Older I get, the more I love small cc bikes and man does the Monkey and the CT125 got that cool right now. I love the exhaust too, all 8 horses screaming as you motor along with a smile on your face!
Fun video! I use my Monkey mostly on the ORV trails here in Michigan and I find your review spot on. The 14 tooth front sprocket makes second gear much more useable.

Love your synopsis. I took the same rte. I bought the Monkey for cruising around town and the mountain roads in Colorado. The thing weighs 240lbs. Then I picked up a TW200 for more off-road adventures. TW weights 290ish. Both are way more convenient to pull out of the garage and go. Both fit in the back of a pickup or travel van. You can load up your camping van with either bike get to campsite and continue to explore on your bike. Awesome machines for what they were built for.
Love the videos on the Monkey bike and your thoughts on selecting it and what you get up to going forward. Got to say I am a little jealous as although we have some great scenery in the UK we don't have the off road places you can ride to explore and go camp.

I had a Hoinda 50cc mini trail bike while still living in the Philippines in the late 70s. Even with its tiny 10 inch fat knobby tires, it can easily climb hills and can even cross shallow streams Top speed was only about 40 KPH but it was utterly reliable and perhaps more fun riding it than the new bigger and faster 125.
Hahaha..Uncle voodoo, hit the trail on his hog .sounds like that's the perfect amount of exercise for us old guys...what fun, and it's a great excuse to get out and keep active..great video
I like your whole rationalization process that brought you to the Monkey. I've been going back-and-forth between the Honda Monkey and a Honda Cub Trail CT-125. Thank you for the video. I hope you have a lot of good times.
They both have strengths and weaknesses, I basically look at them like this- if you want a play bike, get the monkey. If you want a camp/travel bike get the CT125.
I guess it all depends on what your definition of adventure bike is. My buddy has an African Twin. Him and his wife load that thing down with tents, cooking gear, clothes, and whatever else you need to go camping. He takes 2 weeks off work and starts riding and tries to stay off paved roads the entire way. He has a blast. I am a HUGE fan of small bikes. I have an original Monkey, CT70, CT90 and an RV90. I love them. But they are not at heart an "adventure bike". I have owned numerous dual sports. CRF250L, KLX250S, DRZ400s, and an XR650L. All great bikes. My problem with them is I can't ride them more than an hour on the street without hurting so bad I can hardly move! I believe Adventure bikes of all types are intended to be 90/10 or 95/5 bikes. They are mostly on the road, and the off road portion is for gravel roads, and groomed trails. I would not want to take my Versys-X anywhere that I took my dual sports. I know guys ride them hard, and take them places that dirt bikes go, but its not the right tool for the job in my opinion. I have I was going to seriously try to solo adventure ride I would buy a KTM640 adventure. 340lbs. 100 lbs heavier than a Monkey bike! Good comfort and more off road capable than a normal adventure bike.
There is no better place to ride a Monkey than where I live. In Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ, there are more Pine Trees per square mile than any place on the planet; not just the United States. Endless trails and winding hilly roads. This place is a Monkey owners paradise.
The CT70 never had a dual range gear box. The C90 had the dual range gearbox. The new Honda Trail 125 does not have the dual range gearbox! It's gear lowered and seems to be most comfortable around 40-45MPH. Not ideal. My 73 CT90 will run 50-55 in high range.

One of good things about Monkey is that you get forgiven stuff you would not get if on big bike. This bike is something like Volvo among cars. Other drivers will not do you some bullshit in stead give you smile. That's fine feeling, you feel good if you know you are perceived by others positively.

Enjoyed your video and the ADV bike breakdown comparison. So true. Heard you mention Bark Busters for your Monkey. I ordered the T Rex Barbusters myself. Installation is easy enough, however I noticed much wiggle play with the clutch lever afterwards. I had to go buy a bigger 10mm spacer from the hardware store and cut it down to size and install it instead. It solved the clutch lever play. I let T Rex know of the issue but they did not seem very concerned about it. Just sharing in case you were looking into those.

Those roads look like a ton of fun, such a great bike for that type of riding. The RS3 is a good choice, I run Big Blocks instead of the Maxxis but both are so much better than stock when you're looking for even a little dirt.
I found a couple moto dealers who happen to have all these miniMotos, 5 to chose from. I was able to check the TNT Bennelli 135, z125 Kawasaki, Honda Navi and Grom and the sales man mentions "oh yeah, we have a Monkey" ....It brought such joy and feelings from childhood riding the old 70cc ...I left a deposit for the new Black one

Monkeys are expensive..4,800.00 out the door on a 2022. I also have a Yamaha TW 200 also a great bike! for a few hundred dollars more you can get the TW 200, but i love the monkey also
It looks like it could use a skid plate. The exhaust looks very vulnerable. Been thinking about one for a while this video pushed me even closer who knows maybe even today my dealer has two.
Understand the suspension limitations that come with only 4 inches of travel. Have you tried playing with tire pressure to soften initial impacts. On my TW, on rocky roads i aired down to 11 pounds, it helped. Am giving the Monkey serious consideration, mrgizmow.
I think you have your settings wrong no way that looks like 108OP it looks blurred! I think its the FPS you need it at 60FPS if going at speed! I use a go pro hero 3 black and has far better footage than in your video!

thanks for the comment. the pipe does get hotter to the touch than the stock pipe but I do not notice heat when riding while seated (even in shorts). when standing my leg is in constant contact with it but I haven't scorched any clothing nor felt the heat when doing so (haven't tried that in shorts though). that was one of main my worries when I bought the pipe but its actually better than I expected. actually- at one point early in this video I do a u turn on the gravel road, that is because I realized my hat was missing. I rode all the way home looking for it (favorite hat lol) only to find it caught in the pipe heat shield, it didn't even put a mark on the hat. I expected it to be melted when I pulled it out.

My girlfriend and I are looking at getting 2 monkey bikes. They look like a blast. Being 58 years old and an experienced dirt rider, I haven’t ridden in a while but I know I miss it, a lot! Ive tried my buddies monkey bike and really like it. Wish they were a less expensive. I wish Honda would’ve done something different with the pipe for clearance. After upgrading to the Yoshi pipe, did you have to change any adjustments to the motor? Thank you
I love my blue Monkey! I use it for road riding/trail riding about 50/50 down here in Alabama. Which tires are you using? I’ve been looking at the Shinko mobbers, but I’m nervous about losing comfort on pavement? The stock tires have pretty much handled whatever I’ve needed off road, but could have been a little better. But on the road they are great, so I’m torn which direction to go?

I think I just melted my monkey 181 riding it from salt lake city to moab. Hit near 100 degrees. Mechanic is going a compression n leak down test today. I'm trying to set up t monkey to handle long trips going 55 to 60 mph all day. Its questionable at this point. Ping me back with your email if u wld like to share ideas. Like u I'm in my fifties but I have 50 lbs more body mass
im setting mine up for long trips at lesser speeds (30-45mph) as im trying to link up gravel roads. im trying to keep my 55-60mph pavement runs as short as I can.
The resale price is fantastic. Honda mini's have always held there value. That 400 dollar machine was only 50ccs with a top speed of 25 or so. It's hard to compare them for value.

The Monkey is ridiculous amounts of fun to ride. Rode one on PCH (aka route 1) from Huntington Beach to Dana Point. No issues keeping up with traffic.

Dead ends make great camp sites... That bikes kind of noisy when it's in the woods. You're not going to be very stealthy.

No. Might have a mixture of analysis peralysis. Lol The Honda ADV-150 is on the radar, now. All have a niche and legendary Honda reliability.

I totally agree with your choice of motorcycle, i just would upgrade the clutch/tires/ chain/sprockets/ carry extra fuel

Uncle Voodoo there is a video on here of a guy who fits Mnthbx shocks to his monkey and he’s over 300lbs. The shocks don’t bottom out at all.

I remember the original. I must admit I was attracted to the Monkey. I decided to buy the RE Himalayan.
It looks like it could use a skid plate. The exhaust looks very vulnerable. Been thinking about one for a while this video pushed me even closer who knows maybe even today my dealer has two.
There are only 2 skid plates available for it and neither are good. I just try pick the best lines I can to avoid trouble.

no, you don't have to make any changes after installing the pipe. just let it idle for 10mins, shut it off, then restart and it should be good to go.

There isn’t much room to work with but some sort of mud flap could work, just have to be careful of it get caught by the tire.

im setting mine up for long trips at lesser speeds (30-45mph) as im trying to link up gravel roads. im trying to keep my 55-60mph pavement runs as short as I can.

The resale price is fantastic. Honda mini's have always held there value. That 400 dollar machine was only 50ccs with a top speed of 25 or so. It's hard to compare them for value.
