Managing Expectations As a Doc Student

As you go through the dissertation process, you have to be mindful of the responsibilities you take on.
NO has to be part of your vocabulary.
If there are opportunities that arise that you can’t take on, be upfront.
Let people know that you are writing your dissertation and at the time, you can’t add any more to your plate but when you’re done you can circle back.
They should understand. And if they don’t, that’s ok too.
Remember, your goal is to finish your dissertation which will help you propel your career: publication opportunities, work promotions, etc.
It’s time to be selfish with your time and the things you commit to while going through your dissertation process.
It can feel hard to say no and you may feel bad.
But the world won’t stop.
Any barriers that stand in the way have to be moved so you can stay focused on completing your goal.
