  • Lighting an Optimus 111T, this stove came with the o-ring pump rod which I replaced with a leather pump cup rod. Not all the air is forced into the tank hence the pump rod sticking out a bit which can be lowered by just spinning it until the air between the pump cup comes out.

I've got an old Optimus 8R which I bought 40 years ago. It didn't come with a pump, and it's as loud as little rocket, but I love its design and durability. My kit is totally self-contained - I included an eyedropper & small flint in the case so I can prime it with fuel from the tank and light it with the flint. Still works great!

These were routinely used for base camp stoves in the Himalayas and other high expeditions. I have a model 8r, great unit, which I've had since 1973. Still roars good as new. Indestructible.

best thing about the 111t is the silent burner, which is much quieter than the roarer burners on the 111, 111b and 22b.

This little guy is a lot quieter than the earlier ones with the flame spreader plate!

One thing when pumping....take out the adjustemt lever to the primus. (the one you are using when adjusting the fire). This to avoid breaking the lead seal inside the primus. I have been using this kind of primus for almost 30 years now, and I have learnt it the hard way, when the primus stop working in temperatures below - 30 degrees celsius.

This is very good advice. The 111 is a timeless classic of a stove.

Sorry for the late reply. The dispenser could be found on ebay under sewing machine oiler and comes with either the plastic or metal spout. Hope this helps.

First: OIL THE PUMP & SHAFT. Or use silicone grease.
Second: Pump it up before adding the alcohol and it won't get spilt.

May I ask where you got your "METAL" Tipped alcohol priming squeeze bottle? been looking for one just like it as I keep melting the tip on my plastic squeeze bottle ones. The long metal tips are great for getting in between the narrow windscreens such as the 123R and other stoves without melting the tip.

@tjhowelliii yes, they are good stoves for car camping. I like the heat output so much. I also have a 111 which runs on kerosene and is a delight to use.

Great demo. Thanks for the tip about how to collapse the pump rod. Mine does the same thing and I was I was having to push it in while holding it to get the case closed. Spinning the pump knob works great for releasing the pressure and allowing the pump rod to go down all the way. I wonder is the tank is different between 111's with the two style pump rods?

Sorry for the late response. The sparker is made by Imco (Austria) for Coghlans (Canada). Pops up on Ebay once in a while. Cheers

Did the 'O' ring pump seal ever work properly when it was new?
Mine was a pain in the ass & I used to swop the pump rod assembly between a Optimus 00 and the 111T before I got another complete pump rod assembly.
Mine was originally green, but was overpainted in black before I got it.
I have never used methylated spirit in the stove, but I have the jet & restrictor for the fuel. I have used paraffin or white gas & I will investigate the sewing machine oil bottles.
I have a roarer 111 too. This is the version for paraffin, but will burn white gas.

I sold the 111T on to another collector.
I wonder if the 111T owner was supposed to use grease around the 'O' ring pump seal.
The original roarer 111 meant for paraffin is brilliant on white gas. It only needs a few pumps, enough to let some gas into the pre-heat bowl.
You don't need much, because the burner has four pre-heat tubes.
As the valve has a positive shut-off you can allow the stove to cool before releasing the tank pressure.
