Why Football Clubs Sell Talented Academy Players

  • Between 2014 and 2023, Benfica generated more than £444 million from the sale of their academy players. During the same period, clubs like Ajax, Real Madrid, and Olympique Lyonnais earned over £300 million, while Premier League teams Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester City all made more than £200 million from their academy sales. This video essay explores why clubs sell so many of their academy talents and why selling academy players specifically is such a profitable practice. It also uses the case of Cole Palmer leaving Manchester City for Chelsea to highlight the academy player paradox, where clubs have little choice but to sell their players - either because they don't fit into the club's plans or because the players themselves want to leave.

    I think Ironically this may help the England National Team. Whereas the home grown talent in the past were given an easier route to first team football in England, and their development depended heavily on the structure in the club they played, Now the trend of Aspiring players seeking football development in Europe has created a more Talented Team overall. The likes of Bellingham, Sancho, Loftus-cheek, Tamori, Marcus Edwards are exposed to more styles of football, coaching and management has led to them becoming more complete players far quicker. I think this uninteded consequence of English players given less oppertunity to break into big teams may actually Allow england to finally win on the international stage. It will be interesting to see over the next 15-20 years if this continues and creates are more cosmopolitan national team, as many succesful international teams have in the past. Such as France, Argentina and Spain.

      Such great insight, and I absolutely agree. I’m currently reading Carlo Ancelotti’s “Quiet Leadership” book and in the first chapter he states that English footballers tend to struggle abroad (the book was released around eight years ago). Seeing how that perception has changed with the success of Bellingham, Loftus-Cheek, etc., really shows how much the model and mindset of being an English footballer have evolved since then. Our team is already top-class, but I agree with you, it’ll be interesting to see how we look in another 10 years as the development of English footballers continues to transform.

    Even if he got the playing time he wanted, he'd have never reached the heights he has this season because a Manchester City team was never gonna be built around him.
    Chelsea quickly realized that he came from a team used to winning with a winner's mentality and quickly decided to build the team around him when I believe the original plan was to build a team around Enzo Fernandez.

    I presume I am not the only one who has noticed or at least seen a glimpse of ALEXANDER’s vision for this channel.
    As he garners more by sharing his perspective in the sport and business in football. I’m excited to see how he intends to do that with other sports (if he has the interest) or topics of his interests.
    Also I like how you are giving enough information while building the anticipation for more when watching your content.

    Tbf even I was shocked when we sold palmer cuz he seemed like a great talent but it made sense as he wouldn't be able to break into the team and neither was he willing to fight for a place in the starting XI. A class video once again👍

    That is why I will always adore La Masia while we do sell a lot of academy players we do integrate players into the first team when possible and give them playing time and fans expect academy players to get playing time and time to develop which is one of the reasons why I love Barca so much.

    • @itsmeprasad1987

      Simple why would Barcelona sell top talents. They only sell players that don’t see a future for

    • @watchalexander
      @watchalexander  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +24

      Yeah, Barcelona does a good job of integrating their La Masia players, but there's also the critique that they overplay their young players, which can stunt their development later on.

      Every team does that. Not just Barcelona. Real madrid Integrated Carvajal, before that Guti,Iker,Raul. It's normal for any club to keep their best talents in the club.

    Palmer wanted to go on loan but city told him that its either leave permanently or stay

    • @watchalexander
      @watchalexander  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      In the Sky interview, Palmer mentioned that he was given an ultimatum, which, considering the seasonal timelines, would have been during the 2022/23 season when he was promised more minutes. Towards the end of the 2022/23 season, right before he joined Chelsea, City were open to loaning him out, but by then he was determined to move to Chelsea who wanted him (sources for this are included in the video/bio). Pep Guardiola also recently stated in an interview that this issue had been ongoing for two years, which aligns with the 2022/23 timeline.
