Also make sure to do it in properly ventilated, open place or under a fumehood to not breath in potential fumes and if there is an uncontrolled metalic fire, it will be contained

Yes brother but the reason we should use eye protection is that the alpha rays potentially travels through protein fibres present in eye before the rays hit retina. Continuous passage of rays from these fibres make them rigid through which we cannot see. This is generally called 'motia'. But thanks for your concern.

Magnesium oxide which is formed is basic nature ..it is confirmed by adding an acid base indicator red litmus which turn blue when added to basic solution.
Since Magnesium oxide is metal oxide which is basic in nature
