My favorite thing about this game was that at the time of it's release it was a breath of fresh air. So many jrpgs were chasing that realistic, western art style and highly stylized games like this fell to the wayside.
It's been a few years since I posted this one, but I remember the "all-out defense" working fairly well as long as you time it right before the highly telegraphed attacks. But I do wish there were more defense options, or maybe some AI customization like in Tales games.
The familiar-catching definitely is frustrating at times. I think my least favorite aspect was learning when you 100% the game, you unlock a car to drive in the overworld. It sounds cool, but when you've nothing left to do in the game, it feels kinda bittersweet.
Reminds me of in Mario64 when you find Yoshi on the top of the castle after getting 120 stars and he gives you 99 1-ups... I was like "bro, I just 100% the game, what the hell am I gonna do with 99 lives?" lol
I love this game a lot. Oliver is such a sweet, pure character with sweet motives, and the ways that the narrative ties into his own story makes me cry my eyes out. Even now I get teary eyed just hearing some of the music and I haven't even played it since the PS3 lol. Really should go back to this one again. Gameplay wise I remember loving it. I got REALLY into it and was just swapping characters left and right mid-battle and giving them all direct commands lol, it's tbh a lot to juggle and kind of a lot to ask from people, but IF you can get into the groove of playing that way it can be a great time (although yes, having to tell everyone to defend manually was a pain lol...)
The banes you described in the review have proven to be an absolute boon for me, as someone who has a very small library of demanding but fulfilling RPGs. Taming a familiar I didn't have yet and level grinding the ones I do have while scouting for rare drops cancel each other out. It's like making a separate dish on the stove while your deep dish has to sit in the oven for a while. Absolutely the best way to enjoy the game is fulfilling requests and filling out out Errand Cards for the quality of life improvements. For the alchemy aspect, food is definitely primed for end-game since the feeding process and crafting high-end snacks are so damn tedious. The medals and gear crafting on the other hand are more accessible and absolutely insane. At the moment I'm actually maining Swaine with medals that boost his attack speed and maximizes damage at full HP. And since he is a gunner, he keeps these benefits, and the build renders his MP usage negligible, allowing for more flexibility with his preferred familiars' offensive capability. I fell out of the Pokemon scene hard, outside Legends Arceus, and Ni No Kuni has been scratching my itch since the spring of this year.
Anything Studio Ghibli touches turns out beautiful. Another awesome review from my favorite TH-camr! You look fantastic as always! Thanks for recommending and reviewing this!
I just started this game over the weekend, got about 10 hours into it, got to the boat. Feeling like I'm about to quit it. Everything is tedious and all the back tracking takes up so much time.
Awesome review as always. I played through this about a year ago and was stoked about the Ghibli affiliation. The gameplay wasn't for me, and I think you nailed it on all your commentary on the gameplay. The story is where it's at, and that's what kept me going. However, the story started really dragging for me at about the halfway point. I was also a tad disappointed at how few hand-drawn animated scenes there were. The game teases you with a TON of hand-drawn scenes early in the game. Then those kinda disappear til the end. Not my cup, but I'm glad I played it.
@Def Style it really isn't, if you get to know the combat system it becomes really fun, while single player mmo rpgs can be hard to learn once it clicks it clicks like nothing else in the RPG sphere. Cannot say the same about the second game, though if you want to try games like this I recommend all the Xenoblade games (1, 2, X, and the upcoming 3) for rpgs that are like XB in which they have unique combat and pretty good stories I recommend Valkyrie profile 1, 2 and Indivisible.
I recognize that there are only so many games in the world to play, but it is always wild to me when a review comes from a channel I'm subscribed to releases a review on a game I've started playing within the past week. Love to see it. Cheers and good video as is tradition.
I really wanted to like this game, but a lotta your complaints mirrored mine. I loved the art and the world, but MAN it is grindy and slow. Great review!
Just before Ni no Kuni came out I was really into Studio Ghibli, with my favourite being Nausicaa Valley of the Wind. It's been years since I played Ni no Kuni on the PS3 & I might play it again once I clear my backlog.
I still remember missing out on the Collector's Edition for this game on PS3 but eventually getting the standard version was well worth it. It really does make you feel like you're playing a more classic jrpg that feels and looks a lot like an anime. With Joe Hisaishi as composer, it's a really well designed jrpg.
Excellent review. Pros and cons are the same that I would have pointed out. Also what you didn't mention here (but in another video), the world map is gorgeous and on of the best.
my only real issue was the lack of voice acting. But you talking about the 3ds version made me remember that game existed and makes how I felt the game extra content wasn't exactly needed and just felt so tacked on.
I still haven’t completed this, made it up to the portion where the genie mechanic is introduced but stopped because it got too hard 😂 wasn’t expected that
This review made me feel much better about not having the best time when I first tried this game on switch. I found it to be a beautiful game, but it's a bit too plodding & grindy for me. Usually I don't mind stuff like grinding at all, but I found it difficult to enjoy or even get used to the combat. I almost wish I could get a copy of that DS version that's just regular turn-based battles.
I played Ni No Kuni back on the PS3 back in 2013 and my experience on the Switch version last year differed greatly. I was a lot more critical of the game. I did feel the game lacked something. I got tired of the whole one city per continent/region. The towns and cities are visual beautiful but you can't explore them much, you can enter like two shops and the main castle which is just one room, it's not like Dragon Quest where you can explore every corner of the city. Another thing I noticed there wasn't a lot of characters in the game. For example in Ding Dong Dell, the only important character there was the Cat King. The game felt empty in many regards. But I still liked it
Beware! I heard the first and second game play very different. I hear two is easy and the first one... THAT I know from experience and it could get ROUGH.
man, I loved Ni no Kuni when I first played it on ps3 back in the day. I never got truly far in it though. Once I saw it n my switch though I admitely had to grab it. I definitely gotta find time to truly play it again and beat it.
This was literally the game I got my Switch (1st console ever) for. Love Ghibli, but didn’t even know what an rpg was when I bought it 😅 I didn’t get very far because of the combat & was completely unfamiliar with turn based combat at that time. (Now I’ve discovered a love for rpg’s thanks to Earth Bound and am collecting only rpg physical games ie. XenobladeC 1,2) I just picked up a $20 copy of Nino Kuni 2 to add to my backlog. Your most excellent review of this game was much appreciated and I will certainly give it another try eventually 😅😉 p.s. Your hair is so dope 👊🏾
Physicals are nice it's just becoming less and less feasible as the collectors treat physicals like the stock market and modern machines move away from physical in general. If I were rich I'd be all about it
great vid. I Remember being a broke college student and finally having a chance to play the game. it misses a lot mechanically but is ultimately a super interesting gem.
I totally agree with you but their is just one thing. It's not pokemon, the familiales are not capture, they choose to follow you. So THIS make the game different because it make them choosing to participate to the quest of saving the/their world with the heroe. And this makes the game more clever AND benevolent than every other gatcha games. You Can totally play the game with a child watching because the games is full of positive messages without being childish.
1:40 OMG I didn't know that. But that explains why everything after the djinn felt so tagged on for me. Honestly my thought was just end it after the djinn. Now to be fair what comes after the djinn isn't bad it's just feels like it has no place here
I appreciate your cometary video And The into And I never heard of this Game before but I really appreciate Lady of pelvic I do like eating Reesie cups as well
Just found your channel and love your reviews. I played Ni No Kuni on the switch a few years ago and loved it, but the Esther Struggle was real. Literally the worst teammate ever.
There are these one enemies (can't remember what they are called) that drop insane Xp like a metal slime. That along with making good equipment made this way less grindy.
Is that how Ghibli is pronounced!? I’ve been saying it wrong all this time… not that I’ve been saying it very often I remember following this game quite closely when it first came out on DS, it’s quite likely I would have bought it if that version was localised. But instead I didn’t even know about the PS3 version until a long time later and I never ended up getting it
If you are pronouncing it like Gib (like give, but with a "B") and Lee, then you are saying it right. She isn't saying it correctly, but many people make this mistake. The word Ghibli is an italian word. I forgot the backstory on why Studio Ghibli is named so. They/Japanese also pronounce it as Gib Lee.
REALLY enjoyed this game over all. I think the only thing that felt a bit off for me, was after the final added chapter of the game added for when it was brought over to PS3. On the one hand, it was nice to have more game to play, but on the other hand, it definitely felt like a bit of an after thought over all and just didn't flow as well, similar to the added content of the DS version of Chrono Trigger. Regardless though, still a great game. Nice job on the video!
I had to make the tough decision of dropping Ni no Kuni to wanting to start Ni no Kuni II That desert level really kicked my butt and kept running out of money reviving my partner
It's probably due to Ni No Kuni being made by Level-5, but there are a lot of similarities between it and Yo-Kai Watch. Never got to play Ni No Kuni until it came out on Switch, as I never had a PS3, but Yo-Kai Watch 1+2 certainly took up my time with its fun/quirky game play/story. XD
I adore the art style of this game but yeah...I had a few frustrations which sort of brought down the experience. I remember fast travel didn't actually become available until roughly halfway into the game. Running back and fourth isn't the worst but I didn't like how slow Oliver felt when he was running in the overworld, it was practically impossible to avoid enemies for quite a while 😅
I enjoyed this game well enough on PS3, but I was disappointed by the story content. Esther and Swaine didn't contribute much, there were few anime cutscenes later on, and NPC conversations could be very dull. It was just lacking in energy. I wouldn't mind giving it another chance or trying out Revenant Kingdom. Having played many more JRPGs since then, I'm realizing there really aren't many like Ni No Kuni these days. It has a very classic feel to it. Thanks for the nice review and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on 13 Sentinels! Are you excited for Xenoblade Chronicles 3?
Love the style, story and characters but yeah it was too much of a grindfest for me. It probably would’ve been one of my favorites though if I had played it when I was younger and had all the time in the world.
It's interesting. The combat in this one wasn't my cup of tea. The difficulty spikes you brought hampered a lot of my enjoyment. Story I really enjoyed though. It really did feel like I was playing a Ghibli movie. NnK2 though had pretty simple action combat, which I preferred, but I found the story to be lacking.
I actually didn’t enjoy this game all too much compared to most of the other JRPGs I’ve played 😞 I couldn’t remember why, but all of your criticisms covered just about every base. I had a pretty rough time completing it. From what I can tell, there’s no monster catching in the sequel but I’ve ended up deciding not to follow through with playing it
To be fair, recruiting in SMT 3 can feel totally random as well... Great review, as always. You really do put in the time with these games and give them the respect and criticism they deserve. Good work!
no, no, no SMT has random elements to be sure. And it is aggravating. But AT LEAST you can initiate it. You can single out the target and at least try for it. This game, you don't even get that. It is 100% out of your hands.
Cool review, Lady Pelvic. I played this game on the PS3 some years ago and personally I couldn't get into it. I didn't like the combat all that much and I found the game held your hand a little too much. Also, I found Drippy annoying and the story didn't grab me. It's cool that you liked the game but personally, this game did nothing for me.
NI no Kuni 2, the world is even more vibrant and colorful then the first game, has a town building system and also it forgoes the whole monster hunting and micromanagement mechanics for something different. Anyways check it out when you get the chance.
This game has mixed feelings for me. I love the story and graphics but the combat system isn’t my favorite and familiar catching which can be a pain. (Almost “gatcha” mechanics). But the story and everything else really helps push the game into classic territory. However, I do wish they’d maybe add some Qol improvements with the PS4 and Switch release. (Plays and looks great on Switch also!)
I love the music, animation, characters and world...but goddamn I hate the combat. I've tried 3 times and cant get past 15 hours in because of how miserable it is. Braindead ai and team it becomes a chore to play so quickly.
This is one of those games I try to replay but can’t because of the atrocious AI. 😩 I constantly got pushed out of the beautiful, whimsical nature of the game after becoming super frustrated with the combat due to their poor performance.
I love and hate this game :P I played this game to completion, post game content and all, but so much infuriated me. Like, Oliver runs on the world map like he has rocks in his pants, and you get a lot of fetch quests, some requiring a gigantic backtrack. Also, I'm not a huge fan of Dragon Quest like grinding metagame, i.e., there is a special monster that drops all the XP, while the others give you some at best. I don't remember the name of the "metal slime", but it spawned in some steep cliffs nearby an astec like city.
they announced in 2020 that they would not plan any releases outside Japan after shutting down American operations. Unless they choose to outsource development and localization. This is also not counting Ni No Kuni Crossworlds which was developed by another studio
This game is so good! But I sold it for like 3 bucks to gamestop because I played the shit out of it to get the plat trophy and I'll never pick it up again.
I liked Ni no Kuni, but I hated the grind fest, and I honestly didn’t like the White Witch storyline. It felt out of place, in my opinion. You can really tell the game originally ended after Shadar’s arc. I loved the music and graphics, and a whole lot of the story. Combat was definitely the weakest part of this game. The sequel had a massive improvement. Great review, again, milady~
@@PelvicGaming Unfortunately it's the reason I've never finished this game. It is so frustrating! I'm glad you pointed it out in your review. Love everything else in the game (other than capturing familiars)
Oh, wow. This is the first and the last time I've watched a review (or anything for that matter) on this channel. In exactly 2 minutes and 14 seconds, you managed to spoil literally 95% of the whole game, jesus. I'd say "terrible journalism", but this content doesn't have anything in common with journalism, save for the "j" in "J-RPG" that you're trying to "review".
Oh, wow. This is the first and last time I'll respond to you on this channel. In exactly 2 minutes and 14 seconds, you managed to show me your highly sensitive to what a 'spoiler' is. Different to each person. What I described is maybe within the first hour or so in the game. I mention what you'll be doing mending hearts - you dunno whoses hearts, their story on how they allowed it to break in the first place, the journey to get it back. The briefing on the characters to much for you? Knowing the daughter of a great sage? You dunno who the great sage is, why he's the great sage, or Swaine, a petty thief with more to him. Too much to know that there is more than one note to a character? Or was it Shadar and the white witch? Seeing them too much even though they're on the box art? A suggestion for you, if you are THAT sensitive to spoilers, perhaps don't watch any video on a game you're interested in. I would say thanks for the "feedback" but this comment doesn't have anything constructive and is really just a mean individual. Byeeeeeeeeeee.
party AI was hot garbage yea. Damn near every boss fight they be dead and solo it as Oliver spamming spells and eating lots of candy for MP recover. This was way more fun to play as, screw having idiotic party lol.

Running back and fourth isn't the worst but I didn't like how slow Oliver felt when he was running in the overworld, it was practically impossible to avoid enemies for quite a while 😅
Great review!
Loved this game, absolute masterpiece for me
Great review and looking forward to FF12’s review.
I couldn't get past the combat system; the friendly AI is always suicidal!
Great review, your lovable.
Thank you! ^-^
Up with DQ11 and ffx as my favourite RPGs
I actually didn’t enjoy this game all too much compared to most of the other JRPGs I’ve played 😞
I couldn’t remember why, but all of your criticisms covered just about every base.
@@PelvicGaming I know, it was a joke. That's so frustrating though. I'm sure it gave you flashbacks of trying to get legendary Blades...😩
Lady Pelvic is 🥰😍🤩😍😍🥰🤩😍
Cool review, Lady Pelvic. I played this game on the PS3 some years ago and personally I couldn't get into it. I didn't like the combat all that much and I found the game held your hand a little too much. Also, I found Drippy annoying and the story didn't grab me. It's cool that you liked the game but personally, this game did nothing for me.
The best thing you can do when you face an obstacle is just let everyone die and just handle the boss with your main
That's exactly what I did
Great review! Did you play through again? You get the buggy from the real world. It's a fun game
i didn't realize the original version was so different
Almost gatcha mechanics. That would explain the newest entry in the series Ni no kuni Crossed Worlds
i just stayed with the starter familiars the whole way through
I love the music, animation, characters and world...but goddamn I hate the combat. I've tried 3 times and cant get past 15 hours in because of how miserable it is. Braindead ai and team it becomes a chore to play so quickly.
Mr. Dripz... my surname.
This is one of those games I try to replay but can’t because of the atrocious AI. 😩 I constantly got pushed out of the beautiful, whimsical nature of the game after becoming super frustrated with the combat due to their poor performance.
Sadly, I can understand that. U.U
I am so concerned for Level 5 right now, they've been incredibly quiet lately.
I really hope Ushiro hasn't been canceled. Again.
they announced in 2020 that they would not plan any releases outside Japan after shutting down American operations. Unless they choose to outsource development and localization. This is also not counting Ni No Kuni Crossworlds which was developed by another studio
@@drone124 NIS or XSeed or even Nintendo could always localize it if it comes out.
It's too bad that it's not available for Xbox One/Series, though. 😢😢😢
In the title you call it "wrath of the witch witch" and that just tickled me.
Shhh lol
So right on the AI allies. DUMB! Thankfully, it didn't hurt the overall enjoyment of the game.
Man! It did when you were fighting bosses!! They were practically temporary distractions!
@@PelvicGaming Unfortunately it's the reason I've never finished this game. It is so frustrating! I'm glad you pointed it out in your review. Love everything else in the game (other than capturing familiars)
Better late than never :p
This game was amazing. Too bad the second one fudged everything up.
I keep hearing so much mixed things about ni no kuni 2. I hope I enjoy it regardless!
it was never on the 3ds lol
This game should be a movie instead
Nino Cooney
Sounds like they made the remaster a lot more frustring
Ni no rudy tabootie.
Idk much about this series, that's all i got lol
Real time battles suck
Such a terrible game
Really??
I suck at this game
To be fair, its' not an easy game.
party AI was hot garbage yea. Damn near every boss fight they be dead and solo it as Oliver spamming spells and eating lots of candy for MP recover. This was way more fun to play as, screw having idiotic party lol.
