That was wonderful. I remember the series as a kid, but when I got older, I found out that one of the Blacksheep was from my hometown of Amarillo. Don Moore was shot down and presumed dead 28 Dec 1943. They never found him. I read Frank Walton's book, he was the information officer for the squadron. We corresponded a few times, along with a few of the pilots in this video, for a book my brother and I were working on about Don. My brother was working on putting together the last of the information when he passed away and I haven't been able to retrieve the material. I would love to finish it.
Our little brother was a Marine, he's had a lot of stories (and some he can't tell). So, from a big sister of a Marine and from a historian from Texas, simper-fi gentlemen. It was a pleasure.

I was assigned to VMA 214 in 1969 at USMC El Toro Ca. I worked in the sheet metal/hydraulic shop we had A4 C’s & D’s.. The maintenance control NCO was GnySgt Perez! After about a year I got orders to WesPac.. When I got back to the USA
I was again assigned to VMA 214, we had A4E’s & F’s.. We even had a black sheep in a pen outside the CO’s office..

Black Sheep Squadron was my favorite TV show. Tough guy Robert Conrad who was also a new private pilot was perfect for playing Pappy Boyington. They both became good friends & drinking buddies during the making of the TV series. Both got interested in the Vans RV 3 experimental homebuilt planes. I have a Flying Magazine with the feature story on the cover.

they were marines in the flying corps. we need to dump then trump a miserable puke that has no respect for veterans and those who served in battle. i never meet senator McCain. but a meet in 2020 a gentleman bob tower who served on the us navy aircraft carrier forestall (sp?). he was aboard ship when fly boy mr. mccain crashed on deck. there were some microwave issues. tough he never officially meet face to face with pilot mccain bob respected the band of brothers. and he lives it daily. he serves other still living veterans and other as a quiet contributer as an active member of the new britain connecticut veterans of foreign war. i meet him during the pandemic 2020 when i was soul searching and grieving the passing of my wife and trying to find out more of private first class in the army air force who served at us territory of the island of guam on special assignment to man electric winches to assist in the rescue of downed allied fighter pilots and crew and aircraft before they went below sea level.
my wife is jane francis beebe-waterschoot and my father in-law who i never met because he pasted before jane and i met is lloyd walter beebe.

As a young man, Pappy's memoir was one of my favorite books, I don't know how many times I read it ...
An incredible man, so different from the typical figure of a pilot and fighter.

Same for me.i saw the TV show with Robert Conrad as a young man, and an old B&W movie about Chenault and the Flying Tigers where Pappy started out flying the tooth painted P47s. Always wanted to fly. My cousins husband ran a spraying service and took me up a few times in his old 2-seat biplane. I ate it up. He said I was a natural pilot.
I learned to fly fixed wing in ROTC in college. I wore glasses, and was so disappointed when the Army would no longer accept officer candidates for fixed wing, not even observation or FAC's
But I wanted to fly, and if it had to be rotary wing, so be it. So I learned to fly helos at old Ft. Wolters TX (contractor base that shut down as soon as Vietnam ended) from the little birds through the UH-1 Iroquois (Huey). The Army didn't even need those once Vietnam was over (actually that might have saved my life!) so I got out to ready reserve and took a job flying for the US State Dept, USAID, in Pakistan first, among others. Flew a Bell 104/5, very similar to a Huey, and even flew some fixed wing, some old Army Surplus Beavers that were STOL planes. Fun as hell to fly, into isolated spots with little to no runway.
But Pappys bio started me out.

So did I. Years later I bought an autographed hard copy. It's absolutely amazing a movie based on that book (embellishments and all) has never be made.

I fondly remember the TV show and it helped inspire me to earn my pilots license while I was still in high school. After I had graduated high school and before heading to Lackland AFB for Air Force boot camp, I had the great privilege of meeting Pappy Boyington. He chided me for choosing the AF. But congratulated me on choosing to join the military. He and Gen Patton are in my top 2 favorite WWII heroes.

Back in late seventies my grandma went to Fresno to have lunch it’s some old friends when she got back she informed us it was with Pappy Boyington. But grandma why didn’t you tell us, you know how much we love the show she just smiled, and changed the subject later found out she met him through grandpa.

Our country is coming apart at the seams without the steady, non-complaining guidance of this generation. Each passing year the thinning ranks lost a little more of the vigilant guard on freedom and stability they provided without ever asking for anything. Our country sorely misses them.

Wonderful men and women like this, full of Honor, commitment to service and sacrifice, still exist and are still doing fantastic jobs. They just don't get acknowledged for it enough in the media. You can find it and see it if you know where to look and also we're not to look.

It will be a sad day when the last of that generation passes.
The world will lose a great measure of honor, dignity and unselfish courage.
They never asked to be called heroes, but the free world owes them a debt we can't come close to paying.

Loved the tv show. Had the pleasure of meeting Pappy Boyington during the EAA flyin convention, and he was kind enough to autograph my book about the Black Sheep. Also met a man who had a photo of when Pappy was a POW. Painted on his barracks roof was a sign "Boyington here". During my years in the Civil Air Patrol my call sign was "black sheep." He was an amazing person as where all those that flew with him.

My father was a history Professor and he loved airplanes from WWI and WWII. My favorite books in his library were the 3 oversized, Time/Life WWII Books that were 50% Photos. as a teen when i watched the TV show it was a show i looked forward to, but i knew it was embellished and somewhat Fantasy so it didn't detract an iota from your Reputations....You guys are heros and always will be. It is outstanding to see some of the Black Sheep still alive. If it hadn't been for these brothers of mine I probably would not of completed an honorable tour for 20 years in The Marine Corps. The valor and honor that these brothers of mine deserves a much better record than what was recorded. The opinion of some bureaucrats make it look worse than it really was. Does anybody know if there were any Navy/Marine Corps Air Medals awarded the VMA 214. Yes they were flew 14,000 hours in combat, 13,000 sorties, and dropped more than 10,000 tons of ordnance. For their service VMA-214 was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation with Bronze Star. Semper Fi Marines and thank you for your service and sacrifice. GySgt USMC Retired.
