What protest is designed to not be distracting? It’s a peaceful protest. Glad it prompted the discussion amongst teammates. Sadly, ppl forget that it’s in fact just as American as apple pie. There’s nothing “anti-American ” in the kneel, nor is the cause one teammate’s v. another’s. It is to prompt a deeper understanding of how we can improve as a nation. I agree most of the world calls this sport football. But in the U.S., *soccer* is overwhelmingly the name of choice. That doesn't make it wrong; it's just an annoying fact for those of us who prefer to call it FOOTBALL.

You’re missing the point of a captain on a soccer team. A “captain” doesn’t tell people what to do. A soccer captain doesn’t have more power amongst the team than other players. It doesn’t turn her into the boss of the other women when she gets named captain.
Smart move on Carli, the next time the US WS faces the rest of the World Women's soccer teams, they will be crushed. Every year, they get better and better. Women in other countries were not allowed to play soccer until recently and even then there is not much support from their goverments. Most of them started playing while in college as opposed to the US that start playing at 4 or five years old. Furthermore, 90% of the soccer expenses in the US are paid by the government. For example, when my son started playing, he started in AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) and we as parents only paid $60 per season and that included all uniforms, balls, etc.

OK, Einstein. I get so tired of explaining this to either Wokesters or Trumptards, depending on the story. The First Amendment only covers GOVERNMENT sanctions. If Carli Lloyd, as captain of the team, has an issue with Rapinoe protesting, she has every right to confront her on it. And if she had the coach's backing, the coach would have every right to remove Rapinoe from the squad, if she insisted on continuing her protests.
The First Amendment protects citizens from Government sanctions (like fines, imprisonment, censorship, etc.). For example, if you're old enough, the Nixon Administration tried to censor the publication of what became known as "The Pentagon Papers" (look it up for details) in the NYT and WaPo. They lost.
However, the First Amendment does not protect somebody from the CONSEQUENCES of their speech or actions. For example, from that same era, Anita Bryant (a popular entertainer of the time) was the spokesperson for the Florida Orange Growers Association ("Come to the Florida sunshine tree...again, look it up for details). They fired her after she made some very public, very homophobic remarks. Yes, she exercised her right of free speech, but the First Amendment could not protect her from the consequences of her speech.
If (which didn't happen in this case), the Coach would have told Rapinoe to knock that s*** off and benched her after she refused to, that would NOT be a violation of her First Amendment right to free speech. The benching would be the consequences, and the coach would be well within his rights to do so.
I understand that among you Wokesters, there is this belief that "social justice" can override the Constitution, but that's not how it works.

The last sporting event I went to was at Twickenham to watch the Barbarians Ladies against Springbok Ladies. At the anthems, whilst some of the Baa Baa players were up and down like fiddlers elbows, the South Africans, black and white stood still. I think they fall under the bracket of 'educated about racism', so I'm happy to go with that.

I call BS. If she was really a captain of the team and a player is not conducive to team integrity you DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Sounds to me like she is covering her ass so she won't be associated with it, not very captain like. I have been a part of a couple teams where the players, not the coaches, kicked players off the team. Sometimes in a leadership.position you have to do uncomfortable things and make ruthless decisions. If you don't understand that then you can never be an affective leader.

What protest is designed to not be distracting? It’s a peaceful protest. Glad it prompted the discussion amongst teammates. Sadly, ppl forget that it’s in fact just as American as apple pie. There’s nothing “anti-American ” in the kneel, nor is the cause one teammate’s v. another’s. It is to prompt a deeper understanding of how we can improve as a nation. You can’t do that if you’re hiding from public view, as is often suggested.

I agree most of the world calls this sport football. But in the U.S., *soccer* is overwhelmingly the name of choice. That doesn't make it wrong; it's just an annoying fact for those of us who prefer to call it FOOTBALL.

You’re missing the point of a captain on a soccer team. A “captain” doesn’t tell people what to do. A soccer captain doesn’t have more power amongst the team than other players. It doesn’t turn her into the boss of the other women when she gets named captain.

Smart move on Carli, the next time the US WS faces the rest of the World Women's soccer teams, they will be crushed. Every year, they get better and better. Women in other countries were not allowed to play soccer until recently and even then there is not much support from their goverments. Most of them started playing while in college as opposed to the US that start playing at 4 or five years old. Furthermore, 90% of the soccer expenses in the US are paid by the government. For example, when my son started playing, he started in AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) and we as parents only paid $60 per season and that included all uniforms, balls, etc.
