    Suikoden 3 was the first game in the series I was able to be excited for on release, I remember learning about it from a full page ad in a magazine my friend had brought to our science class in middle school. "Oh damn you get to play as a Harmonian that is going to be _awesome!_" I definitely enjoyed it, but wasn't really blown away by it at the time. Set it aside and revisited it a couple times over the years, but never got far enough in any replays to even finish any of the chapter 3 stories. Fast forward to last year, when I finally committed to a full playthrough again, and... wow. Could not believe how much I loved the game, and it easily shot up to my #2 in the Suikoden series (sorry but S2 will never leave that top spot).
    I especially loved the dynamics shown for the various Grassland tribes. As a native american I saw a lot of my peoples' tribes and their dynamics represented in the various cultures of the Grasslanders - how the Lizard Clan and Karaya Clan were different peoples with their own priorities and lifestyles, with a history of clashes between each other, but who could still come together towards common goals like trying to repel the Zexen invaders. There were some elements of mysticism bullshit that I wasn't really a fan of (oh sure aila is able to just "listen to the earth" okay game), but overall I was blown away by how it presented the people of the Grasslands not as savages resisting an inevitable change, but a people who's values and beliefs were just as valid as those in Zexen or Harmonia. Love Suikoden 3, don't feel I can sing its praises enough. Loved your review of it, and especially your take on Chris' character arc!

      Yeah I definitely think this was a turning point for the series creatively and visually. I still appreciate it for what it's worth but some elements have aged incredibly poorly.

    The Trinity System makes this entry of the series my fave. With Suikoden only being pushed from it's throne once I dove into "The Legend of Heroes" with "Trails in the Sky: The First". The latest Trails-installation even has a sub-par Trinity-System as well.

  • @Wuggyboobeaufuf138
    @Wuggyboobeaufuf138 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I'm replaying it right now for the first time since it came out. it definitely holds up in most respects. The much, much better translation that this game got compared to Suikoden 2 certainly helps. I have the same general complaints about the battle system that most people have but it's not a deal breaker.
    I actually ordered this soundtrack online back in the day, so I got it before the game was out. And I was so excited.....and then I heard it and wanted to throw it out the window. It's definitely grown on me, and I like it now, but I will never forget my crushing disappointment after the expectations of Suikoden 2.
    The trinity sight system is the best thing in the game. It's incredibly unique and helps the story telling in a way that other games could just dream about.

  • @taliefer16
    @taliefer16 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This is my favorite Suikoden, in large part due to the trinity system. I LOVE seeing the story from differing perspectives, even Thomas' chapters. I think its pulled off very well in Suikoden 3.

    • @LC356
      @LC356  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have my gripes with it but it definitely was refreshing and helps with most RPG’s linear nature

  • @shouheiakagi2583
    @shouheiakagi2583 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Trinity System is what made Suikoden III as my favorite. Just seeing the many perspectives of each characters was made it more compelling! Going through Hugo's story, completely hating Chris for what "she" did and then playing Chris' story and seeing that she didn't do anything wrong per se, and then seeing the behind the scenes story through Geddoe was a thriller and finishing with that special last character. That system is like switching between Riou and Jowy's perspective in Suikoden II if there was a perspective! That would overblow the story and make the Suikoden II fanbase explode!
    I do
    Hugo 1 > Chris 1> Geddoe 1
    Hugo 2 > Chris 2 > Geddoe 2
    ETC until choosing the flame champion. Which I choose Hugo as it tends to be the canon when it comes to the Flame Champion. To me, Chris should be built as the True Water Rune bearer, since Wyatt is her father, but because of Wyatt's connection to Hugo and Chris, either can hold it.
    Thomas and the dog, play as I go.
    Being able to keep a True Rune? That depends on which Rune is being bore. Something like the Rune of Punishment or the Souleater? NAH not in 100 million years. The True Elemental Runes are a bit more able to stomach, but the visions of the future of what Luc sees, I'm quite sure Hugo, Chris, Geddoe, and Sasarai will eventually see or see different visions of what their True Runes want (I assume a few of the other elemental runes vision of the future is chaos.) The True Elemental Runes at least don't siphon the life of you or others, or deal with the effects of the Moon Rune or the Sun Rune, nor do they force you into circumstances unwilling like the Circle Rune, Rune of Change, or both halves of the Rune of Beginning.
    You can live with the effects of the True Elemental Runes, or even stagnate their effects and live pretty normally, all you need to do is be ignore their vissions like Wyatt and Geddoe did between the time of the Firebringer War and Suikoden III.

    I loved this game so much and collected the 11 Volume Manga drawn by Aki Shimizu (please support her work, she is really talented). Hugo was probably the first dark-skinned character in a JRPG and I remembered how it felt as a young 16 year old to find a character to identify with. And Hugo was not a Mary Sue. He was not overpowered, he doesn't "get the girl", he is the focal point of overall narrative but Geddoe and Chris were no less important to the storyline in different ways.

    Suikoden 3’s opening animation was probably the best part of it. Suikoden 1 and 2 together constitute my favorite RPG of all time… and the. We have 3. Its primary characters and villain were insufferable (particularly the ‘canon’ hero), scripted losses all over the place, the battle system of three groups of two instead of just six… I will say the idea of giving us more agency in the war battles was neat, but that’s about all the praise I can give it. Oh! That and Thomas. Wish he’d been the main character. Or Geddoe. And also I liked playing as the dog. But that’s it. As I see it, 1 and 2 were incredible, then they just skipped to 5 for some reason.

  • @jowilson5581
    @jowilson5581 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've only played 1 and 3, but I love them both dearly and have played them through many times over the years. 3 was a big step forward in representation, not only with Hugo but also with Chris. being able to play as a girl right off the bat and have her be a respected knight who isn't like super sexualized and hyper-feminine was a breath of fresh air in this era of JRPGs. She's surrounded by colleagues who look up to her, she's renowned for her skill as a commander, etc., but then the game also doesn't shy away from having her be tangled up in some really morally messed up stuff, either. Her arc of going from working for the man to helping the resistance at the cost of the life she's built for herself was really compelling. Plus I thought it was cool as hell that Luc from 1 comes back in the way he does. He was a pretty minor character in 1 but this recontextualization of him in 3 was really interesting to me. I'm glad they had the guts to take 3's concept and just run with it as far as they did. I still love the dice game in 1 though. My god was that shit my jam, I'd just sit and play it all day. And who could forget Gremio T_T

    my suikoden jouney started with Suikoden 2 Demo. Suikoden 2 and 3 are at the top of the list for me. After playing S3 i started S4 and was initially dissapointed but S4 grew on me so much that i would place it next to S1. It is S5 that i would put at the bottom as i was constantly reminded of what i liked more in the other ones, like the Skills barely matter for most of the game.

    I thought it was a really good game and the story was really strong. I did not like the fact you could not control all the characters in the battle though. I did enjoy the villain's perspective also which was a nice little inclusion that was obviously never done before or repeated after also and was good to finally get a bit of actual Harmonia into the games.

    • @LC356
      @LC356  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely felt that Suikoden 4 should've been about Harmonia 100%. It seemed like such a natural buildup after the last 3 titles definitely a missed opportunity.

Yoz have Geddoe, who is a not quite the talkative guy, but very intelligent, cunning and wise, since he is 112 years old, due to the True Lightning Rune. Then you have Ace and Joker: Youngster vs older Veteran, which is simply hillarious. Then you have Queen, who is a badass in her own right and last but not least we have Jaques and Aila... these youngsters are the perfect addition to the Crew :)

    I like Suikoden 3 because for the first time, there isn’t a clear “bad guy” among 4 independent factions, although the Zexens were kind of jerks. I also enjoyed the expanding lore of the 27 true runes and the place of the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia in the world.
    The battle system was cumbersome, and the graphics were so horrendous that it would probably be better if they stuck with 2D sprites. The war/battle system also suffered: I like that it was more objective based and you could experience it from different sides, but a tactics system is probably best rather than the web of slightly challenging random battle-style encounters.

    I love Suikoden 3. 2,5,3,1,4 in that order for me. I do not like 4 I had to force myself to finish it. I really liked the trinity idea the castle was on the weaker side. But seeing futch and bright all grown up and being able to use sasari I was in. I really liked the 3 main characters too.

    3 was my LEAST Favorite. that doesnt mean it was bad. it took away alot of what i enjoyed. it copy pasted Saga's battle system for war. you got 6 members but if you chose 3 peoples worth of magic abilities the backrow just.. attacked. thats like cutting your legs off imo and it overall felt like the trinity system although one of the best things about the game made the game disconnect and a trudge to get through. I play the suikoden series once a year So thats not to say i dont enjoy it. but originally i felt that including Luc and the enemies as part of the stars of destiny was super lazy and a shitty decision and after reading the source material i realize it shouldv been 74 enemies with the rest heroes and have evolved for that being an issue

    My only beef with 3 is the absolutely atrocious battle music

    Another franchise that should not have go 3D. The 2D games, just like Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Treasure of the Rudras are graphically timeless. And all PS1 franchises who made the transition to 3D failed, are ugly and barely playable today. Going 3D also fcked the FPS down to or even below 30FPS and that affects gameplay directly!
    2D games can be desgined so beautifully. Not to mention, so many Isometic 3D games make it really dificult to see details. This is especially worse for 3D RTS games. Where the ugly units visually fuse with the ugly pizza puked background textures.
    I cannot recal any issues like that in any 2D isometric game, ever! And i played almost every noteworthy game since the DOS era.
    Suikoden 1+2 are masterpieces you go to when you finished Chrono Trigger. The rest of the Suikoden series is severely lacking in evey single department!
    2D will always be timeless.

      I don’t think the transition to 3D was the problem. For S3 the Trinity Site system and the battle pairing system were way more problematic.

    This game really killed my interest in the suikoden series. Suikoden 1 and 2 were so much better esp the music. I hated Suikoden 3's awful 3 graphics, very bland. Also hated the changes to the combat system. I will take good 2D over bad 3D any day.
    That said I did try and play it back in the 2000s in my 20s so I have to look back and give it another go.
    But SUikoden 1 is by FAR my favourite suikoden and one of my top 5 of all time. Nothing compares to the Suikoden 1 music, story, characters and writing. But esp the music.
