I got myself a pair of Speedgoat 5's after watching this and the full review, and just went for my first run in them today. Absolutely love them! It was 8km on mostly hard-packed gravel with lots of loose rock areas, uphills and downhills, and the shoes performed excellent.
@@YosefElgart it's got Vibram megagrip rubber on the outsole so grip on wet rocks is brilliant! Megagrip is probably the grip best rubber you can have on a trail shoe 👍

I recently purchased a pair of Speed Goat 5. I have done 60km and 21km trail runs on them. Wore thick merino wool socks. During my downhill, I found that my ankle joint consistently made contact with the higher collar design found on the Speed Goat 5 compared to my Speed Goat 4. Over the period of a long run, I started to experience ankle pain underneath the joint. A problem that didn't occur when I wore the Speed Goat 4.
That's a shame to hear Parker! This can sometimes happen with running shoes. I had exactly the same thing in the adidas Agravic, where the ankle collar dug into my ankle on uneven ground. Interesting that you a problem with the higher ankle collar. I picked up a pair of the SG5's yesterday and went out on a quick 6 mile run after work last night and had a similar experience. At one point during my run I did notice a bit of an ankle rub that I have never experienced in my SG4"s. It wasn't significant and it seem to go away during the later portion of the run. I remember thinking at the time that it might be an issue on longer trail runs. I hope that's not the case, but we'll have to wait and see. As I mentioned it wasn't that significant and I absolutely loved the comfort and ride that I had outside of the brief period that I experienced the ankle rub.
It's been a while since I've been following the channel - truly exceptional stuff. Wanted to wait until I actually got my hands on a pair of the SG5 - and oh boy - these will surely usher me in the hybrid type I've been wondering about recently. Am coming from Clifton 8s, as a road jogger of sorts 😅 - but really wanted to venture a little on the rough paths as well, and figured that Clinton wouldn't cut it. Finding these at 40% off really felt like a steal. Kudos to your stellar work 👍
SG4 is my goto shoe and that Zennor Loop is my goto route. Now that you've invited everyone down to run on MY coast path I'm glad you also told them to shut the gates - so many people don't !! Oh, and my SG4 laces also frequently need a retie, normally at just about that same field too.

Watched yesterday inspired me to have a walk of the route today , not walked this path in a while , always in awe of the Arc runners when walking the coast path used by them . My new Inov8 rocklight boots gave great grip .. keep up the great work. Forgot to say the inland path is part of the tinners way

Just got my SG 5’s ( only took 5 days from order to arrival 👍🏼). Totally agree with your assessment. Already feel “broke in” after only a 3 mile run. My only comment is the tongue is a little short if you have to do runners knot.(my right foot is a smidge shorter than my left). Also a tish more padding on the tongue would to grand. As mentioned from previous comments, I loved the SG3 and didnt´t jump into the 4s, but have heard so much good things about the 5s combining things from the Evo and learnt experience from the other versions. Another option for me to consider this year when looking for a new trail shoe. Maybe not right away but later in the year. Great video and scenery

Not a Hoka Speedgoat fan but I love how he throughly tests his shoes. This is a huge help for me when shoe hunting. Gives me the confidence to spend the money on a high quality trail running 🏃♀️ shoe
Just picked up a pair from Ravanel in Chamonix. The upper actually feels less restrictive to me than the 4 thanks to the fabric material. I went up a size which may help as well - looking forward to getting them out on the trails !

I hope the material doesn't stretch to much because I'm happy with the fit 🤔 I'll be getting another 40 or 50 miles in the shoe and then I'll be back with a full in-depth review and well see what happens 👍👎

It's like you made the video for me! Love the Zennor loop when on holiday but normally do it the other way round, smash the technical on fresh legs then enjoy the easier miles on the return leg. I'm also looking at SG5 vs Salomon pulsar trail pro for UTMB this year so will look forward to your long term review of how they perform.

Loving this video! Doing what you do best, Loyd 👍 and definitely no apologies needed when you are showcasing routes like this 😍. Sounds like the 5s have restored your faith in the Speedgoats 😀 Hopefully you can get the lacing sorted. Always good when shoes run great, fresh out of the box. Recycled fabrics a bonus too! Never had the 4s, but I loved my SG2s until the toe box split. SG3s still going strong although I have fallen out of love with them over the last few months. Must admit I’ve been a bit Bambi on ice on muddy trails in both 2s and 3s at times, so the lugs on the 5 sound like a good improvement.

I also had the Speedgoat 3, but always had blisters in the front of my foot after long runs. Since I started running in Altras and Topo´s, I can no longer run or walk in tight shoes. It's a shame that the main manufacturers don't use wide toe boxes in their shoes
It's tricky Thomas because everyone's foot shape is so different. If all the brands made wide fitting shoes what would runners do that have narrow feet? Great VLOG today! The new focus on your equipment and quality shows. I've been running in the Ultra Glides which I just retired after 500 miles. I have my first 100 mile mountain race later this year and am more interested in keeping my old knees and feet happy, than going fast. I'm interested to hear your opinion. The Peregrines aren't built for that distance. Maybe the new XODUS? Take care.

Obviously you could use the Peregrines for 100 miles but its a bit to stripped back for that kind of distance for me. I did the Zennor loop in November after watching your video where you did it. Yes you could say the coastal half is challenging…. 😰 I did it in SG4’s actually. I think I’m going to get the 5’s judging by this first impression review. You can guarantee one thing, they will sell out in the more popular sizes. Great video BTW 👍🏼

I have got two pairs. Absolutely love them! My favourite shoe of all time is the EVO speedgoat. They are pretty similar! My evo speedgoats did over 1000km, so very durable. My only issue at all, was very steep downhill bombing. Toes slid a bit forward and hit the hard toe overlay. I think I can sort it but using the top eyelet to lock it down a bit tighter. Heaps of hill work was fine. Only an issue on the very steepest decents.
This is what might make me finally try an Altra, I slid horribly on SG5 but never did on SG4, plus the lack of tongue isn’t worth it to me because if you roll forward hard enough you could tweak your Achilles’ tendon

Great review. Stunning scenery. Hey I'm a big fan of the speedgoat 4 but unfortunately I turned an ankle just two weeks ago while hiking the Camino Portuguese. Actually half a small fracture in my ankle some sideline for a month or so. Deciding whether to abandon the higher stack height hokas, but it looks like you thought that the ankle stability was a little better in the speedgoat 5. Really love the cushioning of the hoka SGs, but just a little apprehensive that the stack height May have contributed to my ankle fracture. Would love your thoughts. Keep up the great work. Glad you enjoyed the video Brent. The new Speedgoat 5 definitely feels a bit more stable underfoot when you compare it to the 4's. Unfortunately you'll always loose connection and ground feel with a deeply cushioned midsole. You will always feel more stable with less cushioning. The best thing to do is build up strength and stability in the lower leg if you want to use very cushioned shoe 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊
I've had the SG, 2,3 and 4 and I do agree that the 3 was the best. (I went through 3 pairs), I didn't find the gulf between the 3 and 4 as pronounced as you did Loyd. I do find the 4 has a slightly stiffer upper/overlay at the area by the lower lace eyelets, this causes a bit more creasing but overall I've liked the 4.
I think the 3's have been the most popular version of the Speedgoat to date Ian. It was just down to the fit of the 4's, it just didn't work as well for my foot shape. It wasn't terrible but I think where I'd enjoyed the 3's so much it just left me a bit dissapointed 😕 Thanks for watching and supporting the channel as always its appreciated 🙏
Would love to see how these perform downhill on loose shale and gravel. What goes up must come down and the weaker the sneak, the weaker the body becomes. Looks a stunning trail.

I would like to know what was intention to design so much narrow toebox, I have worn many shoes, wouldn't say my foot is wide, never had any issue with any other. Also finding laces quite short to lock my ankle properly because stack height is bigger and ankle part is quite low. I wear Clifton 8 for road runs and it's such a great shoe, if they just make the same but with vibram or similar for trail.
They are both good trail shoes Alan but they are also very different. I'd probably use the Peregrines on shorter, faster more technical runs. Where as the Speedgoat s are perfect for the long stuff 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

Fab film old boy. Do you think its the upper stretching of it is the laces. Some of the other reviews are saying the upper is too stretchy. This could be my Hardmoors 110 shoe in may. Will be getting it in a size 10.5 wide like my SG4 wide.

The uppers fail at about a year, no matter what. Same for the 4s. they deliberately do not add reinforcement where they tear, on the outside of the little toe area. It's all about selling you the next pair.
BTW, it would be great if in your reviews you could do a comparison with other shoes. It's one thing to know if a shoe is great or not, but is it greater or notter vs the others. That's what really can will help our search for good shoes. For example as somebody mentioned below, how do you compare this vs the Peregrine as a long range race shoe, or the Ultra Glide (which I currently run in alongside the Salomon Ultra 3s). Keep up the good work!

Hi, hoping someone can help. I have got a pair of these shoes in sales. Done a park run in them and felt good. Then tried a 5 mile light trail run today and had to cut it short as the internal mesh elastic bit on the tongue has rubbed a blister on the inside of the arm h of my foot. Can this mesh be re over or is there anything I can do.
The advantage is the Speedgoat definitely offers a much more cushioned midsole if you like that kind of thing. Where as you'd get a lot more connection and ground feel in the Peregrine. It really comes down to what you prefer Jung, they're both good shoes 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
Great content as always Lloyd, Hoka have just restocked most sizes (not the wide edition) in one of the colour ways on they’re site, but having read & watched several other reviews I’m unsure wether to buy my usual size or go up half a size as people have pointed out that the new upper material has slightly more give & stretches so you’re good to go in you’re usual size, is half a size up still working for you Lloyd? I've always wore a uk10 in the Speedgoats Scott and the uk10 feels just right in the SG5'S as well. Obviously I've only run around 25 miles in them so far but the fit feels good. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊
So this is strange… I ordered two pairs of SG5, different colors. The green pair weighed in at 11.3oz while the blue pair was 12.0oz, both size 12, what gives?
How was the width? I tried the 4 in wide and still didn’t get on with them. I use Torrent and Clifton in a size up for the width, but find the speedgoat normally too narrow. Great video of the loop. Recognise a lot of it from Atlantic coast challenge

It's a very different trail shoe compared to a Peregrine. The Speedgoat 5's are deeply cushioned so a lot softer underfoot than a Peregrine. Obviously you'd have a lot more connection to the trails in a Peregrine but not as much cushioning. I'll probably be using both shoes quite a lot Adam, maybe the Peregrines for shorter more technical runs and the Speedgoats for longer stuff. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊

I personally prefer the SG5's, it's got a lot more cushioning and a better outsole in my opinion 👍 Obviously running shoes are very personal things and it's always good to go and try some different brands on to see what works best for your footshape. Hoka running shoes have quite a lot of medial arch shape to the midsole Sarah. I would recommend trying some Speedgoats if you can to see if it works for your footshape 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

I just can't get my head around why you'd put that whale tail on the back of a trail shoe. If the aim is the relieve Achilles pressure surely just not have it?
I think that i want to get out of the hype train! I ran 2 races in them and -at least to me- a think that the hype it's worth it. First of all its unacceptable for a trail shoe to have this kind of heel colar. Its a magnet of small rocks that goes inside the shoe. Other than that i find it very dificult to get a proper fit in them, they seem big and loose. On top of all that, with just 60km in them there are parts on the outsole that tearing apart. In overal the shoe dont feel much durable to me.

It sounds like the shoe doesn't work for your foot shape? 🤔 I'd definitely get in touch with Hoka if the shoe is breaking down already because that's not good enough. Speedgoats and saucony seem to fight for the title of the worst uppers in the industry. I understand why they are doing that for mass consumer, but ill stick with la sportivs(for more technical) and topo(for parks), even though hokas are really comfy. New shoes every 300 miles for sgs (as foam degrades) is already bad enough, but if they meet snowpack or actual scree, their uppers fall apart in days.

I got myself a pair of Speedgoat 5's after watching this and the full review, and just went for my first run in them today. Absolutely love them! It was 8km on mostly hard-packed gravel with lots of loose rock areas, uphills and downhills, and the shoes performed excellent.

I recently purchased a pair of Speed Goat 5. I have done 60km and 21km trail runs on them. Wore thick merino wool socks. During my downhill, I found that my ankle joint consistently made contact with the higher collar design found on the Speed Goat 5 compared to my Speed Goat 4. Over the period of a long run, I started to experience ankle pain underneath the joint. A problem that didn't occur when I wore the Speed Goat 4.
That's a shame to hear Parker! This can sometimes happen with running shoes. I had exactly the same thing in the adidas Agravic, where the ankle collar dug into my ankle on uneven ground. Interesting that you a problem with the higher ankle collar. I picked up a pair of the SG5's yesterday and went out on a quick 6 mile run after work last night and had a similar experience. At one point during my run I did notice a bit of an ankle rub that I have never experienced in my SG4"s. It wasn't significant and it seem to go away during the later portion of the run. I remember thinking at the time that it might be an issue on longer trail runs. I hope that's not the case, but we'll have to wait and see. As I mentioned it wasn't that significant and I absolutely loved the comfort and ride that I had outside of the brief period that I experienced the ankle rub.
It's been a while since I've been following the channel - truly exceptional stuff. Wanted to wait until I actually got my hands on a pair of the SG5 - and oh boy - these will surely usher me in the hybrid type I've been wondering about recently. Am coming from Clifton 8s, as a road jogger of sorts 😅 - but really wanted to venture a little on the rough paths as well, and figured that Clinton wouldn't cut it. Finding these at 40% off really felt like a steal.

SG4 is my goto shoe and that Zennor Loop is my goto route. Now that you've invited everyone down to run on MY coast path I'm glad you also told them to shut the gates - so many people don't !! Oh, and my SG4 laces also frequently need a retie, normally at just about that same field too.

Watched yesterday inspired me to have a walk of the route today , not walked this path in a while , always in awe of the Arc runners when walking the coast path used by them . My new Inov8 rocklight boots gave great grip .. keep up the great work. Forgot to say the inland path is part of the tinners way

Just got my SG 5’s ( only took 5 days from order to arrival 👍🏼). Totally agree with your assessment. Already feel “broke in” after only a 3 mile run. My only comment is the tongue is a little short if you have to do runners knot.(my right foot is a smidge shorter than my left). Also a tish more padding on the tongue would to grand. Good to see you got such a positive first feedback. As mentioned from previous comments, I loved the SG3 and didnt´t jump into the 4s, but have heard so much good things about the 5s combining things from the Evo and learnt experience from the other versions.
Another option for me to consider this year when looking for a new trail shoe. Maybe not right away but later in the year.

Not a Hoka Speedgoat fan but I love how he throughly tests his shoes. This is a huge help for me when shoe hunting. Gives me the confidence to spend the money on a high quality trail running 🏃♀️ shoe
Just picked up a pair from Ravanel in Chamonix. The upper actually feels less restrictive to me than the 4 thanks to the fabric material. I went up a size which may help as well - looking forward to getting them out on the trails !

I wouldn't say it's a wide shoe. I'd say my foot shape is pretty average in width and the SG5's fit well. I hope the material doesn't stretch to much because I'm happy with the fit 🤔
I'll be getting another 40 or 50 miles in the shoe and then I'll be back with a full in-depth review and well see what happens 👍👎

It's like you made the video for me! Love the Zennor loop when on holiday but normally do it the other way round, smash the technical on fresh legs then enjoy the easier miles on the return leg. I'm also looking at SG5 vs Salomon pulsar trail pro for UTMB this year so will look forward to your long term review of how they perform.

Loving this video! Doing what you do best, Loyd 👍 and definitely no apologies needed when you are showcasing routes like this 😍. Sounds like the 5s have restored your faith in the Speedgoats 😀 Hopefully you can get the lacing sorted. Always good when shoes run great, fresh out of the box. Recycled fabrics a bonus too! Never had the 4s, but I loved my SG2s until the toe box split. SG3s still going strong although I have fallen out of love with them over the last few months. Must admit I’ve been a bit Bambi on ice on muddy trails in both 2s and 3s at times, so the lugs on the 5 sound like a good improvement.

Great review again Lloyd. Hope the build quality is better than the four? My SG 4 ripped at the bottom of the eyelet chain after 200 miles very disappointing 😞. The Zennor loop is my local Sunday run always amazing summer or winter. Keep up the good work

I also had the Speedgoat 3, but always had blisters in the front of my foot after long runs.
Since I started running in Altras and Topo´s, I can no longer run or walk in tight shoes.
It's a shame that the main manufacturers don't use wide toe boxes in their shoes
It's tricky Thomas because everyone's foot shape is so different. If all the brands made wide fitting shoes what would runners do that have narrow feet? I think it's just about finding a brand that works best for you and it sounds like you have 👍

Great VLOG today! The new focus on your equipment and quality shows. I've been running in the Ultra Glides which I just retired after 500 miles. I have my first 100 mile mountain race later this year and am more interested in keeping my old knees and feet happy, than going fast. I'm interested to hear your opinion. The Peregrines aren't built for that distance. Maybe the new XODUS? Take care.

Obviously you could use the Peregrines for 100 miles but its a bit to stripped back for that kind of distance for me. The new Xodus Ultra would definitely be in the running, I think it'll be a good shoe for the long stuff 👍

I did the Zennor loop in November after watching your video where you did it. Yes you could say the coastal half is challenging…. 😰 I did it in SG4’s actually. I think I’m going to get the 5’s judging by this first impression review. You can guarantee one thing, they will sell out in the more popular sizes.

I have got two pairs. Absolutely love them! My favourite shoe of all time is the EVO speedgoat. They are pretty similar! My evo speedgoats did over 1000km, so very durable. My only issue at all, was very steep downhill bombing. Toes slid a bit forward and hit the hard toe overlay. I think I can sort it but using the top eyelet to lock it down a bit tighter. Heaps of hill work was fine. Only an issue on the very steepest decents.
This is what might make me finally try an Altra, I slid horribly on SG5 but never did on SG4, plus the lack of tongue isn’t worth it to me because if you roll forward hard enough you could tweak your Achilles’ tendon

Great review. Stunning scenery. Hey I'm a big fan of the speedgoat 4 but unfortunately I turned an ankle just two weeks ago while hiking the Camino Portuguese. Actually half a small fracture in my ankle some sideline for a month or so. Deciding whether to abandon the higher stack height hokas, but it looks like you thought that the ankle stability was a little better in the speedgoat 5. Really love the cushioning of the hoka SGs, but just a little apprehensive that the stack height May have contributed to my ankle fracture. Would love your thoughts. Keep up the great work. Glad you enjoyed the video Brent. The new Speedgoat 5 definitely feels a bit more stable underfoot when you compare it to the 4's. Unfortunately you'll always loose connection and ground feel with a deeply cushioned midsole. You will always feel more stable with less cushioning. The best thing to do is build up strength and stability in the lower leg if you want to use very cushioned shoe 👍

I've had the SG, 2,3 and 4 and I do agree that the 3 was the best. (I went through 3 pairs), I didn't find the gulf between the 3 and 4 as pronounced as you did Loyd. I do find the 4 has a slightly stiffer upper/overlay at the area by the lower lace eyelets, this causes a bit more creasing but overall I've liked the 4.
I think the 3's have been the most popular version of the Speedgoat to date Ian. It was just down to the fit of the 4's, it just didn't work as well for my foot shape. It wasn't terrible but I think where I'd enjoyed the 3's so much it just left me a bit dissapointed 😕

Would love to see how these perform downhill on loose shale and gravel. What goes up must come down and the weaker the sneak, the weaker the body becomes. Looks a stunning trail.
Unfortunately I don't have a lot of loose shale to run on in Cornwall so it's hard to say Gavin 🤔

I would like to know what was intention to design so much narrow toebox, I have worn many shoes, wouldn't say my foot is wide, never had any issue with any other. Also finding laces quite short to lock my ankle properly because stack height is bigger and ankle part is quite low. I wear Clifton 8 for road runs and it's such a great shoe, if they just make the same but with vibram or similar for trail.

They are both good trail shoes Alan but they are also very different. I'd probably use the Peregrines on shorter, faster more technical runs. Where as the Speedgoat s are perfect for the long stuff 👍

If you use the last hole it eliminates the shoelace issue.. at least it did for me.
I'll give it a go but I'm not a fan of using the top eyelets, in the past it has caused me issues across the top of my foot 🤔

Fab film old boy. Do you think its the upper stretching of it is the laces. Some of the other reviews are saying the upper is too stretchy. This could be my Hardmoors 110 shoe in may. Will be getting it in a size 10.5 wide like my SG4 wide.

The uppers fail at about a year, no matter what. Same for the 4s. they deliberately do not add reinforcement where they tear, on the outside of the little toe area. It's all about selling you the next pair.
love the shoes, unfortunately mine started peeling on the outsole. hoka sent me an exchange.

BTW, it would be great if in your reviews you could do a comparison with other shoes. It's one thing to know if a shoe is great or not, but is it greater or notter vs the others. That's what really can will help our search for good shoes. For example as somebody mentioned below, how do you compare this vs the Peregrine as a long range race shoe, or the Ultra Glide (which I currently run in alongside the Salomon Ultra 3s).

Hi, hoping someone can help. I have got a pair of these shoes in sales. Done a park run in them and felt good. Then tried a 5 mile light trail run today and had to cut it short as the internal mesh elastic bit on the tongue has rubbed a blister on the inside of the arm h of my foot. Can this mesh be re over or is there anything I can do.
What is the advantage over the peregrine? What is the disadvantage it gives up to the peregrine?
The advantage is the Speedgoat definitely offers a much more cushioned midsole if you like that kind of thing. Where as you'd get a lot more connection and ground feel in the Peregrine. It really comes down to what you prefer Jung, they're both good shoes 👍

Great content as always Lloyd, Hoka have just restocked most sizes (not the wide edition) in one of the colour ways on they’re site, but having read & watched several other reviews I’m unsure wether to buy my usual size or go up half a size as people have pointed out that the new upper material has slightly more give & stretches so you’re good to go in you’re usual size, is half a size up still working for you Lloyd? I've always wore a uk10 in the Speedgoats Scott and the uk10 feels just right in the SG5'S as well. Obviously I've only run around 25 miles in them so far but the fit feels good. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊
So this is strange… I ordered two pairs of SG5, different colors. The green pair weighed in at 11.3oz while the blue pair was 12.0oz, both size 12, what gives?
That is very strange Marek? You didn't leave the paper in one pair did you! 😂 That's a big difference in weight if they're the same model and size? 🤔
How was the width? I tried the 4 in wide and still didn’t get on with them. I use Torrent and Clifton in a size up for the width, but find the speedgoat normally too narrow. Great video of the loop. Recognise a lot of it from Atlantic coast challenge
I don't think it's any wider than the 4's Paul so you might still struggle? 🤔

Hi Loyd, how does this compare to the Peregrine 12? Does this have a rock plate in it? Do you think it needs it? Will this take over as your go to trail shoe?
It's a very different trail shoe compared to a Peregrine. The Speedgoat 5's are deeply cushioned so a lot softer underfoot than a Peregrine. Obviously you'd have a lot more connection to the trails in a Peregrine but not as much cushioning. I'll probably be using both shoes quite a lot Adam, maybe the Peregrines for shorter more technical runs and the Speedgoats for longer stuff. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊

I personally prefer the SG5's, it's got a lot more cushioning and a better outsole in my opinion 👍

Hoka running shoes have quite a lot of medial arch shape to the midsole Sarah. I would recommend trying some Speedgoats if you can to see if it works for your footshape 👍

I just can't get my head around why you'd put that whale tail on the back of a trail shoe. If the aim is the relieve Achilles pressure surely just not have it?

I think that i want to get out of the hype train!
I ran 2 races in them and -at least to me- a think that the hype it's worth it. First of all its unacceptable for a trail shoe to have this kind of heel colar. Its a magnet of small rocks that goes inside the shoe. Other than that i find it very dificult to get a proper fit in them, they seem big and loose. On top of all that, with just 60km in them there are parts on the outsole that tearing apart. In overal the shoe dont feel much durable to me.

Speedgoats and saucony seem to fight for the title of the worst uppers in the industry. I understand why they are doing that for mass consumer, but ill stick with la sportivs(for more technical) and topo(for parks), even though hokas are really comfy. New shoes every 300 miles for sgs (as foam degrades) is already bad enough, but if they meet snowpack or actual scree, their uppers fall apart in days.
