    I mix my chick peas in a food bag with a salted caramel liquid additive that’s used for baking from Asda.
    Leave in the fridge overnight.
    Works very well.
    As for the videos they are excellent.
    Given me a few tips and for me better than the professional fishermen videos as most of us are casual fishermen and fish the exact same way as you do, well I do anyway 😂😂

    *important update*
    The test was just a bit of fun trying out chickpea’s as a bait for the first time. I fully understand I haven’t covered all chickpea variables in the test 😂
    Also by adding the goo I am aware I have changed not only the colour but the smell and taste of the chickpeas, the point of this was more to prove that the hookbait you are using certainly matters and that these tests aren’t pointless, you can’t just put anything on the hook and expect a bite. Some things work better than others ! It’s good to test out different colours flavours and baits. However it’s my personal belief that colour matters more than flavour!
    Also I know that hair rigging the chickpeas with a bait stop would have been the best way, but I’m also lazy and this would be time consuming on every cast 🎣
    Again, Just a bit of fun guys! Tight lines and take care !

    I've found the hook baits are much better if you used dried chickpeas and prepare them yourself. Then when you mount them, be sure to mount through both hemispheres of the seed and no down the fracture point.

    • @WestysAngling
      @WestysAngling  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great advice James ! I will pin this comment so people can try it. However, I’m not sure I would personally like to invest the time and effort prepping the chickpeas myself. I think corn will still be my preference as a similar natural particle ! 🎣

    imterestng video matt....all i know is i used em years ago stalking carp in the edges with a float rod....i used 3 versions ..natural...as they come ....yellow food colored thats all we had them days..and red...every carp came on both colours!!....and mounting the bait was a simple side hooking on an 8 kamasan animal hook!...if ya dont experiment in angling ya never know.....its all part of the fun of this great obsession of ours!...tight lines buddy...

    Hi westy I recommend you use small shrimp mounted on the shank of the hook because tench and carp love it even the small ones

    Great advice as already mentioned in comments buy the dried chick peas soak for 24hours plus boil for 10-20 minutes check with baiting needle , then cool with cold water , best for the hook is hair rigged ,or the bait band ,with the hair ,use floss , just loop through a normal nylon short hair , salt is worth adding to the hook baits, braid hook links are also useful , I have spent years on chick peas but the tinned are too soft all the best to all tight lines

  • @chrisdevine2507
    @chrisdevine2507 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As usual brilliant viewing, I use chick peas a lot , but always soak and cook my own , find tinned chick peas way to soft , good for spod but to soft for hook , always colour mine red and yellow and mix with maples, red dari , corn and hemp but never fished then on a method feeder , more a scattered bait approach, loved this test , proved a point I think 😊🎣🎣

    • @WestysAngling
      @WestysAngling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t find I was getting an aggressive quick bite response with chickpeas though like I would with corn or maples 🌾 I don’t think it’s a bait I would try again . Yes the test really did prove a point I was shocked how much of a difference it made!

    • @oddmanout98
      @oddmanout98 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’ll that certainly proved a point. Thanks for the lesson. It’s been suggested to me the dried out chickpeas make a good additive to basic ground bait. Any thoughts on that? Thanks for the video. Atb. Paul.

    • @WestysAngling
      @WestysAngling  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oddmanout98 I personally can’t see them giving any kind of flavour or enhancement/ boost bud who knows only one way to tell and that’s to try it, I’m told yeast is the best additive you can buy it from British aqua feeds 👌🏻 I am going to get some for a winter video

  • @markallen221

    Just started using chickpeas in Spain. Local carp have got used to corn. Get the raw peas and soak them for 24hrs, then boil for 20 minutes. Add Scopex, I use banana and pineapple. Make sure the peas are soft enough to crush between finger and thumb as Carp will have trouble digesting them if under boiled. I use a korum bayonet hair rig.

  • @alanjohnson1326
    @alanjohnson1326 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Been using chickpeas for years and like a lot of the comments dried and prepared at home is vastly cheaper with or without colourings easy peasy. Again you must mount through both sections of the pea or it will split. At my club water el natural is the way forward but also had success with many different colours. I believe it's size compared to other free offerings i use prepared piegon conditioner as free offerings round the hook bit hey ho if it works don't change it for a particular water. Tight lines and please keep the videos coming great to see you keep it simple and not swayed by the enormous advertising by the bait companies.

    Great fun video with good results on the pink! Noticed few comments saying could be flavour of the goo! Maybe worth trying chickpeas 1 with the goo and other with just plain food dye just to test if it's the goo flavour doing it! Personally don't use method feeders but still look forward to next vid😊

    Not just colour
    I've been giving this a little thought. I'm almost certain that flavour/scent is just as important as colour.
    I fish a couple of natural lakes (not commercials) that have a good head of tench and bream. Both lakes can be highly coloured and I'm sure it's the scent that initially attracts the fish as visibility is very limited.

    • @WestysAngling
      @WestysAngling  ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely, I have found that also! I definitely feel consistently that fish prefer pink baits at most venues. But on some venues you can get quick bites on white, orange or yellow 😂 it’s what keeps fishing interesting!

      @timwise4198 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good insight into fishing with chickpeas they definitely like the chickpeas with the goo added whether it's the colour or the flavouring be interesting if you put a different colour goo onto the other chickpeas to see how the carp reacted to that
      Top content as usual westy tight lines 👍

  • @davearthur514
    @davearthur514 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video, quick question - if the pink baits win, how will you know it's the colour and not the almond flavour that's done it?

    • @WestysAngling
      @WestysAngling  ปีที่แล้ว

      You wouldn’t know! Not for sure anyway. I certainly feel colour matters more than flavour when fishing. But flavour definitely comes into play. It’s an almond flavour goo, which too be honest I have never done really well using. I have tried it on some wafters and couldn’t get a bite 😂 I wasn’t just testing colour more does the hook-bait actually matter. It’s definitely going to be a combination of both, I just can’t fit all that in the video title 😂

    All of those "Pink" were Korda Goo Enhanced Pink. So not just a chickpea dyed pink without flavor enhancers. Color does matter at times, but you have not controlled for the other variables imparted by the Goo outside of just the color. Chickpeas take color really well and can be dyed with normal food dyes or they can pick up color and flavor by using something like crushed beets, Braggs Aminos, etc. So a fun video, but there are levels to the chickpea that you haven't yet explored.

    Found this interesting I’m one of those mad fisherman that will try anything.
    I’ve fished chickpeas never caught on them. I’ve look at the ethnic section in the supermarket as many products on that section I’ve never seen before never mind a fish, I’ve fished kids 3 for a £ sweets and caught to the surprise of my fishing partner Nick had Carp ,Bream & Tench on them, also used berries that over hang the water & caught not easy to hook or keep on the hook, I’ve even tried Nice n Spicy Nik Naks which cause a strange pattern on the surface and I’ve had a carp on them, as anyone tried the different flavours of Peperami ?
