Recently, I used your method to ship two pieces and I’ll never use another way! Such a professional, protected package! Thanks so very much for all the advice you so kindly share!
This is so very, very nice of you to give us such clear instructions on how to do this. You make it look so easy. And I was really glad to hear you buy your foam core at the dollar tree! I just bought a sheet there the other day, and then I thought this probably isn't as good quality. But you use it and it works! That's awesome.
Thanks Karen,, very clear and concise tutorial. This would also be a great method for shipping unmounted watercolor painting and prints, too (I'm new to using solely pastels in my mixed media artwork). :)
Love all your videos. You explain everything so well, and this one was very helpful too… but, I have a question Karen. How would you display unframed soft pastel paintings when doing an Art Show so people could view your work before purchase? Would you still make the foam board sandwich with the painting taped/hinged down and then the glassine hinged in let’s say one side so it could be lifted up to see the painting? Thanks 😊
I am so sorry for the delay in response. I missed seeing your question. I actually use a piece of foam core and a 'clear bag' archival plastic sleeve. Here is a link to one of my blog articles with information:kemstudios.blogspot.com/2016/12/how-to-display-pastel-paintings-without.html
@@KarenMargulis It’s perfectly ok, and thank you so much for the information and answer to my question. I will certainly give this a try. Grateful for your knowledge and expertise in all your videos. You’re my favourite Pastelist. Thanks again Karen 💛
Thank you for sharing your method, this is very helpful! Do you think the foamcore sandwich in a bubble envelope would work, or is it not rigid enough without the exterior box?
I have also shipped in the plastic bubble mailers without a problem. I always write Do Not Bend on the outside of the envelope. It is safer to use a box though!
Thank you, Karen,, as always, for the great information. How about the risks of shipping a framed pastel under museum glass? There is always particulate on the glass after the fact. I do not and will not use fixative. It ruins a pastel painting.
Hi Karen. Thanks for a very informative video! I cannot purchase glassine paper in South Africa, is there a replacement I can use? Wishing you all the best for Xmas and New Year!
Thanks for your helpful information! Love your videos and paintings. Can you advise which brand you use as black tape? Or give some more information? Thanks a lot from Belgium
Hi Karen, thank you for your guidance for shipping, could you tell me what thickness of foam core you use for shipping just the artwork and also if shipping a mounted artwork. Many thanks
I get them at www.clearbags.com There are so many sizes! If you go to my blog and do a search for clear bags you will find a post with a list of the sizes I use. www.karenmargulis.com
Thanks for sharing! Do you ever put your paintings behind matte board? If so where do you buy them? And do you have a supplier you can recommend for the clear bags?
Thank you! Question: do you have a video that addresses the size of the margins of the painting? For example: If the painting is meant to be framed as an 9” x 12” ... 1 - what is the size of the painting you ship? 2 - I noticed your painting does not have a margin. Do you paint an extra 1/4” on the sides?
I paint to the edges of standard size paper such as 8x10 and 9x12. I don't leave margins but I never put anything important near the edges of a painting.
Hey hey I am thinking about opening up for commissions. And one of the biggest issues I had in the thought process: How the hell am I supposed to get my art safely to my customer. Without having to worry. So this video war very very calming for me and informative. And therefore I want to thank you so so much. I am struggeling with anxiety and it means a lot if someone can calm me down like that. I feel prepared now.)
Karen, I have to ship a pastel painting, using your method. Does the pressure on the glasine paper over 7 days in the mail ever cause damage to the painting?
I have never had a problem with this method. The glassine paper needs to be taped securely over the painting and the foamcore boards need to be taped together to prevent the glassine from shifting. The pressure doesnt cause a problem but loose paper can!
@@KarenMargulisDid you ever rewrite your instruction care sheet and would I find it on your blog or Patreon? That is so genius. I’ve had more than one customer inquire about care.
JCmercy4me thanks for watching. I get my business cards through www.moo.com. If you use my link you can get 25% off your first order. refer.moo.com/s/karenmargulis7
Another great box I use to ship art is a record album box. 12x12" and 1" deep. Able to tape the art packet right to the inside of the box! And ship first class rates.
Karen, have you ever shipped anywhere that your painting goes through customs. If so how is the best way to handle it. Have you ever had any problems shipping out of the country.
For international I ship and package unframed paintings protected by foam core in a bubble envelope. I have had paintings hung up in customs so they take longer to be delivered but never had one lost.
Aw, I love the kitty at the end!!! 🥰 Great explanatory video…
I love your kitty meowing in the background lol!!
Very helpful! thanks, just sold my first painting to someone not local and had to ship it. Feeling much more confident that it will arrive safely.
Thanks for sharing your method for protecting and mailing art . Seems easy enough !

Hi Karen, I just discovered this wonderful, helpful video. Have you done, and would you recommend the same process on 12x16, 16x20 pieces?
Thanks!

Thank you for this video Miss Karen, very very helpful. What side of the glassine paper do you use, matte or glossy side? Thank you, Paige
Thanks for watching. I use either side.

Really helpful, thanks!

Thank you very much! Very agile movements!
Very helpful thank you. I was wondering, do you ever spray your paintings to protect them? Sheila
Thank you! No I don't ever give my painting a final spray as I find the sanded papers hold onto the pastel very well.

Hello, thank you for the lovely information. Please tell me if you use any fixative for your soft pastels painting. Thsnk you.
Thank you! I don't use a final fixative.
Hello! Thank you for such a detailed video! Could you tell me if you would pack an oil pastel the same way or should it be different?

I know this is a video from 3 years ago 😅 but I’m so curious if you ever use fixative on your pastel paintings
I don't use final fixative. I find the sanded papers hold onto the pastel until I can frame!
Great idea! Can you please tell me the name of the paper that you put over the painting? Thank you
Thanks! I am using glassine paper. You can use tracing paper but glassine is archival.
Thank you. Great information. Can I ask if you spray your finished art work with a fixative? Best wishes from AZ 😊🎄🎁
Thanks for watching! No I never use a final fixative. The sanded paper really holds onto the pastel and makes it unnecessary.
Thank you, Karen,, as always, for the great information. How about the risks of shipping a framed pastel under museum glass? There is always particulate on the glass after the fact. I do not and will not use fixative. It ruins a pastel painting.

Thank you! I use black artists tape. I get it online at dickblicks.
Do you use fixative spay in your paintings before shipping them?
I never use a final fixative. I just give the painting a good tap on the back to dislodge any loose pastel dust.
I notice you paint edge to edge with your pastels. What sizes do you typically do that fit in standard size frames?
I typically paint 8x10, 9x12, 11x14 which fit into standard frames.
What care instructions do you send to your customers? I'm looking for the Wright words to send with mine. Can you help please?
Is this method suitable for oil pastels as well? I mean the part with glassine paper. Thanks
I just saw your comment. I have never worked with oil pastels so I am not sure!
Hi Karen! How do you ship mounted work? Thanks!
I do the same process for a mounted painting. The foam ore sandwich is just a bit thicker!
Hi Karen, thank you for your guidance for shipping, could you tell me what thickness of foam core you use for shipping just the artwork and also if shipping a mounted artwork. Many thanks
It is thin maybe 3/8. I get it at the Dollar Tree! I do the same process for mounted work as well as unmounted.
