"Ceremony" is a song by Joy Division, released as New Order's debut single in 1981. The song and its B-side, "In a Lonely Place", were written and recorded as Joy Division prior to the death of Ian Curtis. Both were re-recorded and carried over to Joy Division's re-formation under the name New Order.
Lyrics
This is why events unnerve me
They find it all, a different story
Notice whom for wheels are turning
Turn again and turn towards this time
All she asks is the strength to hold me
Then again the same old story
World will travel, oh so quickly
Travel first and lean towards this time
Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time
Watching her, these things she said
The times she cried
Too frail to wake this time
Oh I'll break them down, no mercy shown
Heaven knows, it's got to be this time
Avenues all lined with trees
Picture me and then you start watching
Watching forever
Forever
Watching love grow, forever
Letting me know, forever

I'm very blessed to have seen this Amazing band under all 3 names..
Warsaw, J.D. New Order.
That’s awesome
Holy shit, you saw them when they were Warsaw? Wow, that's some serious street cred, my friend.
U certainly are. All 3, hats off
Peter Hook and the Light !
This song is a feast to the ears. It sounds so modern yet nostalgic, joyful yet melancholy all at once. They are an important band.
beautifullly said
My fav song of all time
Facts
Greatest guitar band in the world
Love them listen to them every nite in bed before l go to sleep
Superb Mr. Sumner...❤️Ian would be proud..
I was at this gig. Brilliant night. One of my favourite songs of the night.
What year was this?
Please make up Bernard and Peter … want this song at my funeral , a truly ethereal band and song
Ditto, this is on my fuck it list for when I kick the bucket.
agree, please
Only two words necessary here; FUCKING BRILLIANT!...
Greatest transition song from one band becoming another. Ian lives through this song. 🪦 Ian
Put a good band before a great audience, and they’ll be very good. Put a great band before a Glasgow audience, and this is what you get.
This to me was New Order at their best. AWESOME
Saw them 3 times that year
forever watching love grow

Brilliant band. Just read Steve Morris Record Play Pause. Excellent read for Joy Division/New Order fans, drummers, and all music lovers. Steve's wit makes this an excellent read

Hey Kevin... You are definitiv blessed! I never saw the different set ups in West-Berlin but listened to them like crazy... Anyway in 2014 I went to 'Peter Hook and the Light' in Berlin and listened the first time LIVE to songs from J.D. What a concert!!!!
This one should be a great Joy Division single!
Salford's finest
EPIC period!
I go to see Peter Hook and the Light every chance I get, Peter and his crew have come through my town at least 6 times since this show in 2010. Peter plays shows based on albums, New Order, Joy Division, his own new stuff, then mixes in other stuff to keep it interesting. Mr Hook feels that Ian would have wanted his lyrics/music played live, the other New Order guys never felt comfortable with that,. I heard an interview with Peter and he said that is part of why he left. They won't play any Joy Division (that is fine, it's their choice and their feelings), but Peter wants to celebrate that music by playing it, it is a tribute to Ian by the people who he meant the most to and vice versa.

Awesome. Hail New Order.
I'm sad Peter's gone. The new N.O. album is like reliving the techno experience of Yaz or Yazoo, some bits of a ha, a tad of David Bowie, and other mixed. I want to hear the "temptation", "regret", "Blue Monday". "Crystal" New Order. I'll still listen, I want to, it's part of what I've gotten into for 3 decades on... So, More please, but... I LOVE CEREMONY!!
❤
Best version of this song live!
Always be the best song by JD and NO. Have 3 versions on vinyl.
Se nota el sentimiento Bernard, después de todo fue una de la últimas canciones de Joy Division.
Oh yes, and he will never get over it. The last line he changed to "Forever where did he go".
Brilliant!
When I'm dead bury me to this song @@@
Que bien conservó su voz
Wow ,slike joy division ,good day xx
GLESGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
✌
Ian Curtis wrote this right? Makes it even more meaningful.
H O L Y F U C K
No Hook, no Order
why wont they come to america these guys are stillgreat!!!!!
U got ur wish man they’re coming soon!!
Anybody else notice Bernard mess up the lyrics? He sang "Avenues all lined with trees. . ." twice instead of "Watching her, these things she said. . . " Still great.
Yes he did on the first verse
They've split up for good this time.
no
The worse thing is:
1) New Order live without Hook is like a car without wheels; saw a Ceremony live without Hook, and it was incredibily bad... the song even looses expression!
2) Hook cannot go round "attempting" to sing Joy Division songs. The only song he ever managed was "Dreams Never End", but he only got away with it because it's fucking good song.
Kinda sad...like they making a rock anthem....
