  • Turn that screen brightness up! Welcome to the SSC2 - Bringing the power and the TIR optics from the popular Diode Dynamics SS3 to a smaller footprint, and a clean backlight feature to boot!
    **Moving forward I think that I will do paired ditch light comparisons instead of singles. I believe that the additional light will help the camera pick it all up a little better. **
    Driver's Seat Impressions:
    SSC2 Pro - Combo: First off, the camera is not doing this light any favors. I believe that it is due to the cooler color temperature as I can assure you that this light is not short on output (my passenger/assistant liked this one's output the best), but I am going to present the video without manipulation. The GoPro Hero 8 settings were locked and adjusted for the Baja Designs lights, and I believe that the cooler color temp doesn't show up as well. The cooler, shorter wavelength, color temp will also not perform quite as well in the wet conditions that we experienced during this video. This light has excellent downfield throw with the driving pattern (easily the best of this bunch), and the flood actually does provide some coverage to the sides, although not as much as I would like. I will always be critical of flood patterns on forward facing lights as there is a good amount of light that is pushed upwards and lost to lighting the trees 25ft up. Take note of how far this light throws during the comparisons. I'm excited to see what it does in amber, in clear swapped amber (4000k), and in dry or differing conditions. This is now the light that I am running on my personal vehicle, and plan to keep it that way. Combo lens on passenger's side and a driving lens on the driver's side.
    Rigid Industries SR-M Pro - Driving: I found myself decently impressed with this light, and I wasn't expecting a ton! It did not win in either distance or spread alone, but it did provide a good mix of both of these elements. It has a warmer color temperature which shows better on camera, and I would consider this a good overall light for lower speeds. I don't like the form factor of the housing of this light as much as the DD or BD competitors, but I was not disappointed with the output.
    Baja Designs S2 Pro Driving/Combo: Most likely the current ditch light popularity king, and it is not a slouch here again. I am and continue to be a fan of this warmer 5000k color temperature, and the combo pattern is my recommendation in terms of pattern selection (unless you have a specific use case). However, if you already have upgraded fog lights or some other output option that provides better width I would probably recommend the spot pattern. If you view other videos of mine you will see that Baja Designs spot patterns open up pretty quick, and if they are pointes in a "ditch light" arrangement they will open up well for a swath of coverage, even with the spot pattern.

    Such a great review on the SSC2! I wish this video came out sooner😭already waiting for my Baja s2 pros wide cornering lenses to come in. Will definitely get the SSC2 for my chase lights/ camp light in flood lense. Amber backlight for the chase and white output for camping etc.

    I like the design of the DD, the bezel not having bolts in the front where the rain is being pressured washed into the face seems like a better plan, also the rear wiring plug and play also seems a better design. Made in the USA , and a Black Friday sale coming up.

      The one thing that definitely helps Baja Designs is their color temperatures. The cameras pick it up better, and in my opinion my eyes prefer the temperature as well in most scenarios.

    Was this comparison with one light (only) mounted up at base of a-pillar? Curious about light projections of BD SS2 Pro (wide cornering) versus Diode Dynamic SSC2 Pro SAE Fog to be mounted in the traditional fog light portals (e.g., considerably lower than top of the hood/base of A-pillar).

    • @hotshotoffroad
      @hotshotoffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you are correct. This was one single light used for all of the comparisons. If you're looking for a street legal fog pattern to mount low, the SSC2 is going to be the best (and only legal) performer no doubt. If you are not looking to run them on the street, and just need a wide bath of light projected to the sides then the S2 pro is a good competitor as well.

  • @Ram-vt3rm
    @Ram-vt3rm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video. Your opinion, if you had to chose one: the BD S2 pro combo or the DD SSC2 combo amber back light. Seems like a tough call. I love the idea of the amber back light. But, BD has been pretty good to me in the past. Tough call on these two lights.

    • @hotshotoffroad
      @hotshotoffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You truly can't go wrong with either. My vote would be the SSC2s aside from a couple of conditions:
      Color Temperature: The SSC2s in white provide a crisp, white light output. Not the drop-in 6000k HID blue that you might be thinking of, but a clean white. The BDs provide a bit warmer of a light at 5000k which my eyes personally tend to prefer. However, my passenger when doing these tests liked the SSC2s in white the best so your mileage may vary there! There's also the selective yellow 3000k option from DD.
      Fog Lights: On my personal vehicle I have Baja Designs Squadron Pros in a wide cornering pattern in my fog light pockets. They provide ample coverage for me to the sides, and I don't run them on the street so I am not looking for road legality there. Because of this, I am running the DD SSC2s in my ditch light location in a combo pattern lens on my passenger's side, and a driving pattern lens on the driver's side. I did this because the SSC2 is far better at getting light down the road than the S2 Pro. Since I have the upgraded fogs my primary goal is to hit the ditches beyond what my current fog light situation can take care of, and these SSC2s do it very well.
      If you had stock fog lights then you might consider the BD S2. In their driving/combo pattern they put out a very smooth overall bath of light. You will get additional side support, and will get a little more distance as well. Until the SSC2s came out this is what I ran. I had a spot pattern lens on a set of S2 Pros in the ditch light location.
      Hopefully this helps a little bit!

      @@hotshotoffroad thanks for the feedback! I just put a pair of BD S1’s amber wide cornering as reverse lights. I am thinking these SSC2 with red back light would have been a great choice. I don’t know if better. I think the potential is there. Especially if I get SAE and I could use that all the time. Sounds sweet. Makes me consider replacing the S1’s.

    • @hotshotoffroad
      @hotshotoffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      S1s in wide cornering are a good option for backup lights, although I am not sure if I would have gone amber, personally. Although like I said before color temp is all preference! If you were comparing the S1 to the SSC2 Pro then it's no contest... If you were to go SSC2 Sport then it's probably a wash. The only tangible benefit to swapping would be addition of the backlight. My .02

    Yes, full review please! Great video.

    • @hotshotoffroad
      @hotshotoffroad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You theoretically could hook it up that way, but keep in mind that both the main beam and the back lights can not be on at the same time. So if you wanted to have the main beam on a single switch it would have to "turn off" the back light first. Hopefully that makes sense!

      Why not run SS3s as your ditch lights?
      Also, I don't have any reason to believe that DD will be putting out a 4000k light bar (doesn't mean that they won't), but here's something that you could do. You could get either a white or amber light bar, and swap a couple of the lenses on it (lenses are only a few bucks) to either amber or white. The output from it would blend together, and you would probably be relatively close to a 4000k output overall. Are you looking at their lower grille stealth kit? A handful of my customers have them and I have not gotten a single negative review yet.
