THIS is the movie to view during Pride Month? It's a Stepin Fetchit cartoon. Are all gay men just like RuPaul? No. The gay community is not the Drag community. Is it a large part of it? No. But it's bigger than nothing. But Pride Month?
This movie was French originally. But it looks like it was made by two studio accountants searching for the lowest common denominator for a straight white audience. Ooh! Look at the cute gays. So effeminate! So comical!
It says anyone who isn't a screaming Nellie cannot possibly be gay. Just like Wong Foo and Priscilla and Rocky Horror.
On the flip side, look at The Object Of My Affection, Philadelphia, Making Love, and of course Brokeback Mountain. None have characters that run around screaming and acting like they want to be ANYTHING but a man. Also Google That Certain Summer, where Hal Holbrook leaves his wife for Martin Sheen.
Pride? How about the original The Boys In The Band. It depicts the self-loathing closeted gay men STILL feel.
But The Birdcage...? This was made for a straight audience only. Brokeback Mountain disturbed straight people because of who the homosexual men were: two macho rugged cowboys who couldn't whistle a show tune if their lives depended on it. They didn't even understand their feelings.
Every stereotype straights have about gay men is on full display. The Birdcage??? It's about pride in casting, pride in accounting ledgers, and pride in the modern studio systems' ability to cobble together a movie that would offend no one.

Nathan Lane is gay in real life but he wasn't out yet when this movie came out. There is a clip of them promoting this movie on Orpah that is really sweet. Oprah was prying a bit and dancing around Nathan's sexuality and Robin Williams turned jumped in and diverted the conversation away from that and protected Nathan ❤

The abortion part is still fine because the joke is that drunk Albert is just mirroring the forgone conclusion of conservative talking points back at them. That’s the funny part. It’s saying the quiet part out loud. Holds up.

I saw this when it came out. It is a remake of a French film. Overall, I think it has aged pretty well. It reflects the climate at the time. Of course there are things that don’t land well in 2023. Movies are a reflection of a specific time in history. It helps people see where we were and appreciate the the steps we have made forward and make a vow to never step backwards.
The character Albert is played by Nathan Lane. In a fairly recent interview he recalled how scared he was to do the publicity circuit for this movie. At the time coming out of the closet would have ruined his career. Robin Williams told him not to worry. He had his back. When an interviewer asked Mr. Lane if he was worried about getting type casted, Robin Williams, without missing a beat, made a comedic comment that threw the interviewer off and the interviewer just went to another question. Robin Williams truly did have his back. Nathan Lane has been very open about his sexual orientation for years now.

40:03 I grew up in the south but around a lot of trans and black gay and lesbians. They were never offended and if you did offend them , they could fight and will win.
I’ll be 40 in a few months and the scene in New Orleans has always been really tough, meaning that the lgbt community didn’t take crap and because they were progressive and stood their ground on respect they didn’t get messed with. I used to look up to my grandmas friend Miss Natalie and didn’t find out she was trans until many years later but she kept a nasty hairdo, nails done and a filthy outfit with heels even though she was already over six feet. And she kept a good man , took care of her elderly mother and was just a sweet but vicious woman when you crossed her. She used to use language like they used in the movie (can’t say it or the comment may get hidden).
I love this movie because this aligns closer to the way I grew up… really open and when someone crossed the line, they got the life knocked out of them. Possibly stabbed. But you had to do a lot to cross the line and the lgbt community used to call each other slurs just like black people or women call each other slurs but in non offensive way

34:10 - him yelling at Spartacus was my favorite part. I remember seeing this in the theater a few times when it came out. A girl I was on a date with seemed a bit confused and conservative (I had more fun with two friends who came along, which was weird for a date). But we had a great time with dinner and this silly film.
I still need to get around to seeing the original French film of the same name (in French). It should be interesting to see where the story came from.

Robin was an awesome person and a great ally. San Francisco loves him because his career started there and really kickstarted the comedian movement there. In fact, following his death, a major tunnel leading to San Francisco was named after him. The rainbow coloring the arch of the tunnel's South facing entrance/exit was already there, which was perfect for Robin, as it was reminiscent of his rainbow suspenders worn on Mork & Mindy, as well as his queer ally status.

This is one of my all time favorites. The biggest reason why is they cast Williams and Lane in the wrong parts. Thats to say they were playing against their type. Williams always played the more eccentric and flamboyant characters, and Lane's roles were usually the more down to earth characters (back then). Not so here, and you know, it damn well worked.

From the musical 'La Cage Aux Folles' based of the same 70s movie that 'The Birdcage' was based on, and which was also covered by Gloria Gaynor:
    "I am what I am
I am my own special creation
    So come take a look
Give me the hook or the ovation
It's my world that I want to take a little pride in
My world and it's not a place I have to hide in
    Life's not worth a damn
Till you can say, "Hey world, I am what I am"
    I am what I am
    I don't want praise, I don't want pity
    I bang my own drum
Some think it's noise, I think it's pretty
And so what, if I love each feather and each spangle
Why not try and see things from a different angle?
Your life is a sham till you can shout out loud
    I am what I am
    I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
    I deal my own deck
    Sometimes the ace
    Sometimes the deuces
    There's one life
And there's no return and no deposit
One life, so it's time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a damn till you can say
"Hey world, I am what I am""

The BIRDCAGE holds a special place in my heart as it is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite comedy. I was fortunate enough to discover this cinematic gem at the tender age of 10 in the movie theater when I had the pleasure of watching it alongside my beloved grandmother. From that moment on, it swiftly captured the hearts of not just myself, but my entire family, solidifying its status as a cherished film within our household. The sheer brilliance of its dialogues resonated so deeply with us that we found ourselves frequently quoting them in our daily lives, bringing a touch of humor and joy to even the most mundane of moments.
Amid the quarantine, where uncertainty and isolation loomed large, The BIRDCAGE served as a comforting refuge for me. I sought solace in its familiar scenes and endearing characters, finding solace in the laughter it never failed to elicit. I must confess, I have indulged in the pleasure of watching this film approximately 20 times during this period of seclusion. Each viewing only reaffirmed the notion that this movie is akin to a warm, nourishing meal for my soul, providing a much-needed respite from the challenges and anxieties of the outside world. I would never be ashamed if Albert was my mother Witnessing Albert's unconditional love and care towards Val is truly remarkable.

I remember as a kid my father watched the original movie: 'La Cage aux Folles' and how he thought that was a great movie. I've never seen it, (cause it was a French movie and my French is not that great like my fathers) so The Birdcage was a new thing for me, but I liked it instantly. Gene Hackman looks great as a dragqueen but Nathan Lane stole the show.
La Cage aux Folles also got turned into a broadway musical and one of the greatest song is 'I am what I am'. One of the actors playing in the Westend to take the leading role calls this song his personal anthem: John Barrowm (aka Dr Who's Captain Jack Harkness). And he did a great job.
I'll see if I can find the link of him dressed up and singing it and post it here.

Fun Fact: most of the songs that the main actors sing were written by the late great Stephen Sondheim. He wrote one original song that was used for the scene with the bubble gum chewing dancer, the others (the beginning of Starina's number and the scene with Robin Williams and Christine Baranski dancing) were songs that got cut from Stephen Sondheim's musicals.

I’m sorry but Val and Barbara are the real villains of this movie. For Val to tell his parents “well they’re not gonna like you so you have to act straight and you need to leave!” Is heartbreaking. Albert helped raise Val and for him to just hurt Albert like that. And then Barbara should’ve just been honest with her parents from the beginning. If things did go bad with her parents I’m pretty sure Armand and Albert would’ve easily accepted her into the family.

funny story...I was in a county jail in Kingman (Mojave County), Arizona, and violent crime is a HUGE problem there (not for me. I was in for petty theft). One night we were all given the option of watching either some war movie (Black Hawk Down, maybe? Or Platoon?), OR The Birdcage. We voted, and what won by a landslide??? These hardened criminals...50% skinheads...and 50% hispanics in gangs...and at first I thought they just wanted to be dicks and make fun of it...but no. They just really loved the movie. Later, since the jail was overcrowded, I had to sleep under the stairs. At one point an 18-year-old kid whose grandfathers, father, and brothers were all serving life in prison, came over to me and scraped a swastika under the stairs right in front of me. I asked him why THE FUCK he did that, and he responds, "what? You're not racist?". That's how severe the racism was there. He then did some more geometrical scraping until the symbol was in no way racist. It looked more like a window. That was 20 years ago, and I seriously hope he got away from that life. I think about him quite a bit, actually.

Saw the preview for your watch-along to this film & pretty much HAD to give it a look...
From what I understand, they initially wanted Robin Williams in the role of Albert - however, Robin Williams had just done Mrs Doubtfire in 1993 where he dressed as a woman, so he was reluctant to repeat himself. Nathan Lane (who had yet to come out publicly) took the role and absolutely SHINED (this really helped launch his career).
Robin Williams also has an uncredited role in "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar" as John Jacob Jinglheimer Schmidt in 1994.
Hank Azaria, who played Agathar Spartacus was also credited for a fabulous performance which stood toe to toe with both Robin and Nathan (he is best known for his voice-acting roles in the Simpsons cartoon series, where he played multiple side-characters)

I thought “La Cage Aux Folles” was much better… but, I’m not a Robin Williams fan. His French counterpart was much less straight-guy-pretending-to-be-gay campy… and the French Albert character did most of the over the top comedy.

  • @hellraiser338

I love this movie but I always hated that Val was such a d***head to Albert throughout the movie. Instead of treating one of my parents like that I simply would have eloped.

I love the actors played these roles. Perfectly cast. What seriously bothers me is the argument that actors that identify as straight shouldn't be able to play gay roles. Robin Williams, amazing!! Nathan Lane, amazing!! Hank Azaria, amazing!! None I dentified as gay prior to this movie. Now many casting directors wouldn't have cast them.

I was raised a conservative Christian. I've shifted to libertarian conservative. I love this movie with one point ... without Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, and Hank Azaria this movie doesn't work. They are the movie. And they're geniuses.

We used to have freedom of speech back then, and now it's all about "Feelings" you are totally right. We just had actual Freedom of Speech back then.

I'm happy to let you know freedom of speech still exists 😃 and how it works, and always has, is you can say something, but the right to say it doesn't then absolve you of responsibility for the statements you make or free you from accountability for the things you say. because if you say it around or about others, that matters 🙂 you're welcome for the much needed explanation of something you seem to be very passionate in regards to, and yet don't know much about.

@@subtlesraf So glad to get such knowledge from the apparent authority of Freedom of Speech. Did my statement hurt your "Feelings" thanks for proving my point. You're also welcomed because I served to preserve your right to spew out such nonsense.
