumables to be used and graphic wise, it looked a bit more polished with the map and environment properly done, I especially loved the atmosphere in the 3rd region (of Pripyat city) but, sadly enough, the last area although it was the most awesome and interesting (at least for me) it was also the most rushed in story and gameplay from all 3, with just a couple of missions happening in the area and lacked the necessary exposition to the most famous Ghost Town of the planet (as Call of Duty presented it, "50.000 souls used to live in this city, now it's a ghost town"). Which is a shame and I can confirm that all 3 games had the same issue. I loved the variety we were introduced in all 3 games, from the marshes and the swampy areas to the Security Cordon presented in the first 2 games (controlled by Military Police) to various factories near the city limits, the Trash Landfill, the Red Forest, the Train Hub with the Train Station and various, small villages around the area and all the hidden Soviet military bases with multiple purposes and secret activities. But they all lacked the city's eerie feeling since everything was somewhat layed out in open field wih only the buildings of large factories and bases or the bunkers and tunnels were limiting and forcing you to be watchful at every step. Yet I loved Pripyat and it's environment, since you were always surrounded by supposedly empty buildings and blocks, you never knew what lured into shadows and from time to time there was a building where the fears were proven real and bloodsuckers, psychic mutants or even the basic Monolith soldiers were waiting in ambush prepared to give you that "Ohhh, sh*t" moment by each corner of a wall and each opened door overlayed with various radiated pockets, anomalies and other dangerous stuff hiding valuable items, equipment and artifacts for you to discover and making all the effort worth trying to discover and explore - too bad this same area was always rushed and skipped 75% of it's entire layout which felt like the last, deadlyest and crazyest zone which was the most interesting to explore (and was also filled with various, famous buildings showcased in various movies and other games like the Swimming pool, the hospital, the hotel with the roofed-up passageway or the infamous Ferris Wheel abandoned before the kids went inside it - all inspired or modelled by the real-world sites of Prypiat that rooted further that immersive feeling into the Ghost Town) just before entering the last level to end the game. This game series deserve a sequel - one that will check out all the rushed and unfinished points the original games lacked while keeping the stuff that worked and was well implemented, all while the first games will always have a special place for me and will remain amazing classics that made them unique in their exposition: a first-person survival-horror shooter inspired by real-world places and disasters, while exposing us to amazing, gruesome, surreal and curious monsters and phenomena that defies anything natural, yet has somehow an explanation to "How" and "Why" and plays with our fascination for mutations, superpowers, real-world disasters and real-world inspired places and historical events. Something that Fallout lacks and will never manage to capture since it loses touch with real world at it's core: the lore, the places t's set, the monsters design and the game mechanics.

If you really want to experience the game go do try two major "mods"(more as a new game by itself) - Stalker Anomaly and Dead Air, both available for free download without the need of the base game
a game designed for me to love it, but one that also made Bethesda look like a capable developer. I have mixed opinions about it to this day. had some fun, but also the jank pulled me out of it so much i never completed it (this from back when steam didn't exist let alone the vast game list I accumulated via bundles and discount/bought games picked up since. thankfully, back then I had already played to completion THE ghost recon game (and to a far more limited extent it's multiplayer, still had dial-up back then), which allowed for traversal of larger landscapes. and much later on Metro eventually gave me a sense of what stalker could have been in a better engine, but even still metro was a far more modern linear-corridor-shooter affair while stalker had a nice sense of exploration if you could ever get past the audible ~CLUNK~ noise anytime you tried to do anything.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is (in this ones opinion) one of the best FPS's it has played and usually does a rerun of SoC and CoP at least once a year, it also has played anomaly and needs to get lost alpha back after switching pc's lol :D

Definitely play the originals. They're well worth it. You're doing yourself a disservice by skipping them.

Try them out, they are dirt cheap on steam (clear sky is a bit iffy without mods though)
