What he doesn't mention is that for the final two seasons (rings) including that win over the West, Baylor, Chamberlain Lakers Russell was both the coach and a player. Auerbach retired and named Russell his replacement saying there was no one else that could do the job. In his NBA career, his team failed to win the championship 2 time. His rookie season and his first year as a head coach. His first year as a head coach, he also got injured playing. Each generation faces different challenges. Playing not just as a black man, but a leader of the Civil Rights movement during the 50s and 60s... I don't know that anyone in todays game could do what this man did. Certainly, no one else during his time could.

  • @HercuLync
    @HercuLync 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

He also fails to mention that many of the hall of famers on the Celtics team were having mediocre careers before playing with Russell. Russell made everyone he played with better. Jerry West said that Wilt wouldn't conform to other players, the other players had to conform to him. Russell made everyone around him better and everyone including the players on his team knew it. That's why he was able to be player and coach. The rest of his team respected and admired him. They knew that he was going to make them the best they could be because he had already been doing it as a player. Russell is the GOAT.

Watch series. This is the one I am going pick. He did everything to win and sacrificed a lot of personal life in a big civil rights era era. In his last year - people forget he was both the coach and the leader on the floor at the same time. Nobody that I can think of could do that. Possibly Lebron is trending in that direction, but Russell created (w Auerbach) the modern game.

Notice how many times when he blocks the ball it goes to a Celtic player? He never slammed it 5 rows deep and screamed just to give the ball back to the opposition , his blocks started the Celts break and it was beautiful to watch

Bill Russell is the personification of greatness. He is honestly possibly the greatest leader in NBA history. Russell didn’t win because he was the fastest or the strongest or the most physically dominant. He won because he had the heart of a champion. As a child I remember seeing Russell on TV, speaking with such eloquence. I’ve always looked up to him since then and lean in when I hear him speak. He was a Lion among men. As I’ve said before he was an old soul and that is very rare in this day and age. The object of chess is to win, the object of basketball is to win. Stat lovers beware of the stat trap. Why? Because the foundation of champions is the psyche weathered tough by experience (old souls have and advantage here in this realm). But then again, some of those playoff Russell stats are absolutely stunning. He is my starting center of my first team all time: Jordan, Russell, Duncan, Bird, Magic. Another thing to think about: people sometimes say Russell would be too small for todays game-that makes me laugh ‘cus take a look at by way of example, Scottie Pippen how slight his frame was and how dominant he was-and to me Russell was a taller, smarter, and more agile defensive monster than Scottie. By the way, lets reverse the usual look at by-gone eras-lets say Russell, and Bird came to the modern game with their old soul intelligence and worked out with modern trainers and modern practices with all the analytics- I argue that these players would absolutely kick effing ass in todays game precisely because of their mental approach. The approach of lions who know that they’ll do whatever it takes to win. The approach of a life of experience-deep knowing behind the eyes. Would a master World War II sniper be able to handle todays wars? You bet your ass he would.

Eh, Brah! GREAT VIDEO! I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE!
I'm old..I went to college in Boston in 1985 and I saw Bird play at the OLD GARDEN back in the early 90s, Parrish, too..I truly believe that Larry Bird and Bill Russell are the same player, in 2 different BODIES, in 2 different ERAS, with 2 different SITUATIONS.. but they think and win the same way. Russell obviously more. (I also think that Tim Duncan falls into this level of consideration).
    I LIKE TIME!
Bill Russell, and Red Auerbach, INVENTED THE FAST BREAK!
That means that they played defense, and HOWEVER Bill defended it..they had plays drawn up for an immediate drive.
He often rebounded the ball and led the fastbreak himself..again, OFTEN resulting in HIM scoring..
~they kept NO RECORDS of blocks or rebounds at this time..and he STILL CRUSHES EVERYONE.
    Bill Russell begat Kareem. ~skyhook?
I am also VERY HAPPY/SURPRISED that this video shows the horrific treatment he suffered in Boston, as HE WON THEM CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER CHAMPIONSHIP! I'm obviously opinionated about this topic, yeah?

It genuinely pisses me off when I see people say that their was no competition in the 60’s. But, I know they’re ignorant so I just don’t give them the time of day.
Sure that competition compared to today doesn’t look great. But like was mentioned in the video, if you compare the greats of the past to the current era, of course the current one will look better. You have to look at the context of the era.
That being said, the competition by comparison was actually BETTER back then. Because the league was so small at the time. The best player in the world were all crammed together into 8 teams. Imagine the league today if there were 8 teams, and only the best players made it, every team would be a super team.

Matt it's not your fault for being born too late, and I respect the fact that you're willing to investigate. What's hard to understand today is the advantages, science, wealth, and opportunity that did not exist back when Russell ruled. Nutrition, training, and film study weren't available in his time. It was all about wins and losses. Bill Russell made his team better, he filled in the gaps, he elevated those around him, he was like Tom Brady with a better vertical leap, and a similar refusal to lose. I always figured that Russell was a Dennis Rodman or Ben Wallace like player. If you were smart as coach, you'd see what he could give you against the opposing best player--possibly from C-SG(all 4 positions). And, if the PG was a slower player than blazing(like Magic, Stockton, or Kidd), you'd try him there defensively, too! To me, this would be his value; if you had a fantasy team and could have them go head-to-head with another fantasy team, he'd be your hole plugger where you needed a very versatile defender and he'd give you high octane energy play, as well.
Can you imagine getting him in a low round of a fantasy draft, because he was seen as a Rodman or Wallace when they were older?! Actually, he's king Rodman! But, his value would be in being able to guard a team's best player at a number of positions: given their height and that they'd be easier to keep track of than a blazing PG, I'd even try him on Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, McGrady, Vince Carter, Bird, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Drexler, Durant, Reggie Miller, Wilkins, Gervin, Erving, Allen, Barkley, Malone, Garnett, Webber, Duncan, Hill, Kawhi, Pierce, Thompson, King, Ellis, Mullin, Maravich(Russell was super athletic), etc. That's how valuable he was! I think he'd slow down all of those players significantly; all a coach would need to do was trust him and allow him to try; he did a great job on Wilt at times, but you have to realize that the problem there were both size and freakish strength. And, with others, this would not be a problem and Shaq was not as good as Wilt. Jordan once selected Olajuwon for his all-time team, but he should have also gotten this guy--as Michael was an iso player that could do other things well also. As an ISO player, you need players that are unselfish. In addition, he wouldn't have to worry about Russell("Tayshawn Princing") guarding him.

How unique was Bill Russell? After his first season Auerbach took him aside and said, "Do you know your the best player in this league?" (He was like 7th in MVP voting that year. Cousy won it.) And Russell said "I know." He never let it bother him.
Auerbach told him he didn't know how Russell did the things he did, so he wasn't going to try to correct him or coach him out of that.
What Auerbach did too is educate the media on how great Russell was and the guy who scores the most points is not the best guy on the team. Auerbach started teaching them how to see the subtleties of the game. Also when Cousy would get injured the Celtics would keep on winning. But when Russell got injured they would go on a losing streak. Which is why Auerbach wanted Russell. Cousy had been on the Celtics since 51, but they were never champs because they lacked defense and rebounding. Auerbach drafter Russell without ever really seeing him because he was on the West Coast, but heard he was just the guy that Auerbach described as who he needed.

This is it. If you're on a team with Bill Russell and you're going up against a team WITHOUT Bill Russell chances are you're going to win. I don't care who is on that other team: MJ, Wilt, Curry, West, and Magic YOU WILL PROBABLY WIN. And if you go into a 7 game series against a team like...the 92 Dream Team, YOU WILL WIN. BECAUSE RUSSELL NEVER NEVER NEVER LOST A GAME 7. NEVER. If your team can limp into a game 7 against a team of Hall of Famers in their prime BUT WITHOUT Bill Russell, you WILL WIN. And if you've got just one of Red Auerbach's "why did he draft this guy?" players to go with Red's "why did he draft Bill Russell?" Red's Bill Russell, chances are you will sweep them. Give me Bill plus a Bird or Cousy or KC and ten guys just happy to be there and I'll give you a title every year they play.
This is the NBA: Russell plus 11 warm bodies =a title
A team of whoever else you want will give you
    great stats. It no title.
It's just that simple. No one in American sports wanted to win more than a Russelll-led team. This is the NBA. And it was invented by Red when he bagged the ultimate team.player with the skill to make it happen and the fire to make it happen.

Always remember that Rick Barry apologized and recanted his statement about wilt whenever people bring up the quote about Wilt being a loser. Barry admitted the opposite was true later on. Always remember that Wilt requested a trade and it is untrue that his team didn’t want him anymore. All that being said, Wilt n Russell stand heads n shoulders above all the rest of the players in nba history due to their overall abilities individually. It has nothing to do with rings either cuz a ring depending on 10-12 guys will never magically make u better or worse than you were as a player before u ever got the ring and competition and individual abilities and stats that reflect them and impact on winning from both ends of the floor against hall of fame competition will always matter far far more than a simple ring with no context

In the 70s and 80s, Russell was not close to being considered the GOAT over Wilt. In fact, more people placed Oscar over Russell. It wasn't until Jordan started to win in the 90s that Russell entered the conversation.
That is because championships were pushed as the reason to put Jordan ahead of Wilt; which meant the guy with 11 rings had to be included in the GOAT debate (and Oscar had to be excluded).
Just another example of how the rules were changed to favor Jordan (so Nike could sell more shoes and ESPN could increase its advertising profits, I mean ratings).
On a side note: Russell was ranked in the top-10 in the world as a high jumper in college and he was 22-0 in single-elimination games (NCAA, Olympics, NBA)

I think Kawhi heard & saw what happened to players like Bill Walton, Grant Hill, Penny, a few others and it scared him. Also, I think coach Pop and Spurs staff influenced him as well (as far as the "load management" thing). However, a positive is it seems like Kawhi finally realized that it doesn't pay to do that this season, and it is showing.

There are other old school fans on these channels that take the things you say seriously. And most of them won't confront you....They just unsubscribe. I will say that you are doing a great job at reacting in general and have showed that you are at least respectful to subscribers in the comments which is rare. I honestly wished you would’ve asked what I meant by this title instead of coming at me and accusing me of something, saying this and that. You took this title out of context man. I said this is my favorite case, not because I think he’s better than anyone, but because I really messed with how Clayton Crowley shined light over what Bill Russell did off the court. Me saying that this is my favorite case is not me saying that he’s the goat or he’s better than bird or anybody else. The overall video was cool, the accolades and accomplishments he made on the court was respectable. But what made this my favorite video of the whole series was the end of the video talking about what he did off the court and the challenges he’s faced being a black man. Plus, him getting cut from sophomore year was the same for me, so that resonated with me. The things he contributed to, making sure we would have a better future had me build more respect for him. I respected all these things, and to see him still laughing and having a smile on his face even though going through all that made me respect him even more. What I said had nothing to do with him being the goat, or being better than Larry bird. That’s my fav video of the making the case series because I personally appreciated how well made this vid was, that’s all man. Again! This has NOTHING to do with him being better than Bird or me saying he’s the goat. It’s my favorite because of the things he did off the court, that was more than basketball, that’s all I’m saying. I’m pretty annoyed at this point so I’m done responding to you. If you still don’t get it, than it is what it is.

Is the GOAT.about winning? Or about personal accomplishments? Jordan's accomplishments feel Jordanish, not Bulls-ish. So do Wilt's. Wilt and.MJ played on Team Wilt and Team MJ. "Republicans buy bball shoes, too." Jordan told Spike Lee.
"I called Larry up after he and the Celtics won in 84 and said.that.the way he handled.himself and.more important how he handled his team and.the how they fought the Lakers and said Larry you made me proud to have been a.Celtic my whole career."
Russell was stingy with compliments of guys he never played with, so this was like a ohone call from God. Or seeing Ted Williams tip his hat to the crowd as he rounded third on a home run. Why? Ted Williams never acknowledged the crowds at Fenway.
Know who else deserves a video? Red Auerbach, inventor of modern pro bball. The 6th Man. The Fast Break. The Extra.Pass. The Block That Only Counts If It Is Blocked To A Teammate. Psychological warfare. The Other Team Is Your Enemy And.Wants Your Money. An Assist Is As.Good As A Goal. Nothing Counts If You Dont Win The Title/Season/Series/Game.
