To understand this song and the entire debut album it's on (The Hurting, 1983), one thing must be said: both members of the band were enchanted by the work of the psychotherapist Arthur Janov, whose most renowned book was Primal Scream (1970). Janov was the inventor of “primal therapy”, a treatment that encouraged the patient to explore his childhood traumas, experiencing them for a second time and then expressing the long-repressed pain. One way to release this pain is this primal scream. The same name of the duo, not by chance, comes from a psychotherapeutic treatment developed by Janov, during which the patient lives again the earliest sensations of the perinatal age, hence the name “Tears for Fears”. Both members felt that their parents had not given them love, but only a weak, “Pale Shelter”. Composing The Hurting was a way to throw out all the things they absorbed in the childhood, to take the feelings of abandonment, rejection and anger and turn them into something active. With its pure emotions, The Hurting is the album for those who have experienced what being imprisoned in our own emotions means; for those who have felt the desperation that makes its way, when you cannot escape, whether it comes from childhood or not. Probably the best New Wave band of the 80s, their transition from synth pop (at the beginning of the decade) to jazz influenced songs (at the end of the decade) shows how good they were by then.
I didn't really appreciate 80s music when I was a teenager then but my God I do now, fantastic music, bands and memories. Makes me happy and sad in equal measures x

I initially wasn't sure what I thought of this song, but upon re-listening, it's captivated me. Truly an underrated gem! I totally dig the instrumental opening!
Being a fan of The Weeknd made me discover Tears for Fears. The fact that The Weeknd incorporated that high pitch made by Curt into his song "Secrets" lets me know he appreciates this Duo... TTF music is definitely appealing and enjoyable to this day. Timeless Masterpiece!
Omg yes I noticed this too! My mom actually used to listen to this song a lot when I was little and I love The Weeknd so when I was listening to Secrets I was like this sounds familiar! There are other New Wave artists he samples, too- he’s probably inspired a lot by this genre + era.

As músicas do Tears for Fears fazem aflorar aquele sentimento que temos guardado bem lá no íntimo.

Gracias x las letras !!
Thank you
Probably the best New Wave band of the 80s, their transition from synth pop (at the beginning of the decade) to jazz influenced songs (at the end of the decade) shows how good they were by then.
Because they don't do the same thing twice

Would love to go back to that time.it was nostalgic.
Same here. At the time (mid 90s) as a kid I thought new wave sounded kind of plastic and weird compared to regular rock. But now I realize how inventive and really atmospheric this music was.

I used to consider Tears for Fears just an 80s band with some cool songs but I saw them live last year and I have to say this is a legit all time rock band and I'm a Tears for Fears fan.
who loves Tears for Fears? I definitely do. Beautiful and emotional music, awesome singing. And not to forget these guys are so good looking up till today.

So I recently got onto a Tears for Fears kick. As a child of the 80s I've always appreciated their biggest hits, but now I'm discovering some of their lesser known stuff. I initially wasn't sure what I thought of this song, but upon re-listening, it's captivated me. Truly an underrated gem! I totally dig the instrumental opening!

@@imani38 You're absolutely right
I still have a green vinyl version of this single that I bought from Woolworths. Buying music was a lot more interesting in the old days.
Yes it was. We bought a single every week with our pocket money. My first was If I can't have you, I don't want nobody baby. Years gone by and still love it. 70s and 80s were great times to grow up in.
Yes no one nowadays is going to have fond memories of downloading a song. The music’s rubbish now anyway.
Would you ever consider selling this to me?
ironically my parents had to just dispose of a lot of vinyls they had since we had no room for them anymore, they would be worth so damn much nowadays
Yes picked up many bargain lps from woolies.
The extended version of this has to be there best song amongst many. Especially the longer introduction and the extended base guitar breakdown in the middle.

Curt and Roland in all their glory: deep grief, soulful vocals, shrill lyrics.
Man we were so lucky to have such amazing musical artists such as this coming out when I was a teenager and no F'ing autotuned crap in sight.

1982, 1983, 1984, the three very best years ever in the Music History, without doubts!! Too bad Music is never be the same quality again :(
Music is the same quality. You just do not listen to it.
They are putting out a remastered version of all their songs. 👍
Every year of the 80s created someones story
maybe 82 83 and 84 were just your ears and mind's best focus on music.
Not sure if they were the best years ever but they were nonetheless tremendous. So many great albums/singles were released in those years.
As músicas do Tears for Fears fazem aflorar aquele sentimento que temos guardado bem lá no íntimo.

The Hurting é um álbum perfeito. Todas as faixas são bonitas.
Esse clipe é memorável!!!! 😍
