Calli's Friend is trying to get her into THAT Show

- Mori Calliope has had several friends from back in ze day, and a select few still touch bases with her on occasion. They come from all sorts of backgrounds- whether they be artists, business people or even fellow musicians, Calli has always appreciated spending time with the ones she loves. One of the most well known friends was around during Calli's "Once-ler phase" where she was among many who watched the Lorax movie for the infamous Tumblr sexy man. Now, here in the present, her friend has found a new obsession she can't wait to share with Calli. How will Hololive's Rapping Reaper react to an invitation she's not sure she's ready to accept?
*DISCLAIMER: This clip alludes and at times makes blatant reference that the show in question is Vivziepop's Indie Production "Hazbin Hotel". However, I will make clear here that Calli at no point here nor ever clarified that it was indeed Hazbin that her friend is trying to get her to watch. Mori has refused to state it though she also claims "It's pretty obvious", so if for any reason this clip turns out to be false in that regard, I apologize and ask that everyone treat this clip as a fun "What if?" if that turns out to be the case.
...but we're pretty damn sure it's Hazbin. At the very least Helluva Boss

It's an entire show of tumblrsexymen, truly inevitable.

Episode 4 hits hard, and its music video is probably one of the popular ones 👍
I have no idea of what that even means... and I dabbled a bit on tumblr before the Twitter migration, when I abandoned them both. What on earth is an onensler?
Now, let’s not jump to conclusions. It could be Vivziepop’s *other* adult cartoon set in Hell about a bunch of dysfunctional demons.
That show doesn't have tumblr sexy man.

How interesting… I also have a “high level math” related job (space and orbit algorithm software engineering), and also had anime crap in my cubicle at work (though now I work from home, so technically there’s even more!). Only differences are (1) I’m a guy, and (2) I’m an old (started in anime fandom in the early 80s, helped staff cons like AX in the early years)… I also enjoy THAT show, but I admit that I never quite understood the appeal of the Onceler.
The Onceler is tumblr sexy man basically.
Holy shit, how did you get into anime in the early 80s? That's like getting into hip hop in the late 70s, but you're from Chile or something.
@@sandenson Hahaha! This is gonna be a long reply, but... you asked!
As I said... I'm an old (about to complete my 58th orbit around our Sun)! Like many oldtaku of my era, I'm a member of the STAR BLAZERS generation. That was the gateway anime for many people, after it started airing in UHF TV (back when people still watched television broadcast off-air, often having to adjust rabbit-ear antennas to get the picture to come in!) in many major American markets in late 1979 or so (when I was in my final year of middle school). Now there had been dubbed anime on American TV before that (shows like "Speed Racer", "Marine Boy", "Kimba the White Lion", and "Astroboy"), but "Star Blazers" had a very big difference with all of those... those other shows were episodic (for the most part, save maybe for the first 2 episodes introducing the characters, the episodes could be watched in any order because they were all short self-contained stories). But "Star Blazers" was like most anime we're used to seeing today -- it was sequential. There was a definite story arc from one episode to the next; characters were introduced, grew, changed, fell in love, and sometimes DIED! (This may sound trivial to you today, but this was the first animated show I can ever remember seeing that portrayed death of significant characters occurring in war!) It also had fantastic music (unchanged from the original score, thank goodness, which was an all time classic!), super-cool mecha and character designs (by the late great Leiji Matsumoto), and a dramatic plot setup unlike anything we kids had ever seen back then!
But what REALLY did it, what really got anime *fandom* going in a big way back then, was stuff like my first convention experience back around 1981 or 82... (long before organized anime-focused cons)! It was a "Creation" Con, billed as mainly focused on Star Trek and Dr. Who, but the dealers room... Oh. My. Glob! The dealers room had half the tables or more filled with anime stuff! And in 1982 anime meant Leiji Matsumoto -- not only "Space Battleship Yamato" (the original name of the series), but these other mysterious shows that looked super-cool but similar, like "Captain Harlock" and "Galaxy Express 999". But I'll never forget picking up an art book for Yamato and flipping through it, and seeing scenes from the show that I had never seen before! Like our main hero "Derek Wildstar" sitting on a couch alongside the main enemy commander from the earlier seasons, "Leader Desslok of Gamilon"! I asked the dealer when this scene happened because I would damn sure have remembered it if I had ever seen it on TV, and he told me it was from the 3rd season of the TV series, which had never been broadcast in the USA! He also told me the show was super-popular in Japan, and that there had even been 4 or 5 full length cinematic animated movies released (which, likewise, we had no idea about and had never seen here)! From that moment it became my mission in life to find a way to see this additional content for a show I already was addicted to!
I then found flyers on freebie tables for the then-new and growing national anime clubs, such as the "Star Blazers Fan Club" and "Cartoon/Fantasy Organization" (C/FO). All of these said that if you liked "Star Blazers" and wanted to see the rest, as well as those other shows like "Captain Harlock" and "Galaxy Express 999" and more, then all you had to do was join up and you could start mailing VHS tapes between club pen pals! (Remember, the Internet was only a dream at that point, so we got our anime by mailing packages of VHS tapes back and forth!) And because Star Blazers had shown in major cities all over the USA, there were hundreds of youngsters from one end of the country to the other itching to get their hot little hands on tapes of this additional content!
And that's the main way that organized anime fandom in the USA really kicked into high gear. There were anime fans before us, of course, but there was never so much impetus to get more tapes from Japan because with those other earlier shows like Speed Racer and Astroboy, what was broadcast was pretty much *all there was*! There wasn't some secret cache of another final "Speed Racer" season out there we needed to find. But "Star Blazers" put hundreds and hundreds of American youngsters on a quest for more content!
And some of the people involved in those clubs, running chapters, mailing tapes, etc. went on to start what are now the huge anime cons: first Project A-Kon in Texas (started by folks who had run the Dallas branch of the "Earth Defence Force" club), Anime Expo (started by people from the University of California anime clubs), Otakon (folks from several northeastern USA C/FO chapters), etc. If you check my channel, one of my oldest videos (from 2007!) was of a friend of mine doing cosplay as "Leader Desslok" at AnimeCon 1991 in San Jose, California -- the convention which was the predecessor to the first Anime Expo in 1992! Yup -- it's gratifying to see how big and popular anime and anime fandom has become in the USA, beyond the dreams of most of us weeaboomers back in the day! We couldn't have imagined being able to live stream anime video in 1080p resolution or more to your home computer with high quality English subtitles almost concurrently with its broadcast in Japan! In no small part because we didn't have internet, or home computers, most of us! It wasn't until after Star Blazers had been running for a year or 2 that I got my first home computer -- a Commodore VIC-20! There was no way computers back then would have been able to play video! We were happy to be able to play Space Invaders or just learn to write simple programs in BASIC!
@@Rheinhard That's fucking crazy. I've heard of Yamato before, and I had queued it to watch someday, but I haven't really been watching much anime, so I don't know if that day will come lol. Thanks for typing all of that, I read everything and it was super fascinating.
But now, even as a decades-long anime fan, how did you find yourself in the VTuber fandom? I know that they go hand in hand, especially with their presence in conventions, but isn't the whole thing a bit tacky and cringe for an older person? Most of the time it's like that even for the younger people.
@@sandenson If you're limited to the usual streaming services, classic Yamato may be a little hard to find. But luckily one of the few positive side benefits of Sony having bought both Funimation and Crunchyroll is that now "Space Battleship Yamato 2199", the recent remake series, is easily watchable on Crunchyroll. And I am pleased to attest that it is is a near universal consensus of oldtimer fans that 2199 is, simply put, the BEST. REMAKE. EVER. My Desslok cosplayer friend (referenced in my previous comment) and I did panels at a number of anime cons in the past going over in precise degrees, minutes, and seconds of latitude and longitude exactly how fantastic it is. Sadly the followup series, 2202, while still pretty impressive, just doesn't hang together quite as well as 2199 IMHO. But the more recent series 2205 and the currently running REBEL 3199 (of which only the first 2 episodes are out so far) are a lot better story-wise, and I like where they're going.
As to your second paragraph: it depends on what you mean by "VTuber fandom"... I have never watched a full 2+ hour VTuber VOD (and almost certainly never will). This is largely because it seems that almost all VTuber content is them sitting around playing video games. I thought the concept of sitting around watching OTHER people play video games was one of the dumbest fucking things I'd ever heard of back when Pewdiepie was getting big. I have no interest in that whatsoever. (In related news, it's also the case that the last serious video game I played was one of the sequels of MYST. I just don't care about modern games.)
The only thing I ever watch of VTubers is clips. I was introduced to them by one of my friends in north Jersey who's more into them and seems to watch them pretty obsessively. I don't mind watching short stream excerpts where that one funny thing happens. (You know, like Dokibird reacting to that guy asking the other girl whether she's still dating... One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life, that made me laugh so hard I almost cried, was the old clip of Pikamee trying to explain to Tomoshika what a hands job is in English...) And, as you observe, if you watch anime related content on TH-cam, sooner or later the Algorithm is gonna start shoving some VTuber content into your feed.
I do admit that, as an old, I am finding the increasing presence of VTubers at anime cons an annoyance. It almost seems a misnomer to call it "Anime Expo" anymore, from what I understand, it's more like "VTuber Expo". I remember when anime cons were focused mainly on getting the anime directors, character designers, and voice actors from Japan as the primary guests. These days it seems like there's very little of that anymore, and it's all about "professional cosplayers", music acts, American voice actors (which, save for the ones who did Star Blazers 45 years ago, I also don't care about), and VTubers. But I am also grown up enough to admit that, basically, anime cons are not FOR me and my generation any more. And that's ... OK. Sic transit gloria mundi.
My generation helped build American anime fandom from essentially nothing; started conventions, made the first fansubs, started the first anime import and translation companies... and look at where we are now. I can still watch just about anything I want in fantastic resolution whenever I like, subbed or dubbed, and stream with remote friends all over the country and the world. I'm good. It's time for my generation to get out of the way and let things change.
As an old, I also have experience with several of the VERY old-line literary SF conventions (including literally THE longest running con in the nation and possibly the world, Philcon, the Philadelphia Science Fiction Convention, which has been running since 1937). My friend and are I are scheduled to give some panels on the anime track there, including one on the current state of Star Blazers. But unlike AX and the other large anime cons, those old time SF cons are all DYING. The average attendee age has got to be in the late-60s at the very least. And this is because, unlike the anime cons I've been talking about, those cons are VERY resistant to change. The senior leadership of many of these cons was very resistant to even having any anime programming at them AT ALL for decades (which is, in no small part, why the anime cons got their start -- people like my friend got tired of running small anime rooms at these old cons and being shit on by the con committee, and so they decided to branch out and make their own conventions dedicated entirely to anime). After having moved away for many years, I am now back in the area attending Philcon again and it never ceases to amaze me how little it has changed since back in the 80s (except for the increasing decrepitude of its attendees). The exact same kinds of panels and programming, even the exact same plastic racks to hold freebie flyers, still being put up by the same guy that was doing it in 1985. As such, these cons are not drawing in ANY new, younger people, and so its attendee base is literally dying off. I know of one or two other similar cons in New York state which have already died out and closed. While some of the changes of anime cons since back in my day irritate me, the fact that these changes help guarantee that they'll keep running for years into the future, drawing new younger attendees in vast numbers, means that those cons will probably outlive me, unlike Philcon; and that is something to be glad of.

Having watched and followed the entire thing from the pilot episode, yeah, it has quite a few problems. Honestly, I find some of the fan content and just speculation based on the show to be more entertaining by several factors, because there are a lot of interesting things about the world that have a lot of potential, but that the show never commits to, or botches the execution of in a way that seems needlessly shallow.
