Ever since Charlie Cox debuted as Matt Murdock on Netflix’s Daredevil, Marvel fans have been clamoring to see the Man Without Fear fight alongside the Avengers.
In 2016, there were even rumors he’d appear in Civil War. In fact, if Marvel couldn’t negotiate sharing Spider-Man with Sony, there’s a chance that might’ve even happened. But it wasn’t until 2021’s No Way Home that we first got to see Matt Murdock in the MCU’s prime timeline.
It took another year before we saw him in costume as Daredevil. His first masked appearance in Earth-616 was on the Disney+ series She-Hulk, setting the stage for his own solo series. That show, Born Again, will debut in 2024, and will feature his old Netflix nemesis Wilson Fisk, played perfectly by Vincent D’Onofrio.
Seeing Daredevil in the MCU was a BIG moment for fans of the character and Netflix show. But a lot of them may have been surprised to see his costume. Instead of dark gym sweats or his traditional red outfit, Daredevil was wearing a certain shade of yellow. [CLIP: Gold Devil]
And you know what? It kinda worked. But still, it was a bit surprising to see. So today I’m going to answer a question a lot of people have been asking since Matt’s She-Hulk appearance.
Doug (confidently): When is dinner?
Ryan: What? No. The question I’m talking about is: Why is Daredevil Yellow?
I’m going to talk about the yellow costume’s origin in early Daredevil comics and why Marvel probably decided to switch it up for the MCU. I’m also going to talk about what Matt’s NEXT costume might look like-in Born Again, or even beyond in Avengers: Kang Dynasty. Before I do, let me get one other question out of the way.
Doug (confidently): What is for dinner?

No, the OTHER question you might have is why I keep referring to Daredevil’s costume as yellow. Unless your TV is stuck using the Amaro filter or something, you’d probably say Daredevil’s She-Hulk appearance is more gold than yellow.
And you wouldn’t be wrong. It WAS pretty much gold, along with Daredevil’s traditional red as an accent color. The reason I keep saying yellow is because these colors are a deliberate homage to Daredevil’s yellow origins. [CLIP: Simpsons “Yellowest”]
This is important. This original yellow costume gives a lot of insight into what Marvel has planned for Daredevil in the MCU-whether he’s wearing gold, canary, lemon, or any other shade of yellow.
Doug: Mellow yellow.
Ryan: Sure. But Daredevil is anything but mellow. [CLIP: Matt wailing]
Daredevil was created in 1964 by Stan Lee and Bill Everett, with Jack Kirby providing a lot of design input. When he debuted in Daredevil #1, he wore a costume that was yellow, with black and red accents.
This original yellow costume was clearly modeled on circus acrobats. His name after all refers to stunt performers known as daredevils. Men (and women) without fear who would make death-defying jumps and other dangerous feats for audiences.
Even The Simpsons acknowledged this in one of their earliest episodes. Bart’s hero is a motorcycle daredevil named Lance Murdock. [CLIP: Lance Murdock]
He’s obviously inspired by Evel Knievel, one of the most famous real life daredevils ever. But Daredevil debuted before Evel became a household name, so it’s fitting that his Simpsons counterpart shares a name with the Marvel character.
In his origin story, Matt makes his suit out of his father’s boxing robes, which is where the colors come from. Matt’s Dad, Battlin’ Jack Murdock, didn’t want his son to use physical violence. 11:25 Correct me if this is wrong, but I’ve always considered *Elektra* to be Daredevil’s Mary Jane, with Karen serving as his Gwen Stacy. Regardless, I do think Daredevil will get a new suit at some point.
Yeah that is a good point. Although it's more like Elektra being his Black Cat vs Karen as his Gwen. So far I don't feel like Matt has a romantic interest that he can't live without but I could be wrong. I don't remember his reaction to Elektras death('s) that well.

It would, but it would still be a dick move because Deborah Ann Woll is an amazing actress and it would be extremely disrespectful to her if they just decide to continue the show without her or kill her off-screen or pretend like she never existed.
We can't have a silly Daredevil because then we'd have to have a silly Punisher and what an absolute war crime that would be to the two Netflix shows.

Even in the comics. Daredevil is like, the first hero to deduce peter's identity (which isn't retconned out somehow) because of his heartbeat. Tony works as Peter's mentor in the MCU well enough, but a more comic accurate mentor would have been Reed Richards, and then barring that, Daredevil.
I heard he was going to wear a black and red suit. And considering there's going to be 18 episodes, I think the show will be gritty, and try to emulate the Netflix show

I can’t see Disney making 18 episodes of any of the shows they have on their platform! Not saying that the shows aren’t worthy of 18 episodes, I’m just saying, with all the marvel shows and Star Wars shows, Disney has yet to release a series with more than 12 episodes, other than the andor series! And Tony Gilroy blew that show out of the water! In my opinion, which I know many don’t agree with. out of all the shows recently created for the Disney+ platform nothing tops andor!!

I actually laughed out loud during the blue hallway "fight" on She-Hulk. I was expecting another brutal hallway fight scene, and that was a nice way to "subvert expectations."

After all, the entire MCU is NOT exactly taken directly from the pages of the comics we've already read; Kevin Feige has already subverted our expectations several times and it has worked, for the most part. There's just no reason to go all "Rian Johnson" on Matt Murdock, though...

DDs yellow suit was a nice footnot, like Iron mans grey armor and Hulks grey skin or Caps triangle Shield. its early days, fine tuning but crops up over the years.
Since Daredevil Born Again is apparently supposed to lead into MCU Spider Man 4, imagine if Spider Man and the Defenders are fighting the Scorpion and the Spider Slayers and Daredevil's yellow costume gets damaged prompting him to upgrade to the armored suit right before The Kang Dynasty. That'd be cool.

I think if they do how the original show did with Matt, he was funny but Daredevil is serious. Matt has charisma and personality etc. Daredevil gets down to business lol. Matt can be goofy all he wants because there was several show moments outside of being daredevil where he was goofy and cracking jokes. But as daredevil he was mostly serious.

Dare Devil has always been my favorite(X-Men close 2nd). I can't wait.
I always thought one of the reasons for back to red and gold was because of the Iron Man connection. It is a familiar look from an MCU standpoint if you are going full hero.
I do not think he will be silly now, I think he has not yet experienced that dark and grim stuff that we saw on Netflix.
Daredevil should team up with Spiderman and Deadpool.
Iron Fist should pay a visit to Bruce Banner or Wong/Strange help out Shang Chi and Winter Soldier

Hi... so I have alot to catch up on it appears. I stopped watching DD after season 2, just never made it back. Is there a ... timeline or series of events from different shows to catch up on what Charlie Cox DD has been doing from A to Z? Or at least to where it is currently at? So I dont watch out of order? Watch order (timeline) is Daredevil season 1 and 2. Then continue with Defenders and finish with Daredevil season 3. Then he appears in Spiderman NWH and She-Hulk.
As much as I loved seeing DD in She-Hulk, all I can think about is how damaged his ears were after She-Hulk clapped him. He made a throwaway joke about how he _used_ to have enhanced hearing.... He was fine after, but ear damage is permanent! There's no coming back!

I seriously hope they just keep the same tones and styles as the Netflix series. I don’t want another generic “haha” marvel hero to add to the rest of the flavorless ones we have, keep Daredevil the way that was working perfectly before. Make him dark, make him grim, we need the dramatic weight!

All these shows were really fun to watch when Netflix was the go-to place for a new generation of streaming shows.
But since all these IP holders all tried to make their own clone of Netflix without realising the obvious truth that it was the value proposition Netflix had which made all this popular, than the simple fact of being able to get it online, it's all become completely disinteresting.
As a consequence there's nothing good on Netflix anymore, and no one has any interest in paying multiple subscription fees for all these clone services, so we're back to square one with torrenting once again.
It's a shame because it's not writing, or production, or storytelling which has caused the collapse of streaming, it's corporate greed, shareholders, and a failure to realise that if they don't put their content on Netflix, no one is going to watch it or indeed pay for it.
There's a reason all these streaming companies don't own their own cinema chains, it's because they wouldn't get enough revenue showing only their own garbage to support it's infrastructure.
Disney, Paramount, Apple, Hulo, HBO, NBC, etc. They all think they are Netflix and believe the customer has an interest in paying a monthly fee just to see their IP.

As for Daredevil, well you pulled that from Netflix and I can't even remember most of the plot anymore, so again it's trying to cash in on an audience which no longer exists because access to the content no longer exists without piracy. I already paid to watch it when it was on Netflix, I'm not going to pay to watch it again just so I can catch up to paying to watch more.
FFS fractured streaming has ruined the ability for anything to become a classic, as the classic requires a constant subscription for it to ever become popular again.

I enjoy this channel but it's mostly a Marvel cheerleader. DC isn't their normal focus.
Gold isn't a color. It's a metallic effect combining yellows, oranges, browns, and reflective effect. If you subtract metallic effects, gold is just yellow. That's why it's hard to represent in matte materials like fabric.
currently rewatching daredevil. rewatching him on the netflix show compared to she hulk has me worried. we need daredevil to be rated R especially if the punisher is in it. hope they do it justice

Agree completely. While the video itself isn’t negatively describing his new suit, the title itself made me not want to click on the video.

Title aside, thanks Ryan (and writers!) for not making the video itself negative and instead focus on the narrative importances of his suit change!
Ideally (for me) the series would take place during the blip. Show Kingpin taking advantage of a world in disarray and Matt and a few others being the only defenders against his schemes. Punisher going about justice his way and their clash.
We get some Bullseye, we get some Typhoid Mary; Matt dealing with the loss of his anchors in Foggy and Karen. Red suit for this time period.
Toward the end of the season is the culmination of that arc and we get the return of the lighter side of his life post-blip. He’s now seeking balance and finding the brighter side of life and that results in his adoption of the more colorful suit. Karen and Foggy grow closer due to their shared difficulties in adapting to the time jump and Matt moves on… maybe the last episode ends with him getting Leapfrog as a client.
We'd love to see his stint with the Widow represented in the MCU! :)
I’m writing this before I watched the whole video but as someone who so loved the red helpmeet which looked so cool snd matched the devil of Hell’s Kitchen my guess is the only reason is they really changed it because they wanted to difference it. But via his she hulk it was quite jarring

I think you are wrong on this one. The Netflix series already went through his formative years with a fine tooth comb- no way Disney is going to rehash that. While I loved Daredevil Yellow, I doubt very much the series will be based on it. It's most likely going to be based on Born Again! Heavily modified- just as the Infinity War movie was heavily modified from Infinity Gauntlet. I also totally believe the gold and maroon costume was just a joke (DD's worst costume), since She-Hulk was a comedy. I assume he will immediately go back to red for Born Again. Cheers :)

I don't like the yellow/gold costume. Hoping for Red or Black switch at some point. Some costumes just don't translate well from comic page to cinema screen. It's why we never saw Wolverine in yellow and black.

As far as a love interest dying to develop the main character… That always happens its only become an issue now in modern politics. What if a female character lost her significant other to advance her story… No one would bat an eye
If they're basing it off of Daredevil yellow and Karen Page dies in that series and the woman who plays Karen Page is not confirmed to come back but punisher is and in the punisher series him and Karen Page and get really really close maybe that explains why the punisher is going to be in the new Daredevil series

Marvel Comics got it right when they put that yellow and red circus suit in mothballs after 11 issues or so, and went with the iconic monochrome red for the next 50 years or so. This nod to the past is okay for a novelty, but get black to red.

That red n yellow suit has always been atrocious. “The devil of Hell’s Kitchen” fighting in the shadows… in a ketchup n mustard suit! 😒 dumbest thing ever. Just because something is the first or comic accurate doesn’t make it good.

Born again could start with matt in a good place of his life. Fighting street thugs while solving some cases, but then in the mid season karen dies and everything spirals out of control. Thats when he comes back with a black outfit
