6 MINUTE 2K VS. 16 MINUTE 5K | WHAT IS HARDER?

  • We generally have this argument at least once a week so I thought I would film the thinkings of some of the guys. What is actually harder for you? 5k or 2k? Obviously these times are very quick but everyone prefers one of the distances, or neither at all!

    The offical GB Rowing spreadsheet says at 6min 2k you should pull a 16:01 5k, so the 16min 5k is officially harder ;)

    THEY ARE BOTH REALLY HARD WHEN YOU'RE YAMMIN' PROPERLY

  • @menschenhaiBG

    They are different benchmarks, so you can't really compare them. For the seasoned athletes 5k is "easier" because the distance is close to anaerobic threshold pace, so its more aerobic. After couple of seasons of extensive rowing your efficiency get better and and anaerobic threshold displayed as x percentage of VO2 max is higher. On the other hand if u train dominant for 5-6k, longer distances, u would probably do mid to long distance intervals on ut1-at paces (long and intensive) and this type of training needs less time to show improvement. However, improving at does not mean you will increase your VO2 max, it just means that you are more aerobically efficient. Younger athletes doesn't have this type of endurance developed yet, mentally also, so they prefer short, higher rate work with higher power output, which suits their higher count of fast twitch muscle fibers which also degrade with age. So if u want to get better at 2k, that is the type of training u'll need to do. However being good at 2k is far from being good for world class rowing. In the wch you will have to race day to day 3-4 times, where every race is harder then the one before. In order to get there you'll need fast recovery mechanisms that are developed only by thousands of hours spent in all types of aerobic and anaerobic training. When training for high performance rowing, goal is to decrease level of blood lactate during the race so it becomes more aerobic thus less demanding on the athletes. So if anyone bothers to read this post the conclusion would be younger athletes will more likely achieve sub 6' 2k, while it doesn't mean they will perform good on high level. On the other hand, athletes in the long term will more likely achieve 16' 5k with not much of an effort due to better anaerobic threshold.

      Appreciate the long thought out response! I agree, the 5k is something that can be improved purely with time spent training

    The sooner I can get off the erg, the better, so I`d prefer the 2k really. Never done an 5k test here, so I can`t relate. Interesting to listening to the reasoning each athlete has when deciding which is better. Coxie is North American, with British parents,yes?

    what kind of stroke rate are you guys doing for the 5k?

  • @benhodson610
    @benhodson610 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally find 5ks a little bit easier to manage because you have more time to get into a rhythm and zone, whereas a 2k you have way less room for error and more max effort all out. That said, I’m a bit more of an endurance athlete myself

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting I look at the 5k as less margin for error! 😂

  • @user-go7mc4ez1d
    @user-go7mc4ez1d 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    5k is far harder for me, I'm pretty light but have a good power to weight ratio and can sit at quite a high rate. So I prefer shorter more explosive tests where I can rely more on aggression than physical power

    Yeah do one one strokerates! my rates are very high (500m r50, 5k r32) and people are telling me my rates should be much lower for my height (192cm or 6'3). Maybe do a high strokerate vs low strokerate!

    1:30 for 2k sounds harder than 1:36 for 5k for most elite level rowers who can consider it.

    How come when your rowing you don’t draw all the way into your abs? Is it something to do with accounting for height differences or just a habit??

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually something we are working on, making sure we are finishing off the stroke as best we can. Generally we won't really hit the body though when we do it right but definitely can do it better!

    What are the equivalent benchmarks for Women?

  • @OxPaul
    @OxPaul 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would answer this with reference to “Paul’s law” (not my invention, but have blogged about it paulergs.weebly.com/blog/a-quick-explainer-on-pauls-law). 1:30 split for 2k is equivalent to 1:36.6 for 5k, which is 16:06mins. So the 16min 5k is harder than the 6min 2k...

    Out of the men at both GB and Leander, where do you rank on the erg approximately and out of how many for both?

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to clarify, there is nobody that trains at Leander and is on the GB team. Or do you mean that have done both? At the club we are all in the mix, couple of guys at the bottom end, couple at the top end!

    • @dsdw123
      @dsdw123 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cameron Buchan I meant those who have done both. What about your erging position at Leander then? E.g. top 20%, top 10% etc?

      Somewhere between 18:30 and 19:00 (I'm going to try a sub7 next week, 5k is at 19:00) depends if you're more endurance or strength. Also a 7min 2k is about equivalent to a 1:30 500m

    • @Rover200Power
      @Rover200Power 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      According to the GB Rowing Lactate Training spreadsheet a 7min 2k should give you a 5k of 18:41.2 or 1:52.1/500m.
