I love this series and this interaction between Kiyo and Mokomo. I especially love how carefully fleshed out Ai Hoshimoto's character Momoko is, and she isn't so one dimensional and isn't written off as being difficult or a diva.

The greatest thing about this scene is that Momoko recognises the same dedication of spirit in Kiyo's work as a makanai, and it inspires her to change how she thinks about her own work.
The whole "maybe you are my competition after all 🤨" bit from Momoko at the end is what seals it and surprises her - Kiyo's friend isn't there yet, she needs more time, practice and experience, but Kiyo is already there in her own way.
      Great writing.
I hope we can have more manga adaptations like this from Netflix.
No more Japanese -> Western adaptations for the love of all that's holy is the main thing - can you imagine this series translated into western centric culture and themes? 😱😱😱😱
I wish we could get a full blown Japanese live action adaptation of Ghost In The Shell.

@@mnomadvfx it's impossible for the West to adapt something like this faithfully in spirit - only Japan has this stoic, jarring respect for its own culture from another time, neither pining for philosophical closure nor nitpicking its practical relevance for conflict's sake, never asking burning dramatic questions or rising impossible stakes/social criticism for spectacle creep as has become the knee-jerk formula for most Western dramas.
Everything about this adaptation is done in silent, reverent observation - it is what it is. There are so many social and gender issues beneath the surface of geisha/maiko/geiko culture from its heyday, but all of that is set aside so that we can enjoy something that is almost lost to time, except for the passion of those who seek to support and preserve it. The drama silently and calmly invites us to observe something culturally resplendent, knowing we have questions about the problems that might sit beneath the surface, but ask politely that we discard them so we can enjoy artful culture for its own sake. Leave your world weariness at the door and immerse yourself here for a while, and let someone else's passion and experience - from literally within the bubble of Gion - give you escape for a while.
So much of the cinematography, too, is inspired by Yasujiro Ozu whose calm, still and geometric shots peer into "modern" mundane life from the mid-20th century as Japan shed its wartime sense of tradition and moved into the modern age - itself a juxtaposition of a respect for the old through the lens of the new.

Slicing the carrots on alternating diagonals not only looks attractive, but increase the amount of surface area exposed to the broth, so they can flavour the soup more strongly without being overcooked! I love the "not enough" portion joke. Momoko has a sly sense of humour!

There's also the same scene in the anime version but Kiyo was making Tonjiru not Cream Stew on that one.

Yes! I've never seen carrots (or anything else) sliced that way. Makes me want to try it. Looks a bit easier than slicing or dicing!

This is such a sweet series. At first, I could not figure out why Mokomo would consider Kiyo as a rival, then I learned that when sisters are paired it is a sisterhood for life until one of them dies. Kiyo was already Sumire's sister. I love all of the characters and the casting was brilliant.
