    This guide is probably the best honing guide that has EVER been made . When I was younger I could sharpen ANY blade by hand down to even a 1/16 th . Now I am old and shaky I use this guide . you can set the primary AND secondary bevels and the guide is 100% easy and repeatable.

    I use the jig all the time for most of my sharpening. There are two little niggles that I made a video about some months ago, as well as some other sharpening tips.
    Thanks for the video Morton.

    Your video was great. Thanks!
    My guess about the roller guide with the camber is that it might eliminate the slight angle to the micro bevel. Since the micro bevel adjustment raises/lowers only one side of the roller guide, a perfectly cylindrical guide would have a tendency to tilt back to rolling completely flat on the sharpening stone. You essentially have four contact points: the two corners of the blade and the two at the ends of the roller guide. The cambered guide, however, would simply shift its rolling point to whatever the new low-point is on its circumference; since the ends of the cambered guide are smaller, they wouldn't be in the way any longer to interfere and push the sharpening jig to a new "flat" angle. There are only three contact points, then: two on the corners of the blade and ONE on the roller guide. The point of the camber roller, according to Veritas, is to add a camber to a blade. However, maintaining even pressure on both corners of the blade (as you do in your video) rather than pushing down one corner or the other should prevent a camber from being added.

    I am starting to realize using hand tools is not about speed. It’s about the enjoyment of not having that buzz in your ears even with hearing protection. If a person who appreciates the silence can’t appreciate the preparation to maintain the silence then hurry up and forget the hand tool and turn on the buzz tool. Use the the jig that gets you the results that keeps the buzz away. Take time to use the tool, but first take the time to prepare the tool to make it what we need, fulfillment.

  • @clovercreekcraft9913
    @clovercreekcraft9913 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, it was great for a while. The problem is the 2 screws that hold the blade do not hold it tight enough and it will move. The harder you tighten them the more the base will permanently bow. this will ruin the jig so that it won't hold any blade tightly.

  • @jasonwilbur854

    it should be noted that when sharpening shorter blades (such as the stanley no 151) moving past the 3 o'clock cam position will actually tilt the blade back to grind on its heal... ie don't use the 6 o'clock position in order to get your micro bevel on short blades whose tips don't reach the guide stop.

    Man, I am done with my Veritas guide. My chisel edge is always skewed, even enough to be seen with the naked eye. It's a sharp edge but definitely skewed. I I tried skewing the chisel into the correct position by putting strips of painter's tape on the high-side of the back of the chisel. I even tried using the same shim technique on the inside surface of the clamping jaws. It did not work. In order to get the chisel to stay put, excess force must be applied with a pair of pliers onto the knurled knob. No matter what the chisel stills is able to move.
    I think it's just a bad design. The main bevel side of my chisel (mortis) looks like multi-faceted diamond, and the edge is still skewed, sharp but skewed. Looks like I will be seeking out a better system. You would think Veritas would address this problem. Thanks for posting; good information.

    so I picked one of these up and I am restoring a few old hand planes and thers something I don't get on the registration jig. I watched a few vids no one explains it and I have a hard time with reading lol dyslexic lol. I don't under stand what is the high angle and standerd angle and back bevels for what do I use each one and for one please help. I also am vary disappointed in how lose the jig fits on sliding dove tale makes it hard to get it strat when its wigleing arond a lot should I take it back and estrange it

    • @HighlandWoodworking
      @HighlandWoodworking  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The jig can be positioned to give a low angle grind or a high angle angle grind on the edge of the tool, in addition to using the standard position (which handles the standard grinding angles for mose chisels and plane irons). If you pause the video at 1:34 you can see the colors and the degrees labeled on the jig (which should be the same as what shows on the jig you own)
      This video may also help you:
      www.leevalley.com/en/Home/VideoPopup.aspx?v=126
      This video talks about "back bevels" for plane irons. The video does not use the Veritas jig for sharpening or for back beveling, but it will help you better understand what a back bevel is for. You do not have to put a back bevel on your plane irons. It is a matter of personal preference. You never use a back bevel on a chisel.

    hi just a follow up on my last post l think l know what is wrong with the micro bevel not workin and putting a skew on the blade. lf you look carefully at the hole the axle runs through it is not parallel to the roller edge and is multiplied more on the 6 o clock position because of the extra thickness of the roller one way round this problem is use the cambered roller so you can press down on one side to correct it or dont use in 6 o clock position and re register the blade to 30 degrees a lot of fiddling about for something thats supposed to make it easier hope l have helped.

    • @HighlandWoodworking
      @HighlandWoodworking  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +busterbbe Uneven across the front of the blade? Using honing guides is a lot about the finger-pressure at the ends, over the blade part. Make sure to use even pressure across the front - I like to rest my fingers on the two corners to make sure pressure is consistent across the whole tip of the blade.

    good vidio l also gought this jig and have the same problem with the micro bevel it simply does not work as you have said it lifts the roller up one side more than the other even on a 3/4"chisle l also contacted them they did reply to my email but dont seem to accept there is a problem.The jig is no better than the much cheeper eclipps type jig and is easyer to set up with wooden stop blocks,and no scewing of the blade you just spent a lot of time making square also the top clamping is not very good thats why they have just made a side clamping atachment like the lie nielsen and eclipps a move in the right direction but it still does not fix the micro bevel problem l would say save your money and buy a ecipps type giude or if you can get a lie nielsen one probabley the best one you can buy expensive but superb quality so to sum up l would not buy the veritas one it does not work ok if you only want one angle and no micro bevel l am very disapointed in mine and will buy the lie nielsen one.

      While you sharpen with the jig, take it of the stone every 10 or so strokes and check the bevel, if the sharpening seems to be favouring one side, shift the pressure from one hand to the other a little to correct it. Also most carpenters chisels are not perfectly flat in relation to the top and bottom of the chisel, this can throw the hone out too.
