A few years ago, I bought several hundred fabric swatches at a thrift store, donated by an upscale interior designer. They are large swatches, about 10"X10", some bigger. They are very rich-looking, lots of embroidered and beaded silks, brocades, and high end fabrics I've never seen at JoAnn's. When I got home I looked up several of the designs and companies and found some of this sold for more than $100 per yard retail! I've been making fabric origami 3-D butterflies out of the swatches and I love how they turned out. I use glass beads to add sparkle and make their heads and bodies. It's an easy hand-sewing project I can take with me. I've been sewing them to brooch pins and hairclips, but now I'm going to add them to patchwork clothing pieces like this. I bought some 3-D embroidered rose and peony flower appliques from Temu for very cheap, and was shocked by how pretty and high quality they are. They go great with my fancy butterflies. I know people love to hate on Temu, but I'm poor and I love that I can buy useful tools and supplies for pennies on the dollar. As long as one doesn't give them their bank account info, they seem safe enough. I use Paypal to pay for online purchases and never had a problem in the 25 years I've used it.
How fun is that! I sure can relate to what you said about, over thinking on what people are going like… When ever I do that it seems the item doesn’t move quickly vs having fun & makin what you like❤ Love your channel and your also a wonderful person, you have inspired my unlike any one else. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity & great tutorials😊
You seriously rock! Love this so so much, thank you as always for sharing, and I will definitely enjoy doing something very similar! You really are the best at what you do!!!! ❤❤❤
I saw the vest and thought, cool, and then the opening shot showed what you started with and I thought "WOW!" I think you give us all a reminder, those older things we have are a perfect base for our new creations.
thank you for the speech of, not everyone liking our creations! I come across this, and dont let it discourage me, these are MY pieces of Art! oh my gosh, even a close family member said to me, maybe you are too old to wear that fashion! Ive loved this fashion FOREVER! but never knew how I could achieve it, Thank you Traci for the revive! Ive so become an upscaler! My eye catches everything at the thrift store, now!! love it!!
I love this vest so much, but I have to say that the black and pink outfit you are wearing is _gorgeous_ and so elegant you look like a glam movie star!! I LOVE your sense of style! I've always made clothes, since age 12 when I got my first sewing machine. Why put time and work into an outfit, just to look like someone else? I know you have never worried about going to a party and seeing someone wearing the same outfit as you! You, and your wonderful creations are unique. I am so happy to have found your channel. I'm getting inspired to start creating again, instead of just mending old clothes now that I'm old and rarely go anywhere. However, I'm "jonesing" for a big ol' creative session like I used to do with my ex-husband's darling grandchildren who I enjoyed teaching sewing and crafts. We had a blast making crazy stuff in what I called the "messy zone"! Spill some paint? Knock over a cup of glitter? No biggie! That's why my house has linoleum instead of carpet! I'll clean up later after the kiddos go home. Sadly, I don't get to see them anymore since the divorce, and they are adults now. I still love them with all my 💘, and I hope they have good memories of our time together. I need to find someone else's grandchildren to "borrow" since I'll never have my own. I can't be in full creativity mode until I have fabric and trims spread over the dining table, and I have to set up a folding table to hold even more stuff to choose from. In my 20s and 30s, I worked in various fashion industries, from a couture designer making custom sculpted suits for rich ladies circa 1980, to a high-end children's wear company whose clothes were sold at Neiman's, to having my own custom sewing business in the 90s. Over the years, my stash of everything sewing-related has grown to massive proportions! 20 years ago, an elderly female artist passed away who had an enormous amount of sewing and art supplies. Her daughter-in-law was in charge of clearing out her house, and she apparently despised her elderly artist MIL. She had thrown yards and yards of very nice quilting fabric into a dumpster, which I retrieved. It had a musty smell from storage, but after washing it, it was fine. She let me take all of it! Some of it was Liberty of London fine cotton prints that retail for @ $30 a yard!😯 My problem is having TOO MUCH materials and neat stuff to create with that it can be overwhelming! Good thing is I never need to go to the store because I have all the fabric, trims, lace, antique buttons (by the thousands!), patterns, thread, zippers, beads, etc. I could ever need. I've been trying to start a project with an "antique" Wrangler work shirt circa 1950s. It's wonderfully soft, has "fancy" pockets and pearl snaps... and a big ol' rip across the back. The man it belonged to died more than 50 years ago. The shirt has "personality" but it's about to be bestowed with "personality PLUS" once I start the appliques. I have some antique quilt squares made during 30s-40s from printed flour sacks and other cute vintage prints. I'm going to use a particularly pretty Dresden Plate patterned quilt "square" on the back of the shirt to cover that rip, and go from there, adding whatever whimsy comes to mind! This time I checked eBay to make sure the Wrangler shirt isn't very valuable first. I made a big mistake 32 years ago when I took my ex-husband's grandfather's 1940s era "Big E" one pocket Levi's jacket and upcycled it by replacing the torn-up back panel with a piece of an old velvet wall-hanging of palm trees and camels. I love the jacket and still wear it, but one just like it (except better condition) sold for $9,500 on eBay recently!! One that really was just like it before I "fixed" it and was full of holes sold for about $3000. OOPS!
So much fun and so inspiring! I am going to do this with some bits and pieces I’ve hung on to for decades…doilies both my grandmothers made, shirts from my Dad and grandfather, concert t-shirts, etc. I’m going to use your techniques and ideas to fashion all these treasures into something I can wear. Thank you so much!❤
I wish I lived near you! I'd love to have a friend who enjoys creative sewing like me. I have a crazy amount of fabric and supplies because I started sewing my own clothes 50 years ago. I would love to share my stash with another "fabric fiend"! I won't live long enough to use half of it. When I find nice fabric for cheap at thrift stores and yard sales, I'm compelled to buy it even if I have no idea what I'll do with it. I'll figure that out later, but for now I know I'll sleep better knowing that lovely piece of silk, or vintage brocade is safely stored in my sewing room, waiting for inspiration! Like you, I love to incorporate clothing bits once worn by loved ones, or t-shirts that have good memories attached. They make wonderful personal gifts that can't be bought! I made my sister some bowl cosies with old Sunbonnet Sue quilt squares our mom made when she was young (during the 1930s Depression when she lived in an orphanage), and the outside of the bowl is made from a very old, soft, faded pair of Levis I wore as a teen 50 years ago. Back in the 1970s, our town's Levis factory shut down and went overseas. I went to the closing sale and bought a roll of denim and several spools of the "official" gold Levis thread for topstitching, and I do double rows of topstitching over the denim side of the bowls to look like blue jeans. I sure wish we could share photos in comments! I'd love to see the wonderful things y'all create!
@LazyIRanch I'm in a facebook group Upcycled Clothing and Creations, I've mentioned it in some videos and there are quite a few people from here that have joined. You might want check it out.
@ I wish I had a sewing friend, too! I have quite a stash of stuff, as well. I agree, those gifts that are made with special fabric and other pieces are truly special. Wishing you all the best, and happy sewing. 😊
Thank you so much - I recently bought a denim dress without trying it on (had I tried it on in store I wouldn't have bought it as it rides up. In short, it doesn't fit nicely - but I can certainly do this with it) 😀
That vest is a remarkable example of what you can do with just a few pieces of recycled scraps! Wow, you’ve such an eye for color & a heart for creative fun clothes… so glad to find you Traci ❤❤❤ this channel😊. Thanks for sharing😊
IKR? I love the black and pink outfit she's wearing, very elegant yet comfortable, classy and expensive-looking. I want to make a similar vest, but sadly I'll have to skip the fringe because I have three cats, and they are all crazy! They'd be swinging on that vest and climbing me like a tree! It's bad enough just trying to cut out pattern pieces with my frisky felines. They love to be involved.
Thank you for the advice about making to sell...getting out of your head. Don't be average. That's brillant! You do things I'd never think of doing and it turns out so great. You really are an artist and your ability to think out of the box and do the unexpected just makes me realize there are no rules in artistry. This piece is SO cute!
This is so much fun! I love how you blend so many different colors together in one outfit. I really struggle with that! I tend to be too matchy matchy! I love that you are encouraging folks to create and not think about what is popular or what others might like because whatever you do will appeal to someone! At one point, my husband said why are you not making stuff that people want to buy and it really made me feel so sad but bottom line is I do sell fairly well and I am pretty new at this so I’m not giving up my creativity
My mom would say something like that to me. She focused on how I would make money with my creations, writing, artwork, pottery, etc. It stunted my artistic growth for decades. Worrying about what will sell zaps my creativity. I love that she gives us "permission" so to speak, to just create and not worry about if it's going to sell. ❤ Now at 58, I'm just starting selling on Etsy. The competition is fierce, and people say Etsy is saturated. But I'm just going to create, and use my talent, and have fun. Thank you so much Traci for your videos❤
Whaaaaa? I've been creatively blocked for a couple weeks so I made an upcycled vest just last night. Today you upload an inspirational video with finishing and styling ideas. I feel so lucky!
Traci! It’s absolutely beautiful! Thank you for always giving all of us great ideas and making beautiful and fun pieces! You’re such an inspiration to many!
Too bad I don't still live in Texas, I have a ridiculous amount of fabric, trims, buttons, lace... I've been sewing my clothes since age 12, 51 years ago, and I'd love to share it with other creative folks. I live way out in the middle of nowhere though. My nearest neighbor is 2 miles away. Your dog is beautiful! Reminds me of "Mike" the border collie from the movie "Down and Out in Beverly Hills". I also have a border collie! Aren't they the best doggies EVER? So smart and so sweet. His first owner had to rehome him after he bit their neighbor and the neighbor told them to get rid of him by the end of the day or he would "get rid of him" violently. What a creep! Joey bit him because he trespassed into Joey's yard and drunkenly yelled profanity at Joey's "littermates"; the two small children in his family that he guarded with his life. I got there as fast as I could, and showed Joey's owner pics of my 20 acre goat ranch in the mountains, where he will run free, no fences, and a herd of goats who need protecting. This place is like Disneyland for dogs! Joey has lived with me 13 years now, he still spry and a very happy dog. I stayed in touch with his former owner and she's happy that he's living his best life and has a job he does well. Those little children he protected 13 years ago are in high school now!
Oh my LOVE 🥰 THIS SO MUCH! Crazy thing, I just worked with those same butterflies 🦋( big & small) as additions along w/other goodies on a jacket and a pair of bell bottom jean this week!! 👉YOU are the absolute BEST ❤INSPIRATION in this space!!!
Another amazing creative project!! 😍 I’m still working on the hand stitching one from last week and am having so much fun but whew it’s a long process for sure. lol I can’t wait to try this one too!! I have a couple of vests and I just thrifted a pink leather jacket I hope to use for one of your bag tutorials and might have to try a few strands for this project. Thanks always for your creative inspiration and lessons!! I look so forward to your Sunday videos! I wish every day was a new Traci video but I understand they definitely take time and energy so I won’t be greedy. lol Much love to you and thank you so much!! 😊 🥰
I want to mention a BOLO when at thrift stores and yard sales, if you find clothing made from Ultrasuede™and it's cheap, get it! I used to work for a high-end designer/tailor circa 1980 who specialized in making "sculpted" women's "power suits". Most ladies' suits at the time were too masculine and boxy, so Ms. Dilling's designs were all about feminine curves while looking like a confident woman in power! We took inspiration from shows like "Dynasty" and "Falcon Crest", because all the rich ladies in Dallas then wanted to look like Joan Collins, or Sue Ellen Ewing from "Dallas". The suits were usually either made of a heavy silk or Ultrasuede, and I remember that Ultrasuede was very expensive then, about $50 per yard! Great stuff though. Feels and looks like suede, but is washable and very easy to spot clean. It's easy to work with and I especially love making stuffed animals with it.
Will this be washable by hand? Your colour choices are Supreme and I totally melted with the composition in a most favorable manner! ❤❤❤ Will wearing this with one of your headbands be too much?
I'd wear a headband with it😍 handwash would prob be best, but I'm too lazy lol. I'd wash this in the machine, cold water, delicate cycle, line dry.😍❤❤❤
Your vest is so cute on you. It is very interesting. Great job. My son demanded a leather jacket while he was in High School. When it got dirty, I took it to our only Dry Cleaner (who sent it to a cleaner in another area of the country). The dry cleaning cost almost as much as the leather jacket cost when it was new. However, it did not look clean at all when it came back. My son didn't want it anymore (because it looked dirty). After the dry cleaning it started to grow mold. I gave the jacket to a woman who made things out of old leather. She managed to save enough of the leather to cover an old Bible. I wonder what would have happened if I had just put that leather jacket in the washer and washed it like it was cloth? My son's leather jacket was almost a total loss from the professional cleaning. I have never bought any leather skirts, jackets, coats, or vests (new or used) after the bad outcome of that leather jacket.
Dear Traci, once again, your colour sense is superb. I could watch just to see you co ordinate hues. Loved this one. I just got an emerald green faux suede biker jacket at the thrift store. “ what are you going to do with THAT?” Said my husband… oh, I’m just going to Myers it…..❤❤❤ Also, do you listen to audio books or podcasts as you create? Obviously not when making your lovely videos, but normally?
14:18 I found a trick for water spots! Use an emery board (nail file) the cardboard kind. File it gently and it takes it away quite easily. Works on uggs as well!
@ my daughter got brand new Ugg slippers and ran outside the other night and the rain came out of no where. We found the solution on tik tok and tried it and thank god it worked.
Love this!! I made a white ruffled long tailed blouse with lots!!! of doilies on it. My question is since I don’t wear much white could I dye it with Rit Denim Dye? I have only worn it 1 time and think I would wear it more if I dyed it. Love love love your vids.
Sure, as long as the fabrics are natural. Otherwise, use Rit Dyemore for synthetics (you probably knew that). I just ordered denim blue, but I couldn't find that color in Dyemore.🤗💕💕💕💕
I'm wanting sell my creations. In your opinion, should i concentrate on a signature item such as purses in the begining? I love your creations and really any advice you have i would be so thankful for.
That's a tough one. I'm all over the board with my creations. Personally, I am a lot more fulfilled when I don't limit myself. Purses are more time consuming and really have to sell pretty high to make it worth your while. If I were to focus on one thing it would probably be jeans.🤗💖💖💖💖
You rock the upcycle world!
I predict that we will start to see upcycled clothes with butterflies on Etsy. 😊
🥰😘❤❤❤❤❤
@LazyIRanch such a wonderful score!!!🤗💓💓💓💓

J'aime beaucoup !!!! (Comme toujours !) Gros bisous de France. Ysa

Another amazing creative project!! 😍
I’m still working on the hand stitching one from last week and am having so much fun but whew it’s a long process for sure. lol
I can’t wait to try this one too!!
I have a couple of vests and I just thrifted a pink leather jacket I hope to use for one of your bag tutorials and might have to try a few strands for this project. Thanks always for your creative inspiration and lessons!!
I look so forward to your Sunday videos!
I wish every day was a new Traci video but I understand they definitely take time and energy so I won’t be greedy. lol
Much love to you and thank you so much!! 😊 🥰
Awww thank you and much love back to you🤗😘💕💕💕💕💕
Great vest idea!
Thank you!🤗💕💕💕💕
I want to mention a BOLO when at thrift stores and yard sales, if you find clothing made from Ultrasuede™and it's cheap, get it!
Great tips, thank you!🤗💕💕💕💕💕
Will this be washable by hand? Your colour choices are Supreme and I totally melted with the composition in a most favorable manner! ❤❤❤ Will wearing this with one of your headbands be too much?
I'd wear a headband with it😍 handwash would prob be best, but I'm too lazy lol. I'd wash this in the machine, cold water, delicate cycle, line dry.😍❤❤❤
Maybe use a few of the same elements on the headband as you use on the vest. Not too catchy match but just a hint that they go together.
It's risky, but if it's the last resort, why not. My items usually turn out fine. Sometimes they shrink.🥰
Love it❤
Thank you!🤗💖💖💖
Dear Traci, once again, your colour sense is superb. I could watch just to see you co ordinate hues. Loved this one. I just got an emerald green faux suede biker jacket at the thrift store. “ what are you going to do with THAT?” Said my husband… oh, I’m just going to Myers it…..❤❤❤
Also, do you listen to audio books or podcasts as you create? Obviously not when making your lovely videos, but normally?
Lol thank you so much 🥰 I typically just listen to music, but podcasts are a great idea and I love audiobooks🤗💕💕💕
Bello molto bello❤❤❤👍
Thank you!!🤗💕💕💕💕
❤
14:18 I found a trick for water spots! Use an emery board (nail file) the cardboard kind. File it gently and it takes it away quite easily. Works on uggs as well!
Love the tip! Thank you so much!🥰💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
@ my daughter got brand new Ugg slippers and ran outside the other night and the rain came out of no where. We found the solution on tik tok and tried it and thank god it worked.
Love it!
❤❤❤❤
Вы что не оденете-все вам идет 👍
Thank you so so much 🤗❤❤❤
I love watching your videos. May I ask how much you would have asked for this vest, just so I have an idea of what price range to ask?
Oh, I'm not sure...I haven't sold for few years now.🥰
❤❤❤😊

@@tmyershandmade978 thanks I am going to do and be happy with how ever it turns out.
Thank you so much for taking time to answer my question.😊
My pleasure 🤗💕💕
We're you ever a biker chic?
Never was😍💕💕💕💕
