"Boats how're your Picasso skills?" "Never gave it much thought Chief" (Spends all week painting the ship for the third time this month.)

Things like this make me so infuriated about the fate of heavy cruiser USS Des Moines. Efforts were being made to preserve her as a museum at a lake in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However a local art museum threw more resources into protesting Des Moines presence than those who wished to preserve the ship. Supposedly one of their complaints was that they didn't want their lakefront views obscured by a rusty warship. There was so much potential for the art museum and the group trying to preserve Des Moines to work together and make a sort of joint exhibit. They could have worked together to not only preserve the ship but also form a new art exhibit around her featuring artists contributions in warfare. From the creation of camouflage patters in WWI, all the way up to the magician who was tasked with hiding the Suez Canal from the Luftwaffe, and at the heart of this exhibit, a cruiser gleaming with a camouflage pattern resulting from the efforts that those artists helped develop.

Smithsonian Channel is available on TH-cam TV, probably the few reasons to actually watch cable now.

I believe the narrator said that it was not proven that it worked, although it’s veryInteresting. I had never heard about it before.

I don’t get how that would work

The way it works is by breaking up the "look/lines" of the ship. This makes estimating the range and the direction of travel very difficult. Miss estimate the range and you don't shoot (to far away) guess wrong on heading and the torpedo misses

Dave is correct, they also explained how it might confuse enemy who don't know who the ship belongs to

    Royal Navy. Not British navy.

A bit late I know. They say British Navy to be more specific as to who's Royal Navy as many other countries did, and some still do use "Royal" in their armed forces even though they are not British. Yes it is more commonly associated with the British Royal Navy since they were the dominant force for so long that by simply saying "Royal Navy" everyone knew you meant the British.
Other countries who did/do have navies with royal in their names:
Italy, Greece, Sweden, Netherlands, Norway, Canada, Australia, and Denmark.

yeah, i think this video lacks IMPORTANT things, like how did the gay community helped, and how many brave transgender people were involved in this.
also, we need to know about their struggle and brave journey of discovering themselves.
THAT would make an interesting video.

Okay i guess we can just take away the camo fatigues from our soilders then, we can take off the camo paint on our tanks and other vehicles and honestly they didnt even need roundels on planes back in the day. We can just chrome plate everything since aesthetics don't matter

I'm not giving you BS, things such as that were used not just to confuse ships and subs of the size, but direction and speed,
