Winner of two Newbury Medals, Lowry is a celebrated author, renowned for tackling difficult issues in a way that is accessible to a younger audience. Her best known work reflects this, with Number the Stars telling the story of a Jewish family escaping from Denmark during WWII, and The Giver Quartet, a dystopian novel series, being banned from inclusion in some school curricula due to its darker themes, such as suicide and euthanasia.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
So glad to have seen this. Answered all the things I wanted to hear about. Very inspiring for all teachers and writers.
Our English/Language Arts class in 7th grade, back in 2002/2003, read The Giver.
