I consider Carli one of the top 3 best US female players which represented the USA with class and professionalism. It's funny watching this interview with Alexi Lalas who did nothing but advocate for less playing time for Carli for the last 4 or 5 years of her career in favor of younger players. However, Carli's resiliency and ability to come up big in crucial matches proved him wrong over and over again making her the top female CLUTCH player this team has ever seen. Good luck to Carli and I hope she is enjoying her retirement!!

Besides the point, but Mary Wambach is the best Center Forward the US has ever produced. It’s really unfair to target the players when these players don’t select themselves for the team. It’s the Federation that keeps picking the best stories instead the of best players. Blame the Federation for also hiring a gutless gruber to be the head coach. Someone needs to explain why the coach isn’t American when America has had the best women’s soccer for 50+ years? Is Rapinoe still good enough to make the team at 38? If she is then that’s an indictment on the Federation for not grooming her replacement 10 years ago!

They specifically rejected the mens deal in favor of less risk and more guaranteed benefits... Then after winning realized they could make more under the men's contract. Complained they weren't getting pay and tried to void the agreed contract. Now they split money from the men whilst still having the benefits the men don't...

Lalas twice mentioned that the announcement by USNWT team meant that the men’s team acceptance of the agreement was a fait accompli. That the women’s team would not have made the announcement if the men’s team had not already accepted the terms.
    This is an incorrect assumption.
The reality is that the announcement was purposefully meant to apply pressure to the men’s team in the court of public opinion. Now, if the men do not negotiate their CBA with the women’s interest in mind, they will be branded misogynistic, sexist, etc…..

Apparently the culture was so toxic and players were so focused on their brand that they went out and won another World Cup in 2019. Lloyd grumbled about her lack of playing time during the 2019 WC, but by the time the tournament started Ellis had already made up her mind that Lavelle was going to get those minutes instead.
Whatever issues Lloyd has with Ellis, Morgan and especially Rapinoe, the record shows that, toxic culture or not, Ellis's belief in the squad she chose for the 2019 WC was the correct call.

Carli Lloyd quit soccer at the time when the US was dominant and the rest was playing catch up. The way the game is played now is very different from 3 years ago. Look at this WC: Jamaica sends Brazil home, Japan wins over Spain, Colombia beats Germany, South Africa kicks Italy out. European teams have tons of good competitions: Champions League, European Cup. European Leagues are growing and getting better. Not an excuse, but our young players don't get that type of exposure, while young players like Oberdorf, and Walsh get it constantly. That is an advantage for European teams and it shows.
Regarding the toxic culture she is referring to, I believe adult women have the ability to compartmentalize and leave their business off the field. Yes, they make commercials, they get endorsements, they find ways to make more money, it is all part of the game. The fight for equal pay was picking during the 2019 world cup and, still, the US was a solid, almost unbeatable team. It was during that time and the 2020 Olympics that Lloyd started to complain about her playing time and started throwing shades at coaches and players alike. She had some weird actions like running after they lost to Sweden and expecting her teammates to do the same. It seems to me she was the "my way or the highway" type of player/person. That conduct is also detrimental to the rest of the group. Her attitude was part of the toxicity she likes to talk about. Also, as far as I know, she didn't say NO when her paycheck came after the equal-pay agreement. Other player's exposure brought her big benefits, and while those players were in courtrooms and offices she was silent. You don't get to enjoy that win and then trash the people who made it possible.

Sounds like you have an issue with her and it shows through your bias statement. Yes the game evolved but the US usually do the same. One thing she said which is very interesting (and goes unmentioned a lot) is the team's financial success is contingent on winning. One thing the USWNT (and even the Canadian women's national team) could count on was continued success vis-a-vis their male counterparts to the point where the average person could name more female soccer players in either country than the men. In a bittersweet way, that era is, unfortunately, looking to be coming to a close as both the Canadian and American's men's soccer teams field the best teams they've ever had and are hosting the '26 World Cup. At the same time, the rest of the world is getting better at the women's game and so the dominance the U.S. once had is fading (see their failure to qualify for the gold medal game in Tokyo).
Unfortunately, for women's sports, people seem to like dominance; the Williams sisters, the hype around Michelle Wie in women's golf, UConn in women's college basketball and, of course, the USWNT. If they can no longer be that, Carli is right, they're going to be in a tougher situation.

Carli said that after 2015, the endorsements started coming in. And players started to think about, "how can I get an endorsement, build my brand?" and you know what, I get it. Those endorsements were probably worth as much as their paychecks, maybe more. And these players are not paid 10s of millions of dollars like the men. So for some of them, they started to focus more on that stuff. I think the same thing started happening this past season with FC Barcelona femení. After winning the treble in 2020-21, the amount of attention on them was insane, and the endorsements started flowing in. In 2021-22, you could tell players were trying to stand out individually more, also players were getting some endorsements here and there. For me personally, I thought it was a little sad. Barca's game is based on connection and sharing, and I felt that some of that went out the window with this new culture. In the end, they didn't end up winning the treble in 2021-22, and I don't know, but maybe part of that was because they moved away from what made their game magical.

Well, they went on to go just one game short of being undefeated last season and win the Women's Champions League again for their second title out of three straight appearances in the final. They also had a mind-boggling +108 goal difference in the league, having scored 118 goals while conceding only 10 in a 30-game season. That sort of dominance is to be enjoyed and celebrated, rather than be complained about because of not winning a treble. Same goes with the USWNT. They have been dominant for so long, when most other countries were not investing in women's soccer like the Unites States had been, yet all people can do is cry and complain as it becomes evident that the rest of the world is slowly catching up the USWNT and that they aren't always going to be as dominant as they once were.

Carly speaks of the toxic culture after 2015. She points out players fighting for endorsements, ie, she is speaking to Alex Morgan. But this is wholly unfair. This did not begin with Morgan, it began with Mia Hamm. Judy Foudy was instrumental in developing a soccer league and getting proper funding for the national team. (Remember the strike before the 99 World Cup?). So the distractions are not new, they have been with the team from the beginning. After Carly's phenomenal 2015 World Cup, she was over the next few years, slowly relegated to less playing time. By the 2019 World Cup, Jill Ellis did not start her, with, I think one exception. Carly admits to being bitter about it. But where women's soccer is today, financially, in no small way, can be attributed to Hamm and Morgan's marketability.

Carli seems bitter but has always had a negative tone throughout her career when she was not in the spotlight. When they cut her time playing after 2015 to make room for the next generation she got real bitter. A lot of the veteran players are too injured right now to play. Carli is and has been endorsed. Funny how that works for her. Abby Wombach was truly a Goat and easily let the newbie’s grow and play for the sake of the USWNT.

I don't blame them for chasing endorsements. How else were they gonna get paid? Carli had endorsements too, but I guess she feels like it didn't go to her head. All I know is Rapinoe was consistently one of the best players and sometimes the only generator of offense. If you're getting it done on the pitch who cares what you do off of it. The US lost because of older players like Carli who looked like statues on the pitch. They need to get younger, faster, more inventive.
