Remembering driving home from an all-night high school graduation party back in June 1980 in Los Angeles, the song came on the radio along with the sunrise, I would never forget it. We went to Denny's and had breakfast, just like the title of the album..."Breakfast in America."

Supertramp is an intelligent band that incorporated a lot of traditional rock, pop rock, and art rock into their music. I always just labeled them as an art rock band along with another intelligent band called 10cc. It is well worth exploring their deeper cuts (both Supertramp & 10cc).

When I was 13 years old here in Toronto, I went to the fair (CNE) and in one of those sideshow games where you win small, usually worthless prizes, I won my very first prize ever, a Supertramp Breakfast In America record lol. I had no idea who these guys were and pondered throwing it out somewhere so I can enjoy the rest of the evening at the fair but, thankfully, I held on to that thing for the rest of the night and the very next day when I finally put it on my parents ancient, cheesy, disco ball turntable, I was mesmerized at the beautiful sounds coming out of that thing. I think I listened to that record so many times, it turned white. One of the all time best rock albums, I'd rate it up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours etc.. fantastic band.

Lmaoooo!! That’s a great story!! :) I love it! Perhaps we’ve crossed paths at the CNE! 🤣 I saw supertramp in 83’ at the CNE!! Was so sad when they tore it down.. saw so many amazing shows there! Big props to you for shleping thru your day and hanging on to Breakfast in America!! 🤘🏼
Yooo.. I just realized something.. 🤔 I’m 53 now.. born in Toronto in ‘69.. I went to the Exhibition stadium to see Supertramp in ‘83… so I was like.. how old?!! OMGGG i was 13 too!!!! Hahahaa! Small world.. 😜
Ya ya ya.. I was trying to figure it out🤣 I was indeed 13 cause my birthday comes about 3 weeks after the CNE closes every year.. I was about to turn 14! :)

I was in 8th grade when "Breakfast in America" was released. My English teacher brought in song lyrics for songs as a way to help teach poetry to kids in a way that was relatable. At the time, all the kids thought here we go again, an adult trying to be cool. BUT, one day see came in with lyrics from this album. He told us his 17 year-old son recently purchased the album and after hearing the lyrics, he and his son had a deep conversation about many topics that concern parents and children, like drug use, heartache, etc. So he brought the lyrics into class. I remember discussing Child of Vision in particular, as a class exercise interpreting the meaning behind the lyrics. Just like you guys are doing in this reaction. I bought the album the next day. Yes, my 8th grade English teacher introduced me to Supertramp, and, consequently, Mary Jane too.

I love the way Lex reacts to songs that I like as well. She is always looking at Brad and smiling hoping he will like the song, but usually he does not…

Supertramp often uses contrasts in the way that their lyrics and music fit together. The album, Breakfast in America, which this song is from, is loaded with them. To me this song has a light hearted feel and speaks about a guy enjoying the rock star lifestyle. The guitar solo at the end has an emotional feel to me and provides the counterpoint.

Supertramp are great! I have a few albums of theirs. They never disappoint. Even in the quietest moments is my favourite album. It`s also a fantastic song.

This song just sounds like a happy, upbeat rock and roll song to me, nothing out of the ordinary as far as classic rock goes. Although it had its uniqueness as well. Its own flavor. Interesting to see how different people view things from different perspectives according to their past experience and environment.

Goodbye Stranger's such a sweet, tuneful song for most of it, and slowly morphs into sort of an Indian raga psychedelic rockin' jam, at the end eh? Supertramp are a deep well. "Bloody Well Right" "Dreamer" "Give a Little Bit" "Breakfast In America" "Oh Darling" "Child of Vision" "It's Raining Again" "The Logical Song" "Take the Long Way Home"

This song will forever be entwined in my adolescent years, specifically the summer of ‘79, with bittersweet memories of a (really cute) guy I met one day during summer break then never saw again until about 30 years later and he was, and is, happily married to a girl I went to school with. This song was released that same summer and any time I have heard it since then it sends me reeling back to that summer and those “lovesick” feelings ❤💔❤️💔

Man i relate to this song, reminds me of 2010, when a girl contacted me to say, you're my DAD.
Oh and by the way? You have 3 grandchildren... Suddenly i got old, that'll teach me for bed hopping about the place.
70's & 80's were a different time indeed. Willy Nelson said it, 'to all the girls i've loved before'.... LOL

Ha, loved your reaction Lex. It's funny, Supertramp is a band I don't actively seek out to listen to but I bought this album in high school when several of the songs on it were on the radio all the time and I played the hell out of it and then at one point I got burned out on it and just never returned. But that was really great hearing this again. And I think you're right; to me it's a very uplifting song about moving on, starting a new phase in your life, that kind of thing. I could totally see it as putting on your makeup and getting your energy up. And yeah, the Mary and Jane references sure do evoke weed, but of course it can mean lots of different things at the same time. If in fact he intended that as at least partially a tongue-in-cheek reference, still it would certainly be in the context of, I'm not going to do that again for a while, I'm going to keep moving every day and not just sit there stoned. If you haven't already, please please please check out the three other big hits from this iconic album. I've never met someone that Supertramp doesn't grow on oh, especially these songs. This is from Wikipedia:
Breakfast in America is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Supertramp, released by A&M Records on 29 March 1979. It was recorded in 1978 at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles. It spawned four US Billboard hit singles: "The Logical Song" (No. 6), "Goodbye Stranger" (No. 15), "Take the Long Way Home" (No. 10) and "Breakfast in America" (No. 62).[A] In the UK, "The Logical Song" and the title track were both top 10 hits, the only two the group had in their native country.[5]

the amazing theme is no guitars or heavy synth (it's there but not dominant), the pianos , the keyboard work is what pulls the song together. i still remember them as the only rock 'POP' group to use 2 grand pianos but now you understand why they're so good
