My father flew with the 9th Air Force 391st Bombardment Group out of Matching England. He was a Bombardier/ Navigator in a B-26 and was credited with 78:combat missions 3 of which were on D-Day .
He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross". I was born in 1955 and he and I watched 12 O'clock every week together . My dad will turn 101 years old this September . He has always been and always will be my hero .

My own Dad would have been 100 last January, he passed at age 70. He was a ball turret gunner.8AF 487bg 839bs. Stationed near Lavenham. We watched this program, also. I regret not asking him for his anecdotes, but he did speak of a damage claim on a Me262. Waist gunner verified it. Certainly you treasure any time and conversation that you may get with your father.

I loved this show back in the '60's and I still love it. My uncle was a B-17 squadron commander and I always loved that this show used real combat footage. Even though these episodes are 50 years old now I think they are better than most of what is on offer today. And Robert Lansing was stellar.

My dad was a armorer and waist/tail gunner. Mom only told the children (5) a couple of times after we were grown of the nightmares he had. He would scream 'JUMP... GET OUT'. She would go outside and set on the porch when these occurred. We came along in mid 50's and early 60's.

flying out of Matching Green, England in 1944 . His planes name was " Miss Behavin" and he was credited with 78+ missions. He was awarded The "Distinguish Flying Cross" and was rotated home and was reassigned as bombardier instructor for B-29s . He's still around and kicking .

My husband’s cousin, John Kriegshauser, was the B-17 pilot of the famous Mi Amigo. The plane had been fatally crippled across the Channel, with injured personnel, and started going down over Sheffield, England. The only place to land was a park, but it was in the city and was full of schoolchildren. John made the decision to crash into a nearby hillside instead, thereby killing all 10 aboard, but saving the children and the surrounding city. He and the crew are still honored to this day in Sheffield. There was a book written about it too. He was only 23 years old.

He also composed the themes to some of favorite 60's shows, including the Outer Limits, The Invaders, The Rat Patrol and many others. All were/are outstanding. I loved this show as a 'yiddle' boy back in the 60's, and it inspired me to become a civilian general aviation pilot, seven years after my daughter was born, in '06. She got to fly with my flight instructor, Jason Bullard, even younger than Gallagher in this episode. Jason taught me how to fly.
This episode shares something important and quite true. It is actually quite easy to learn how to fly, most solo after their fifth or sixth flight. But it takes time to become a pilot, a boat skipper, or a driver who does well during long commutes--one has to get over those inside demons and remember that moving a motored object a long way is a full time job.
Though it is nice to listen to music while driving, or flying..... Or having family or a colleague next to you to keep the process from being boring.
Twelve O'Clock High has stood the test of time as good TV with good backstories, not so much about war but about how we grow and learn to cope with our personal stress while relating affection to those who support us.

Mistake to compare Lansing to Peck. One is a film, the other a TV show. Different actors. But anyone in any comparison to Peck has to lose, and lose badly. Super fun video. I notice the 1960s series network imprimatur common to westerns and war programs: Men will be tough men; there is always a moral lesson underwriting the story; the music is symphonic and motivating. Takes me back to the glory days of television and movies when one felt good when the show was over. Not quite in the realm of Gregory Peck's Twelve O'clock film, but sufficiently reminiscent. I'll watch the series. Glad it's available.

During the war my father was in the military police. He was stationed at an air field in "Perin Downs" IIRC. He would recount the times he and other soldiers would group up at the fence and watch as the B-17's would be returning from missions. Planes that were shot up, badly damaged, engines smoking or blown out altogether were given priority landing. Those dropping red flares on final approach indicating dead or wounded aboard were the first down. Medics and ambulances at the ready to meet them when they came to a stop.
46,000 Pilots and crew were killed, wounded or MIA in the air war over Europe. Heroes all .

Joanie, not sure which of your posts I'm responding to. I also was raised on a history of the planes of WWII by my father who worked for Boeing in Seattle on the B29. I have a 8.5 x 11 photo of his team (showing all who were involved in just one particular B29). There are about 35-45 men and women dedicated to each plane. I've attended many air shows in Calif. flown in B25 and P51D, both of which came out of North American Aviation, where Dad worked after WWII 50-53 Korean War. He was there when they launched the F86 and had an ace visit us at home in Los Angeles. So of course I joined the USAF reserves in the Nurse Corps. Sooo proud of all the men and women who worked and continue to work in the military during war and at home. Take care.

Fine series for war drama short stories. Often filmed at Chino Airport, CA. Notice Eucalyptus trees in the background. Hard to come by in England.
Robert Lansing (Gen. Savage) lights up filtered cigarettes which did not appear until the 60's. Sadly, those cigarettes killed Robert Lansing early in his life.

    • @russg1801
      @russg1801 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think the tobacco co's introduced filtered cigarettes in the 1950's and touted their "smoothness" - they were also more appealing to WOMEN whom they were increasingly trying to hook. But the old unfiltered Camel's and Lucky's were still big sellers. That's what America's fighting men were dragging on during WW2 so the long filtered coffin nails ARE an out-of-place anachronism here. No matter; historical accuracy never mattered to the script writers or the producers.

    • @russg1801

As others have said, Lansing was perfect for his role. Season One was my favorite; it had a "believable rawness" to it, if that makes any sense. The series seemed to "soften" as it progressed from season to season -- perhaps to attract and hold a larger female audience. In that context, I believe Burke was the logical choice for the lead role. However, I personally wish Lansing and the grittiness of the series had remained until the very last episode. I found myself becoming more and more disinterested over the last two years of this show's run. Anyway, thank you Jefke for putting this series up here.
