One of the best Polish movies IMO :) One of a trilogy - "Sir Wolodyjowski", "The Deluge" and "With fire and sword". All 3 are monumental and epic :)

To klasyczny film o miłości z tłem historycznym.

Ogniem i mieczem. 2. Potop, 3, Pan Wołodyjowski. Trudno to opowiedzieć, to trzeba przeczytać, choć wszystkie 3 są sfilmowane,. Polecam.

My translation of this song :
    O my falcon cloudy-eyed,
    Ask about me mountains high,
    Ask about me wisdom forests,
    And set me free
    O my crystal falcon sheer,
    Ask about me nimble streams,
Ask about me flowers of fields
    And set me free,
    My beloved…
How m I to ask heavenly stars ?
They are jealous of your dowery
    Four coffers of love
    And of kindliness of yours,
    My beloved..
How to ask the other ladies ?
They will find my own heart in yours,
Although they know they'd not tell me,
I would not find you there,
    O my falcon thunderer,
    Ask about me fabled steppes,
    Ask these fragrant herbal weeds,
    And set me free,
    Across kurgans burned to ashes,
    Across hamlets all on fires,
    I dont know sleep anymore
    measuring steppes
    to find you,
    My beloved,
How am I to ask the Moon,
He is falling for your orbs,
    He’ll chase off the Sun
    Veiling the steppes,
    I would not find you,
    My beloved…
How am I to ask the Cossak?
Who went down with sickly love,
He would scorch the world from grief,
    If he lost you,
    Me…
    If I lost you…
How am I to ask the Moon,
He is falling for your orbs,
    He’ll chase off the Sun
    Veiling the steppes,
You would not find me, no!
We, the staring, we the listening,
    So presently to the limits,
    In the darkness of Cinema
    Wipe away our tears,
    secretly.
    :)

The actors are not the singers, but both the actors and the singers are top notch. I met the male singer, Mietek Szcześniak, as he came to my High School to perform a concert. Our school's priest invited him. And I also met one of the actors, the handsome dark one in this clip, called Bohun in the movie, his real name Aleksandr Domogarov, he is Russian but for a while was living in Poland. My aunt used to work in a theatre where he worked, he was very nice and friendly, everybody liked him and thought he was hot.

This is a movie, but it is not about the love of a Polish nobleman for a Russian princess. This film concerns the rebellion and the terrible civil war of 1648. As a result, 150 years after this civil war, the great democratic state of the Republic of Poland collapsed. Cossacks (today's Ukrainians) then sold themselves to Muslims, Russians and Germans. Poland offered them the Union.

Ogniem i mieczem - With Fire and Sword is a 1999 Polish historical drama film directed by Jerzy Hoffman. The film is based on the novel With Fire and Sword, the first part in The Trilogy of Henryk Sienkiewicz. At the time of its filming it was the most expensive Polish film ever made.
The story is set in Ukrainian lands of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland during the Khmelnytsky Uprising of the mid-17th century. A Polish noble, Skrzetuski, and a Cossack otaman Bohun, both fall in love with the same woman, Helena. Their rivalry unfolds against the backdrop of a Cossack uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, aimed at reclaiming control of the land from the hands of the Polish nobles. Historic events form a framework for an action and character driven plot, and fictional characters mingle with historic ones. The movie, as the book, culminates with the savage siege of Zbarazh.
    My cloud -eyed falcon
Ask the High Mountains about me
Ask me wise forests about me
    And free me
    My falcon, my transparent
Ask the curious trends about me
Ask the field flowers about me
And free me, my nice ...
How do I ask stars in the heavens?
They are jealous of your dowry:
    Four chests about love
    And about your goodness
    My dear...
How do I ask other women?
He will discover my heart in you
And although they know, they will not say
    I won't find you
    My thunderous falcon
    Ask famous steppes about me
    Ask these fragrant storms
    And free me
    Through the burial mounds
    By chutory on the fire
I don't know sleep anymore, I measure the steppe
    To find you
    My dear...
How do I ask the moon?
He loves himself in your pupils
The sun will kill, Step will cover
    I won't find you
    My dear...
    How do I ask Kozak?
What a sick love has fallen in
He would set fire to the world with regret
    If he lost you ...
    Me...
How do I ask the moon?
He loves himself in your pupils
The sun will kill, Step will cover
    You won't find me
    We staring, sweetened
So contemporary up to the limits
    In a dark cinema, secret

A corrected translation of the lyrics:
    Oh, my cloudy-eyed Falcon
Ask the tall mountains about me
    Ask the wise forests
    And set me free
Oh, my Falcon, my clear one
Ask the swift currents about me
    Ask the wild flowers
    And set me free
How could I ask the stars, high in the heavens
They are envious of your dowry
Of four chests, full of love
    As well as your kindness
    (My love...)
How could I ask other women?
(They will see my heart in you)
Though they know, they still won't tell me
I won't be able to find you...
Oh, my Falcon, ruling over thunders
Ask the famous steppes about me
    Ask the fragrant thickets
    And set me free
    Through the ashen barrows,
Through the hamlets, all in flames,
I know not sleep any more,
    Crossing the steppe
    To find you...
How could I ask the Moon
He's in love with your pupils
    He'll chase down the sun,
    Cover up the steppes
I won't be able to find you...
    (My love...)
How could I ask the Cossack
Who fell sickly in love with you
He would readily burn down the world from grief
    If he ever lost you...
    (My love...)
    Gazing, listening intently
    So modern to a fault
    In a dark cinema, secretly
We are wiping a single tear.

Unfortunately, not everything can be translated from English into Polish word for word. The translation goes something like this:
    Edyta:
    My cloud-eyed falcon
Ask the high mountains about me
Ask the wise forests about me
    And set me free
    My falcon, my lucid one
Ask the rushing streams about me
    Ask the wildflowers about me
    And set me free
    My beloved...
    Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the stars in the skies?
They are envious of your dowry:
Of your four chests of love
    And of your kindness
    Edyta:
    My beloved...
    Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the other women?
    Edyta:
They shall find my heart within you
    Together:
And although they know, they won't tell
    I won't find you
    Edyta:
    My thundering falcon
Ask the famous steppes about me
    Ask those fragrant bents
    And set me free
    Mieczysław:
    Through the ashen barrows
Through the khutors all in flames
I know no sleep anymore, measuring off the steppe
    To find you
    Edyta:
    My beloved...
    Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the moon?
He is in love with your eyes
He will drive the sun away and cover up the steppe
    I won't find you
    Edyta:
    My beloved...
    Mieczysław:
How am I supposed to ask the Cossack?
    Edyta:
Who has fallen sickly in love
    Together:
In his grief he would set the whole world on fire
    If he lost...
    Mieczysław:
    You
    Edyta:
    Me
    Mieczysław:
    If he lost you
    Edyta:
How am I supposed to ask the moon?
    Mieczysław:
He's in love with your eyes
    Together:
He'll drive the sun away and cover up the steppe
    You won't find me
    With fixed eyes, engrossed in
So modern up to the limit
    In a dark theater, secretly
    We wipe away our tears
