    When I think ultra-light, I always think 65 litres of gear.

  • @JollyJoel
    @JollyJoel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    An Essential Gear is 65 liter backpack? That's INSANELY HUGE! So, what exactly is Essential about a monster backpack, you need to bring a cabin with you too?
    My backpack is 31 Liters and it is considered a Large backpack. I guess if you're gonna use the backpack as a Sleeping Pad, I'm gonna have to look into that idea, but if that means buying a backpack twice as big as the one I got, there's no point.

    • @deldrise9169
      @deldrise9169 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      31 liters is considered a very small pack actually. My pack is 80 litres and is considered medium.

    I know it's five years later but i just got back from a 5 day trip with temps dipping into the low 30s and rain 4/5 days and my total weight with 2L of water, and a chair was 25lbs, and a 4" thick mattress... you can definitely do light/ultralight and still be really comfortable. Base weight was 11lbs with the chair.

    I have learned that the big difference between light backpacking and ultralight backpacking is about $1,200!!!!!! My down quilt alone that weighs just 19oz cost me $358!
    Tent - 31oz = $390
    Sleep Pad - 14oz = $139
    Down Quilt - 19oz = $358
    Air Pillow - 2.4oz = $55
    Cook kit - 9oz = $60
    Titanium spoon - .4oz = $14
    Titanium Stove - 1oz = $19
    Backpack - 41oz = $299
    Headlamp - 2.1oz = $49
    Rain Jacket - 7.5oz = $119
    Water Filter - 2.5oz = $38
    Poop Scoop - 1oz = $21
    Miscellaneous (clothing, first aid, repair kit, toiletries, knife, maps, electronics - 20oz - 40oz = $150 - $350)
    Grand Total = 10-13 pounds base weight (no food, water, fuel) $1,550 - $1,750

    • @littlebustersoysters9229
      @littlebustersoysters9229 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get on amazon. My whole kit is about $350-400 and my baseweight is sub 20lb. It really does not have to be expensive. In fact, it should be LESS expensive if you bring less.

    • @2323buster
      @2323buster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah UL can def be less than traditional or even light weight. Just depends on what you buy.
      My 20deg quilt (UGQ) which weighs 19oz was $212. The GG murmur is $160 where an osprey atmos is $250+. Pick up a SMD lunar solo for $150 used and it’ll weigh half what a $350+ Big Agnus tent weighs. An MSR pocket rocket is $45 but my Esbit stove cost $13 and is 1/4th the weight. My sleeping pad cost $18 and weighs 4oz (GG CCF pad) or you can pay $200+ for a pad that weighs over a pound. So it's all about what you buy. Anything can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be.

      @Loathomar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Correction - Ultralight camping is a base weigh that is ten pounds or less. Having a total pack weight that is less the 10lb means you are not going to be out for long and you have lots of water to resupply. You need at LEAST 2lb of food per day and 2L of water will weigh 4.4lb, so if you are going for 3 days, you non base weigh will be over 10lb which you need for eating and drinking on the trail.

    I'm an amateur day hiker and i could throw something together that weight less than 10 pounds easily, good enough for 3 season camping, last time i was out i taking a walk to test how the weight felt, and i was way below 5 kg (10 pounds).
    Then again, i do not buy cheap gear since it usually weight more, same goes for military gear which is durable, but weigh a f-tonne. I could go even lower and shave of another half kilo, but i do not want to pay €700 for a sleeping bag.

      If you load up on high calorie food (>400 kcal per 100g) and supplement your meals with olive oil, dried seaweed, peanut butter, nuts...
      Then 14 days' food works out to 22lb which is manageable.
      If you can resupply 1 time during your trip then you can even stay lightweight.
      Else learn wild edibles, fishing, hunting where it's allowed so you can bring less food, IF you're confident in your abilities.
      But what I really want to know is: WHERE do you find a place that's moor than 1 week away from civilisation in this day and age!? 😁

    • @speygeek
      @speygeek 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's for baseweight, but with food and water your total weight should vary between 15 to 25 pounds (IMHO)

    • @2323buster
      @2323buster 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Talking about total pack weigh is fruitless because it is constantly changing and is dependent upon too many variable. Climate, time of year, water availability, resupply frequency and so on.
      Traditional - BW of 20lbs +
      Lightweight - BW between 10lbs -20lbs
      Ultralight - BW between 5lbs and 10lbs
      Super Ultralight - BW between 0lbs and 5lbs

    you make this video but the things showen are not in my mind true ultralight backpacking gear , no one is going to bring a nagine bottle , or the tent showen i will guess is a MSR 2 person tent definitely not in the nowadays ultralight category in comparison to say Zpacks well any zpacks tent weight same as the north face pack , show someone they way to pick the right gear for different kinds of trips . i agree on trying to combine things to use for more than what they tryed to sale you them for . places are great trying to sale you what they want to and not so good at helping to be ultralight well most places not all of them .

    You simply can't carry everything you need to be prepared comfortable and safe in the wild in less than 20 or 30 pounds. Cookware, tent, sleeping bag, first aid gear, food, water, a good heavy fixed blade, spare clothing, and extensive fire starting equipment is all essential bare minimum stuff. If you get lost and need to be ok for an undetermined amount of time, you will need strong sturdy gear that you can rely on not to break, and you should have redundancy especially for fire making and water procurement. If you're just hiking a trail where you know you are only a few hours from a road at any time, it's fine to take a little comfort pack and pretend your camping, but in that situation as long as you don't get lost your gear isn't doing anything but keeping you comfortable anyway. If you are alone in any wilderness environment with no assurance as to when you will be back home, really a 20 or 30 pack is about as light as you can safely get without compromising quality of gear or quantity of ration IMO.

      @MrLoobu: I have hiked & camped numerous times at & below freezing conditions below the tree-line with a pack-baseweight of 9-11lbs, and was perfectly comfortable, safe, well hydrated, well fed and warm. All the essentials were covered, even with redundancies for fire, water and cutting. Food+fuel comes in at about 2lbs/day - so it really works. ATB Gereon

    well I'm heading that way. will see if I can make a video on the way. I will be living with them for months.
    also the fundamental percept of a yogi is non possession or minimalist possession to sustain the body and they are always on the move expect for the rainy season. they literally travel around India.
    I'm so fascinted by the life of yogis. of course most of them are dirty and unkempt etc., but they are the eco warriors that this century needs.
