    Making him a coast watcher was an interesting and plausible vehicle for Frampton's guest part. He didn't even need to cut his hair as he wasn't actually in the military and living in the wild as it were.

    THIS was the peak of human history! Not this show, not television, but the 1970s!
    The 70s was the absolute Peak of human history, all things considered! The 70s blew away everything before, and everything after. There will be nothing to compare it to, ever.
    It was like time stopped, just to have a Carnival for 10 years! God Bless the 1970s, and EVERYONE who made it great!

    Just saw this episode on rerun and recognized Peter Frampton. His characters name was even Peter. Looked for his name in the credits and they put some other name in, but I knew it was him! So I Googled it and found this. I knew I wasn’t crazy.

    I remember watching this series when I was a kid, almost anything to do with world war two got me very interested. Had two uncles were in, one in Italy and the other in the Pacific, could never get them to talk about it though.

      The fellows who saw real action (and that was almost everybody in World War II) never talked about the war. It wasn't glorious to them ---- only horrible.

    *I know that Peter Frampton was a big fan of "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep," and that the producers figured out some way for him to keep his curly locks by having him as a castaway (I think) on an island in the Pacific."*

      Hi Christina - I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. I am always on the lookout to find unusual and humorous scenes from great television shows. Hope to post more when I have time. I spent a good deal of my late childhood in the basement building model airplanes such as the Corsair and Zero fighters. Yes, the show was a big influence on me and I watched each episode. I certainly knew who Peter Frampton was, but was more of a Beatles fan back then. My older sisters were teenagers of the 1970s and had all the records by the 'long haired rock groups', (haha..) so I kind of experienced that era through their interests.

    My younger sister thought that Peter Frampton was CUTE...😆

  • @billparker4707
    @billparker4707 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Actually, the show was also quite expensive to produce, given the corsairs, and everything else...the ratings were dropping when they decided to add some women nurses to the mix (aka pappy's lambs) to try and compete with Charlie's Angels (didn't work that well), but I actually thought the entire series was pretty good...loved Red West as Micklin...COLLEGE BOYS...

    • @cameraman655
      @cameraman655 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Overall it was a much-underrated series and often panned by the critics and episodes like this did not help (I suspect that Peter Frampton was brought in to pander to the teenies, yeah, that worked!). It was the right show in the wrong era. In the mid to late 70s Jimmy Carter and his "Malaise" administration, American cynicism reigned, post-Watergate/Vietnam, anti-military sentiment was ripe, the economy was in the toilet...Nuff said. Now, had Black Sheep aired in the mid-80s might have had a fighting chance, pun intended. There was a totally different mindset, patriotism was at an all-time high, the economy was booming, Americans felt good and confident and they were proud of the military once again and well of course...... Ronald Regan. Still, the surviving members of VMF214 were amused bty Hollywood's take on their squadron, while honored, they questioned the mountain of inaccuracies, especially since Pappy was the show's consultant.

      cameraman655 , I liked the show when it first aired I was about 9 or 10 years old , but the long haired " marines " and the back drop of the South Pacific islands of southern California , kinda did it in for me after about a year , but far as pappy was probably concerned especially about technical accuracy of the show , he wasn't going to bite the hand that feeds , you gotta think ww2 had been over for a long time by then and he was old and the show kept his name out there and the money coming in .

    • @cameraman655
      @cameraman655 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hate group txt !!!!!!!! I hear ya, indeed the technical inaccuracies were rampant in the series, most surviving Black Sheep readily acknowledged. Still it held my attention and piqued my interest in the military at a time the military was “NOT COOL”.

    The tenuous suspension of disbelief with this show is shattered with the 1980's hair styles of the cast in general. The Marines back then had short hair and greased back. It's totally phony baloney, but the dogfights with the Corsairs make it worth watching.

    Yes, Frampton's hair was way too long for those days, even for an Englishman, but just about everyone else on the show had their hair too long. I mean, it did make them look better that way, but for historical accuracy, an F.

      I like how Peter Frampton's character does mind control on the young American pilot here - first he tells the pilot that 'My Country Tis of Thee' was originally the British National anthem, then he encourages the young American pilot to sing along to the British National anthem version with lyrics like "God Save our King" included. That's not a very patriotic lyric for an American to sing, but then again not a lot makes sense here....

    • @TommygunNG
      @TommygunNG 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's being polite to one's host.
      Notably, after 9/11, the Queen herself sang along to a congregational singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" at a church service in honor of the victims. In addition, the famed Changing of the Guard was once performed to the American anthem around that time.

    Peter Frampton?? It's the 1940s; is he playing a man or a woman? It would have been a more interesting cameo if they had managed to cut or disguise his locks, or even had him use a stage name and wait for the press to report it as people figured out who it really was.

    • @cameraman655
      @cameraman655 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This show had horrible ratings, I guess by bringing in Frampton, the producers were trying to attract younger viewers. Frankly, I loved the show, of course ask any surviving 214 pilot or crew member, the show was far from realistic. This show was a great show that was made in the wrong decade. The 70s, most Americans had very negative and pessimistic opinions of the US, the war in Vietnam ended just a few years earlier and was still very much n the minds of many Americans, Watergate further eroded what little patriotism there was and the economy was in the toilet. Now, had this show aired in the mid 80s, during the Regan years, with a very different mindset, it might have had a shot of surviving.

    • @rassatabales9462

      A lot of male actors had long hair in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s (through to today) and yes, when you see them in a war film that took place in prior decades it looks out of place in terms of realism. However, length of hair in a given era does not sound like it has much to do with patriotism. The long haired soldiers of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were not unpatriotic. Check out the 1981 War and Soccer film "Victory" with Stallone, Michael Caine and Pele among others and then check out the male extras in the stands - most of them have long feather / hockey cuts (and this is supposed to be occupied France - circa 1943) At the time of Black Sheep Squadron Peter Frampton was making millions of dollars through "Frampton Comes Alive" and being a rock star so cutting his locks would have been tantamount to throwing away his music career. Black Sheep Squadron is (was) a cool TV show and one of my favorites growing up. It is (by and large) a successful retelling of fighter ace Colonel Gregory "Pappy" Boyington (USMC) and his squadron of "misfits", popular history meets American late 1970s TV sitcom, that is the style of the show.

      Many coast watchers were not military till later and given Reserve Naval Commissions, but the Japanese didn’t respect the POW nor the Geneva Convention.
